“Yes, I am Astrid. Thank you, I would love some.” She smiled warmly as she sat down, taking the pin out of her hat so she could take it off and placing them together on the seat beside her. She quickly and gracefully poured herself a cup of the offered tea, fixing it with some basic adjustments to cream and sugar. Then she tasted it before adding a bit more of both. “Yes that is quite good.”

Finally she returned her attention to the woman across from her. The justice system dealt with all species and she had seen Morra’s before. Her scales were a beautiful shade and Astrid admired them silently. “We have had some uptick in gang related activity and the Governor is leaving. I have not met his replacement yet. Have you?”

Rousseau, HotJ

Morra’s family, a group of seven individuals, were the only ones of their species on Oed V, but they had gotten around. Her brother, Basa, had been involved in several cases within the justice system as a witness and police consultant, as he was a member of the police force on the colony.

“I have not. I only got back to the dome the day before yesterday,” Morra replied. She blinked slowly, her eyelid coming in from the side, then took another slow sip of the hot tea. Gang activity. That did not sound good. She would have to remind herself to contact her brood-brother and inquire after his health. “Are you aware of the reason for the Governor’s departure?”

Morra, HoST

While yes, she had seen Basa and interacted with him from time to time, she had many years of work before coming to OED V in which she met more species than she could count. This was especially true for her time doing research for her dissertation on “Treaty Law Dynamics Between Multiple Species”.

She sipped her tea and shook her head. “I cannot speak to a specific reason, though I do believe a recent incident prompted the consideration of leaving. His family and the people of OED V were in danger due to the technology that lives inside him. If that is not the main reason, I think it must surely be a big one. Maybe he feels it is best to serve people in another capacity. Or maybe he wants to live his life with less responsibility on him and his family.”

Rousseau, HotJ

Morra scratched the scales around her left nostril for a few moments, then returned her hand to the table and she took another sip of her hot tea. “I look forward to meeting the new Governor. I wonder what kind of a person they will turn out to be?”

“I don’t know but it will sure be interesting. They never do replace these positions with people similar to the ones before do they?”

She should have done some research into the incoming Governor before arriving, but she hadn’t exactly been warned on the change. “And yourself? How have you been settling into your position in the Dome? I do not recall you being here when I first rose to the position of Head of Science and Technology a year ago, but I could be wrong in that.”

Morra, HoST

Astrid herself had done no research yet into the incoming Governor. The outgoing Governor and his family had required a great deal of her time outside the judiciary and so she was behind on looking at his file. The food was placed before the two women. It smelled amazing and Astrid dug into her lunch for a minute before she answered Morras questions. She was a very polite eater, impeccable manners.

“The Judiciary was a bit of a mess when I first arrived. The previous head was not all that great about streamlining processes and red tape. I have worked quite a bit to make everything more efficient overall and I think I have done a very good job thus far. I guess only time will tell and of course, I have more to do. I came on right at or right after you left. I am still very new. What made you come back?”

Rousseau, HotJ

“I think it would be more accurate to ask why I departed. I always intended to return to Oed V after my time on Homeworld was completed. There was a matter regarding Clan honour and leadership that needed to be dealt with, so I had to go to my anscestral home to, well… Deal with it,” Morra’s long tongue flicked out of her mouth and swiped across her left eyeball, moistening it.

While she had met representatives of the species, Astrid was not often around them. Even though she had seen the essential act of moistening the eyeball with the tongue several times, it still was a bit unnerving as she could never imagine doing that to her own eyeball. Thank the gods she had the fortitude not to show her surprise on her face. There were some perks to being a life long judge. All she did was blink a little extra and sip her tea.

“But since that has been dealt with, I was free to return to my job and my sub-clan. I am glad to be back here with my…” She paused, then shrugged slightly. “Your word that best describes it is ‘family’.”

“Ah. You have family here? Either blood or bond?”

Rousseau, HotJ

“By bond, I suppose. Although, in my culture, Blood relations are not as… Important as they are in yours. There are seven of us. My Brood-brother, Basu, is one that I was raised alongside, and is here. His two biological offspring are raised in my home by my Partner, Asu, whose Brood-sister, Hari, is my secretary. The biological mother of the children lives in an apartment with Hari. If we were raised in the same way as humans, I would have no connection to Basu, but because of the way my people rear our children, he is to me what a brother would be to you.”

“How fascinating, and good for the children. There is a saying I love and wish had been applied to me and my siblings as children: It takes a village.” She smiled with a bit of pain behind her eyes. “It means that the more people involved in raising children, the more likely they will be well rounded, healthy adults with good values and a discerning nature. A lot of cultures value that sort of family dynamic.”

Rousseau, HotJ

Morra nodded slightly. “In my culture, it is believed that each person has their own… task or profession that they are best suited to following. Raising Children is one of those tasks… but not one that the biological parents take part in. Here on Oed V it is different, because there are so few of us. I did not meet my Sire and Dam until I had lived ten winters, but Milo and Tama are being raised with theirs close-by. It is, I think, a hybridization of your method of child rearing, and our method.”

Morra realized that what she was saying was not what Astrid was thinking, but hopefully their thoughts were close enough to make sense. “Would you tell me more about your life here? Do you have friends or family on Oed to support you or be supported by you?”

Morra, HoST
