Bree’s momentary angst at not being part of the initial ‘opening’ of the mine was swiftly replaced by a look of impressive acceptance. “Not bad,” she murmured as they stepped in. When K’letn stepped over, she smiled and nodded respectfully. “Lady, I am most impressed. I wish the Federation moved with such speed and precision.” Looking from the choreographed chaos back to the woman. “And no, the drink did not get to me. It was dealing with the formalities of claiming the mine and permissions to open and work it that took up most of my morning. It is good to see you,” she added and nodded once more.

“I hope it wasn’t inappropriate of me, I let B’Ghal ride out with me. Seemed silly to find him another transport when he informed me he was coming this way.”

K’letn waved off the concern and said “Follow me. Lord Duric is not here. He is finalizing some business with the Police Commissioner.” and she led the Head of Mining into the tunnels. As the followed the twists and bends, K’letn said “Tell me what you see.”

Bree followed the woman and smiled at the question. “I see an atmosphere ready environment where we can start getting samples to see if this is worth the time and effort we put in.”

She half turned to the Klingon and smiled. “And I see enough help here that I wonder if my miners are going to be needed?” She laughed half teasing.

K’letn laughed and said “Silly human. I mean the rock strata. I thought you were some kind of miner?” and she laughed.

Bree laughed. “Well if that’s what you are looking for, let’s go deeper. Most mines are played out this shallow.” Shaking her head and laughing she headed down a random branch off of the main one, grabbing a hand held lamp and mining cutter from one of the tables as they passed. Once the reached a depth that Bree was satisfied with, she paused and ran the light over the walls. It was still partially lit here, but the lamp made the veins of ore stand out when struck at the right angle.

Pulling her cutter out and chipping a small chunk off in her hand, she looked it over, the light playing from the flashlight over it on every angle. “If this plays out thru the whole system, we may have something here.” She was excited and smiled up at the Klingon woman, but then her face when dark and she scowled, looking into the deeper recess of the cave as Klingons and other races walked calmly back n forth making sure everything was shored up and safe for mining to begin.
“Which begs the question… why did they leave?” She looked back at K’letn, “And who were they?” She didn’t like unknowns. And the fact this mine was in no way played out, yet still abandoned, made her curious about the whys and wherefores of it all. She glanced up at the woman after a moment. “Was anything unusual or interesting found while you all were setting up?”

K’Letn shrugged and said “Nothing was reported other than a few scavengers. They’re being searched and then disposed of.” in a disturbingly nonchalant fashion. “How far down do these go, do you think?”

“Good… that means it shouldn’t be in too bad of shape.” At the question, Bree smiled. “I’m glad you asked. How about we find out?” She took the light and shone it down the corridor. “We will have to be careful if the air gets thin, or the shoring isn’t still in good condition. But I think so long as we don’t disturb anything, we should be fine.” She was about to turn to head deeper in and she shook her head. “Ok, so I get over zealous. Let’s go grab a hand or two and at least one more weapon, shall we? And let someone else know where we are heading. Hate for us to miss dinner cause no one could find us,” she winked. “I didn’t bring any ale on the shuttle.”

She nodded back towards the opening to see who would join them and if Urg was around to tell. She also decided to record her decision on the shuttle as well as check in with her assistant in case anything went sideways on their search. Or rather, went under.

She tapped her comm badge, =^=

K’letn tapped something on her wrist communicator and in less than a minute two armed guards, one Klingon and one Andorian, came to them and handed each a small pack. “Water, rations, medkit, emergency lights, tricorders.” the Andorian said. Each if the new arrivals had the same purple stain on their faces.

The arrival of the help, and supplies, before they’d gotten half way back, was a huge surprise. “Well…ummm…” she glanced back at her companion with a grateful smile. “Ok then.” She laughed. “Can you have then notify the base we’re exploring the caverns and will check in by 1800?”

That gave them about five hours to see where the caves led and get back. Seemed like plenty of time.

“If so, once sent, we’re set to go. They joining us?” She nodded to the two who had brought the packs.

K’letn smiled and said “Why? Want to get me alone, Fire Born?” and then she laughed. He made a single motion and one guard, the Andorian, took position at the front and Klingon brought up the rear. She looked at Brianna and said “Come, let’s see what trouble we can get into on five hours.”

Brianna didn’t miss a beat, though she did manage to blush. “I thought Klingons weren’t interested in humans. Too frail, I believe I was told.” She smiled and nodded as their escorts took front and back. “But I am sure, together, there is plenty of time to get into … something.” She laughed and followed her guide deeper into the caves.

“Perhaps I’m curious as to how much spirit you really have.” K’letn replied as they began to walk further into the tunnels.

Bree laughed softly. “I’m curious how my spirit may get me in trouble. Though I admit I’m also intrigued by the prospect.”

Twenty minutes into their exploration, the Andorian held up a fist and the party froze. His antenna quivered and then pointed to a side passage off to their left. He turned back to the Klingon at the rear and simply gave him a look. Simultaneously, they both set their weapons on the ground and pulled blades. Silently, they moved away from the light and into the darkness.

K’letn smiled in low light of the handheld illumination she carried and put a finger to her lips. She indicated that Brianna listen but remain quiet.

The Head of Mining paused, her hand going to her own weapon. She had been about to follow the men when K’letn stopped her and silenced her. A single nod and she stood still, straining to hear what was happening.

Silence. Nothing was heard in the stale air of the tunnel. Then, ever so faintly, a soft sound like thuck was heard. A few moments later, both guards arrived back and the Andorian was wiping an odd looking axe-slash-dagger on a piece of cloth he certainly didn’t have with him when departed the group.

“Clear.” was all he said, and K’letn led the way down the passage. After a few dozen feet, light could be seen coming from around a bend, and that led them to a small opening at the end of the passage.

A pallet was set up on the floor by the far wall, and an EV suit lay near the entrance. Boxes and crates were stacked around the ‘room’; and in the middle of the place, face down, was a corpse. The species was hard to tell, but a slowly expanding pool of greenish blood was flowing from it.

The thud made Bree frown till both guards reappeared. “Should’ve known better,” she half chuckled under her breath.

As they reached the end of the tunnel, the frown returned. Seems like a bit more securing off the site was going to be needed including energy barriers along any back doors. “Well… I’m guessing this place isn’t played out after all.” She made her way to the crates and boxes trying to figure out if they were taking things out of the tunnels or storing things in them.

She also checked the body for identification of any kind. “Let’s see if we can figure out who else is interested in my claim.”

K’letn moved Bree out if the way before she touched the body. “No use getting your hands dirty with this. Check the boxes and see what you can make of them.” and she knelt by the corpse and rolled it over carefully.

The two guards split up and the Andorian went with Bree. Behind them, K’letn and the other Klingon began speaking in their tongue… and rhe tone was not one that would let anyone think they were happy.

The guard started opening boxes for Bree to examine. Some were basic supplies. But others were artifacts. Some she recognized as Romulan, Klingon, and various other races. Even some of those she didn’t recognize. “I’m thinking smugglers. I’m guessing the way these are cobbled together in these crates, they were picked up in no particular order.”

She turned back to the pair. “Anything there?”

K’letn looked up at Brianna and growled. “Unfortunately… yes there is. Its a Romulan. And look at this.” and she extended her hand towards Brianna.

She dropped an an object into Bree’s palm. It was a small device of some kind. Its function wasn’t evident at first glance, but it was very high quality… even covered in green ichor.
