She smiled. “Training for legal matters is such a… dry process. People attend specific schools and get taught by others except instead of a single master, teaching a few apprentices at a time, it is a much larger ratio of teachers to students until you get into specific branches of the Law. There is much that can be said for teaching on a more one to one ratio but art is a much different beast than Law. Much of what you do is by touch, feel, emotion. Much of what I do is finding boundaries and trying to rehabilitate others through what programs are available at the time.”

Halai considered Astrid for a moment. “I don’t believe that is strictly true,” she said softly. “I think if you look deep enough, that amongst all the rules and limits, you are still a person who has to consider the person before them and figure out the best way forward. You can choose to be strictly analytical about it and disregard the emotional weight of a sentence on the person or those affected, but I don’t think that that is you.”

“You were lucky to have such a wonderful mother who made sure you had the benefit of a master. I find I envy you that.”

Astrid ROusseau.

She smiled and nodded. “Yes, yes I was. I miss her a great deal some days, but I feel her through my carving. And it’s another reason why I feel compelled to teach someone this art form at some point. Not just to preserve the art form and tradition itself, but also to honour her memory.” reaching out, Halai touched the large hunk of nuumite and patted it softly before moving out of the room.

Opening the next door on the left, Halai just stepped back so Astrid so peer inside. “Nothing crazy, just a workout space that I can shift into a guest room if needed.” There were mats on the floor, with a stand of weights and a couple custom bō that were sized somewhere between a typical bō at 1.8 metres long and a jō at 1.2 metres long. On the ceiling hung a kick bag that was on a pulley that meant she could store it in a corner but brig it out where it was more useable in the middle of the room.
