She sat down on the couch opposite the outdoor fireplace and sighed softly, relaxing easily. She turned to face him, propping her arm on the back of the low backed couch. With Halai gone, people I call friends here are few and far between. I am afraid I have not had time to do much in the way of socializing. My choices were limited to less than a handful and I have not seen you since that night. I thanked you much that evening so I could not possibly pretend that was why I invited you over. To be honest, I invited you over because I wanted to get to know you and I felt you would be open to that.”

Dawson gave a dimpled grin before replying in kind. “You are correct. Some intuition you have there,” he said as he gingerly tapped head.

She grinned in return and nodded. “Thought as much.”

“How’ve you settled in on Oed? I know its been some time since our first encounter and you were still pretty fresh here. Anything changed?” He allowed his arm to rest on the back of the seat as he kept his eyes trained on her, maintaining at least some form of dignity and not being obvious when taking in her entire form.

She shrugged, the gesture looking rather small and elegant. “I think I have settled in well enough. I was just starting to make friends with Halai. I am sad that opportunity is gone, but I’ll get friends eventually. I’ve found some excellent food places and shopping areas I like. The house has become more comfortable than it was, especially after that night. I am getting used to having a full time security detail, though that is still a little unsettling. I wonder… does anyone ever get used to that?”

Astrid.

“I suspect one does eventually,” Dawson said thoughtfully. “I’ve never had to worry much.” He put a finger to his head, indicating his brain. “Security and all things combat oriented has been my specialty for a long time. That’s why I own a company that trains and equips people in that field. If it would help, you could require them to take extra training with my people.” A part of him sincerely hoped to here one of her security guards scoff, but he hoped they were more subtle than that. Either way, he was willing to help.

If the security staff were paying attention to her interactions that closely, it didn’t show. Astrid appreciated the offer though she thought it was unlikely that the security personnel she had on staff would need much more in the way of training. Longstreet had been very picky about the staff he had chosen for this assignment. “I will ask them if they wish to do any specialized training with your company.” By offering them the option and not dismissing their expertise, she might get them to do some more training. However, she wasn’t going to push it.

“Friends, you’ll make in time. This place tends to see people come and go. Though I will admit, Halai was not one of those types. It is sad to see her go, I must admit, but some things are simply necessary.” He shrugged. “Do you think you’ll be here awhile? Or was this more or a temporary assignment?” he asked.

Astrid smiled. “As a matter of fact, I took this job with the intentional purpose to make it a long term one. A lot of my jobs before were merely something to make money while I studied and learned more and gained prominence in my field. This,” She turned to look at the last vestiges of sunset on the horizon. The view from her roofed terrace was naturally stunning. She had chosen a beautiful home. Astrid sighed happily. “is definitely my home for a good long while. And as long as I do my job well, I can keep it. Its not like with Star Fleet, where you can be assigned at a moments notice to something else regardless of your performance.”

Astrid.

Dawson looked on to the sunset, appreciative of the unique beauty in it. “And that’s certainly a good thing. Sometimes it’s nice to just be somewhere for awhile. Soak in what you can. Oed is a far off world in the Federation, but there is beauty here not found anywhere else. And every now and then, someone will show up and add to it.” Whether that was a reference to her or just a general observation would likely be a mystery for the time, however one could make their own assumptions.

She smiled, taking it as a compliment even if he didn’t mean it to be. “I am actually really enjoying the idea of settling down and making a home here. I like the feel of the city and its inhabitants in spite of my break in.”

“I’m glad you chose to be here. The department of justice here will likely take on some solid changes with you.”

“I like to think so.” She said and smiled. Working as the Head of the Judiciary had become a passion project for her. Once she had waded into the mire of the local system and sat there in the mess for a bit, she could start to see how best to improve it. The process had taken up a lot of the time since she had come to OED V. She was only now starting to see life outside her work as beneficial. “I have written several papers on how to adjust and change a system like this during my first years out of school. It will be good to put those theories into practice on a wider scale.”

Dawson allowed himself a grin. “You’ll enjoy that I’m sure.”

“How did you get into security?” she asked as she relaxed against the arm of the couch.

Dawson turned to face her before replying, his eyes intent on her, holding firmly to their conversation. “I was always drawn to it. Most of life can be a struggle. How we deal with the obstacles before us helps make us who we are. I like to know at least a little bit of how to handle a situation before jumping in. And if I can help someone else along the way, then all the better. Security just made sense to me, really. Do you know any personal self-defense, by chance?” Dawson sported a slight smile he asked her. A woman in her position ought to have some form of self-defense. Would she really want him barging into her house to save her? He likely wouldn’t complain if she did though.
