Getting back to work was a pleasant experience. Mostly. Morra was swamped with meetings upon meetings with all her sub-heads of department. But there was one meeting she was not sure whether to dread or anticipate. The new Head of Mining was scheduled for a meeting in the next ten or so minutes.

Morra strode through the Mining offices, her posture straight and confident and barely letting anyone question her presence as she made her way over to the Mining Head office and rapped on the door, expecting an answer.

“Yeah, come in,” a voice called out.

The Mining Operations office was clean, but in a slight disarray. There was a small packing crate in the corner along the wall the door was set it. It was empty and packing materials were scattered around its base. A fiery redhead was putting a picture on the wall of a group of miners around a large geode of magnificent colors. The geode was big enough to have fit two of those in the photo. There was no mistaking which of the faces in the pic belonged to the new Head of Mining. Even in a shot that looked a few years old, the hair and eyes were unmistakable.

Brianna turned to see who had entered. “Oh, hi… you must be Morra? I’m Brianna. Make yourself comfortable and grab a drink from the replicator or small cooler if you want. The small fridge, if she looked had juice, beer and a bottle of blue liquid. The rest of the room was scattered with small boxes of various types, several rocks of assorted colors, some with even more interesting features showing on their interiors and small glass figurines of animals, people and other topics. The glass figures all seemed to be paired with the stones as if on purpose.

“Grab me a beer, will you? I think we can officially call it a day and make this a social call.” She stepped back from the hung picture and smiled. “Perfect....” At which point, Briana turned to finally look at her guest.

Brianna “Bree” O’Harra
Head of Mining

Morra did not grab a beer for O’Harra. Nor did she grab a drink for herself. She stood, watching the human woman work at her decorating with a stern expression on her face. Morra herself made a distinct impression just by her visual appearance. She had a similar facial structure to the Gorn, although her head was notably more streamlined and elegant. Her crimson scales faded into pink on her nose and hands, standing out against the pale grey of her outfit. A long tail draped down and the end twisted slightly around her ankle, also the same striking crimson and pink colours. She waited until she had the woman’s attention, then tilted her head slightly. “I am not here for a social call, Miss O’Harra. This is a call of duty.”

Her amber eyes glanced around the room, taking in all the details, while also glancing back at O’Harra periodically.

“Pity,” the woman said and moved to get herself a juice. No point in insulting the woman before her. “Well, Morra… come have a seat. Duty or not, we deserve to be comfortable. And I am guessing those desk chairs don’t compliment your appendages very well.” She moved to one of two chairs facing a short loveseat style couch. A low table of glass and brass sat between. “So… what brings you to my half reckless office?” She leaned back and watched Morra move about as she sipped her juice.

“I intend to determine what kind of a person you are. And to establish my own authority within the district we both direct,” Morra explained. She saw the seats and after a moment of consideration, took the other chair and dragged it so that it was facing the chair O’Harra was sitting on. And about two meters away. She sat down in said chair and stared unblinklingly at the Mining Head. Until her tongue flicked up and moistened her eyeball, of course.

She didn’t hide the surprise as the lick happened. “Cool ability,” she murmured and had a sip of her drink. Looking at the woman, she frowned slightly. “So you want to have a big boys pissing contest to see who runs the hallways around here? Well how about we skip that and keep it simple. You run your department, I run mine and we don’t tell each other how to do our jobs?” She smiled and nodded. “See, that wasn’t so hard, was it?” She grinned watching the near stoic lizard woman across from her and wondered if the sciences made everyone so down right grounded and serious.

“I am glad that is your opinion. Your predecessor had it in his mind that he could meddle in my work, and I wanted to assure you that such behavior would not be tolerated before you could try to do so,” she leaned back slightly, then sighed. “You mentioned a desire to have a social call. If that is so, we can schedule something later in the week for that, perhaps? I am not all business all the time, but I keep that part of me separate from who I am at work.”

Brianna laughed. “I can’t tell a beaker from a beer glass. You stay outta my mines and I’ll be more than happy to leave your labs alone. And as for a social call, I’m available pretty much any time. I’m still settling in. So I’m giving the foremen a bit of rope to see how far they go before hanging themselves.” She smiled and sipped her beer. “Pity you don’t mix professional and personal time. You should try it. Makes your head space a bit less locked off.” She tapped her temple with her free hand. “You can’t find where ‘outside the box’ is if you don’t open the box on occasion.”

She smiled and leaned forward, elbows on her knees. “Try it one time this week. When you find yourself in a puzzling situation with some fungus, or mold or whatever you all work with. Go to your office, close the door if you need the privacy, and relax like you aren’t at work.” She leaned back in her chair once more. “Your mind finds answers when you are seeking them. Remember that.”

After a moment, she nodded back to the woman. “So why else did you come here? Certainly not just to ask me to leave your territory alone. Or was that truly it?”

“I like to get an idea of who my fellow leaders are,” Morra replied. “But yes, it was mostly territorial,” she replied, licking her other eyeball, then giving O’Harra a very unsettling toothy grin. Unsettling partially because each one of her teeth were sharply pointed. “If you ever find anything in the mines that needs studying, feel free to let us in Science and Terraforming know.” She stood up, pushing the chair back into place.

The trick was a neat one. And in the back of her mind, Bree was a bit jealous of the limitations of humans. “I will do that.” She stood up and nodded. “And if you find a rock you can’t identify,” she laughed, “Let me know. It’s been a pleasure. Try that thought process exercise. Lemme know how it works for you. And meantime, hit me up when you are ready to step out of that uniform and get relaxed.” She laughed.

Morra nodded slightly, then stepped out of the office and headed to her next meeting.
