The sleep took him for hours, deep and undreaming as his body recovered and his mind reset to where it needed to be. Sometime the next morning, light again split the darkness as he awoke, in the same bed but no longer with the fog of injury, medication or stress to cover him and lead him back to sleep again. He awakened knowing he was in hospital this time remembering the woman, or thinking he did, not sure if he had been dreaming or not. His first urge, reaction really, was to sit up, but in his mind he knew what his injuries had been and he did not know how well they had been healed, or if they had at all.

He lay in bed for a few moments, mentally checking himself until he was satisfied he had everything he was supposed to, and then pushed himself up on his elbows slightly, testing his body and looking to see where exactly he was, his eyes searching the room, but his body revealing fatigue and stiffness he expected was due to his healed inuries, after all it was now obvious his bones were no longer broken, but the muscles around them were still weak without use and would take time to heal themselves from the damage, even with modern medicine. Quietly, he was pleased he was in such good shape, it would give his body the best chance of a fast recovery and was probably what had kept him alive in the wastes in the first place.

The night had passed quickly for Linarra after that. The fact Mr. Wolf had regained consciousness for even a little while made his odds of making it significantly higher. She had fallen asleep writing up her report about the surgery and a kind but stern nurse had woken her and guided her to the barracks created for tired nurses and doctors who needed to crash after a long shift. She laid down on one of the beds and went back to sleep in seconds.
It wasn’t her nature to sleep past six in the morning so she woke up and showered, put on fresh clothes and brushed her hair and pulled it back in a braid. In her mind she kept hearing the Wolf’s thoughts about her eyes. Linarra know it was stupid but she had never really thought of her eyes as attractive. She took a deep breath and shook her head trying to center herself before she started the day. When she exited the barracks she went to check on their ship crash patient. Linarra walked to his room as she looked at the padd with his chart before looking at him.
“Good Morning Mr. Wolf. I’m doctor Riccio. I’m glad to see you’ve been recovering rather well,” she said professionally.

As the door opened Atticus shifted his gaze to the person entering, recognizing the woman he had seen the night before, the one with the deep eyes with flecks of gold like so many stars in the expanse.

This time it was automatic, the knowledge she was a telepath set his mind into work automatically, long practiced years of guarding his thoughts and feelings now second nature, and Atticus knew that the night before he had weak, vulnerable, but too confused and delirious to have a coherent thought. The walls around his mind came up, like a Citadel who’s defenses had never been breached. Of course a powerful telepath, or even a determined one, would have no trouble beating down his walls, but to do that it would have to be deliberate and Atticus knew most telepaths respected the mind of others. Most.

That she knew his name came as no surprise, he had never hidden himself and his medical files, what he allowed to be seen by the Federation anyhow, were available. “Believe me nobody is happier at the recovery than myself” he replied, easily and calmly. He looked around again for a moment before his eyes settled on her. “I am in hospital on OED correct? Sacred Heart? Your search and rescue teams must have been at the crash site fast” he smiled slightly, the expression only barely reaching his eyes, “I didn’t have long by the time I lost consciousness.”

Someone who could shield so well made Linarra think two things, Mr. Wolf was a man with secrets, and he was well trained. There were fellow Betazoids who couldn’t shield the way he could. It was impressive and a little alarming. Linarra smiled as she came closer to her patient’s bed.
“You’re correct, quite a interesting welcome to Sacred Heart and to Oed,” Linarra replied and giving him a small nodd of the head before continuing.
“Your ship put on quite an impressive display on it’s way down and we were able to pinpoint its location accurately. It also helps Sacred Heart has been strategically placed for best possible response times, luck for you. After we found you it took eight hours of surgery and bone setting to put you back together, but it wasn’t anything I couldn’t handle,” Linarra said with a small little smirk of pride for her team and her own skills.
“Is there anyone we should contact for you, an employer or family to let them know you’re alright? Your file was quite vague in a few areas,” Linarra asked as she wrote down his current vitals into her notes.

“Nobody” Atticus said, “I have few commitments and nothing pressing, judging by the time and date” he indicated the clock on the wall, “I still have a couple of days before my meetings with the Property agents here on OED are due. I’m sure with your tender care and expert skills Doctor, I will be up and about and on my own again in no time.”

Atticus pushed himself to a seated position and covered himself from the waist down with the blankets to preserve his modesty from the light hospital garments, then looked at Linarra again with a wide and genuine smile. “Thank you, Doctor Riccio. I guess without you I would have a little trouble getting to those meetings, it looks like I am in your debt. Where abouts are my things? I know my belongings on the ship were destroyed, that explosion was something else.”

Atticus Wolf

Linarra nodded her head at the man’s wording about the explosion that nearly killed him. Her jaw as set tight at the thought, she didn’t like the idea of ships being attacked at their borders.
“Impressive explosion indeed, I think there will be an investigation as to the cause,” Linarra said because she was curious about how that ship had gown down. Linarra relaxed a bit and grinded wide appreciatively when the Mr. Wolf thanked her, and the ease he was taking the fact he had nearly died. She wondered if it would hit him later that if they had found him a second later he wouldn’t be speaking with her right now.
“You’re welcome, it’s my job after all. You will make those meetings don’t worry, from the look at your test results you could be released tomorrow after checking the strength of the leg and arms that were broken,” Linarra replied doing her best not to get flustered, patients thanked their doctors all the time. This was no different despite the fact the man wasn’t unattractive. It was a bit endearing how he tried to keep himself covered as they spoke, a modest man in that regard anyway she thought. Linarra stood by his bed and looked his green eyes to avoid gawking at the muscles in his arms.
“Your things have been brought from the cargo bay to our storage area. Once we know where you’re going to be staying we’ll have them shipped there. Is there anything you need from your things immediately?”

Linarra Riccio-Head of Medical and Social Services

“Not right at this moment” Atticus told her, and he held her gaze for a moment, his smile slight, the hint of mischief about his eyes, then it was gone as he looked down to his arms as he held his hands and forearms out for a mock inspection. “I believe I am in good hands right here, but how about it Doc? Do you think these broken limbs have recovered enough to support a raktajino? Is there anything on that PaDD about denying a man with a second chance a coffee?”

He had no doubt whatsoever that the attack on his transport hadn’t been a random encounter, not with Starfleet so close. All logic would tell him that they were after the smugglers, nobody even knew that Atticus was on that ship, he was careful, but Atticus had learned a long time ago that logic was often faulty without all the information. He couldn’t shake the feeling that it was him they were after, and he had survived enough attacks and dangerous situations to know to trust his instincts implicitly. Right now, he knew that this woman was the head of Medical at OED, so he was in prestigious company indeed to have personal attention from someone with such an important profile. In his line of work, it payed to know who was who in the local government structure and with Linarra, he had struck a bit of luck already. “I’ll be almost sorry to leave” he said to her, looking up from his arms and smiling again, “it’s been a while since I’ve had the opportunity to lie around in bed for a day or so.”
