SNIP

The guard started opening boxes for Bree to examine. Some were basic supplies. But others were artifacts. Some she recognized as Romulan, Klingon, and various other races. Even some of those she didn’t recognize. “I’m thinking smugglers. I’m guessing the way these are cobbled together in these crates, they were picked up in no particular order.”

She turned back to the pair. “Anything there?”

K’letn looked up at Brianna and growled. “Unfortunately… yes there is. Its a Romulan. And look at this.” and she extended her hand towards Brianna.

She dropped an an object into Bree’s palm. It was a small device of some kind. Its function wasn’t evident at first glance, but it was very high quality… even covered in green ichor.

Bree frowned and rolled the device over in her hand. Using the cuff of her slacks, she wiped some of the green slime off. Now crouched down beside the Klingon, she shook her head. “What’s a Romulan doing here? And do you have any idea what this is? Because till just now, I was simply thinking smugglers. But this, and your faces,” she glanced at her companion, “make me think there’s more to this than mere smuggling.”

She didn’t like the idea of more than simple thievery going on in her caves.

K’letn looked at the Klingon and said something. The warrior slammed a fist against his chest and took off at a sprint out of the cave. K’letn looked at Brianna and said “Wait. And… don’t touch anything.” and she moved to the entrance to the cavern.

Thirty minutes passed in silence when lights could be seen coming down the passage, accompanied hy Klingon voices… and one in particular.

Urg appeared in the entrance and looked more than a little irritated. He looked at K’letn, exchanged a few words, and he grunted in conclusion. Looking at Brianna he said “Fire Born. Let me see that.”

When the device was placed in his hand, he rolled it over a few times, his fingers moving about in his palm. Finally, he spit on the ground and said “Tal Shiar.” and he looked at Brianna.

“So just what have you found here, Fire Born?”

Urg, House Duroc

By the time Urg had spit, Brianna had had enough. Crossing her arms as the Klingon Lord before her asked what she had, she shook her head. “I don’t know. But I suggest someone tell me right now what is going on. Because OBVIOUSLY you know more than me.” Anger and frustration rose in her voice as she moved towards Urg, her hands dropping to her sides and a stance that said she would slug him if she didn’t get answers soon. “So that means asking what I have is a useless query. Now what… is… going… on?” Her last words pointedly singularly pronounced for emphasis as she moved to stand almost toe to toe with the Klingon man. Her ‘Fire Born’ name was evident more now than ever as she glared at Urg with a look that said she wouldn’t look away, or budge, till she had some answers.

Urg looked at her and with a look he hadn’t shown her before… anger. Glaring down at the diminutive Head of Mining he literally groweled out “And how the f%$k should I know, human? You’ve seen as much of this place as I have… more even! And you are the one who found a Tal Shiar hideout, a Tal Shiar communicator and homing beacon. So how about I ask you what is going on, eh? And you have one chance to convince me you didn’t know about this before or, Fire Born or not, I will bury you where you stand!”

As Urg spoke, all of the assembled members of his House shared glances and a few who had seen him enraged previously took a few not-so-small steps back. K’letn’s hand dropped to her side arm and she looked at Brianna from behind Urg. Her look was also a new one to Bree… fear. Apparently Urg was more than just crazy… he was fear inspiring in the hardiest of warriors.

Lord Urg, House Duroc

Perhaps fear and ignorance were a bad combination. But Bree didn’t back up. She did feel a shiver at his growl, though. Instincts couldn’t be quelched. But as Urg demanded she prove she had nothing to do with the smugglers, she held her ground and didn’t back up.

She opened her mouth to snap back, but actually stopped. She clenched her hands a moment and took a deep breath before responding. When she did, her voice was calm and steady, but an octave lower than usual. Like him, she was furious. But bound and determined not to let this incident ruin the friendship she had begun with him.

“If you truly believe I had anything to do with this, then nothing I say will change your mind. Only what I did and what I do. Ask your Lady and the guards who are here. I was as surprised as them. And I could not feign the ignorance I had at seeing the devices that were found. It’s true, I know of the words ‘Tal Shiar’. But I have had no dealings with them and had no clue this was what that was. All I know is a dead Romulan lays amongst crates that have artifacts, some I’m sure we’re stolen. So I ask you to look at me and see if you think my outrage at not knowing what was happening here, was faked. Your Lady and the others spoke Klingon. I have no idea what was said, only that they knew more than I and that’s why I exploded.”

She paused and remained looking at him, unmoved, wondering if her Fire had just burned her to the grave.

Ur g looked at her, his expression unchanging. He reached forward slowly and grabbed a handful of the front of her shirt and lifted her sliwly off the ground and put her face to face with him. “Never… and I mean never… talk to me like that again. I have been nothing but honest with you, O’Harra. Remember that.” and he lowered her to about a foot off the ground and then dropped her.

“Okay! Let’s see what’s in the crates. Open them up and let’s get an inventory!” he said excitedly and with a huge grin, as if the previous twenty seconds had never happened. His guards immediately began doing as instructed, a level of tension left the room so quickly it was almost audible.

House Duroc

She cried out a sharp gasp and grabbed his wrist with both her hands as he lifted her. His words shook her but she merely clenched her jaw and nodded once in a short silent acknowledgement. To her personal relief, she didn’t sputter some groveling apology.

When he turned to walk away, she took a moment to gather herself, afraid if she took a step, her legs would betray her and drop her where she stood. “The couple I opened had mixed results in them. I gather,” she took a breath to steady herself and turn to him, “that’s they’re gathering where they can and using this as staging till crates are full for shipping or distribution.”

Urg went to one of the crates and picked up an ‘artifact’ and examined it. It was a Romulan statue of a woman holding the head of another woman. Urg looked at for a moment, said “Fake.” flatly, and then chucked it against the wall by Brianna, shattering it into pieces. Inside were small pebbles of some kind of purple and silvery mineral. Urg then started doing the same to the other ‘artifacts’.

Lord Duroc

She couldn’t help it, Brianna came up beside Urg laughing. “Ok I get they’re fake. But please stop throwing them around. It really does litter up the place.” She gently laid a hand on his arm. “Please…” she added a bit more nicely than usual. “Besides, even studying *fakes( would allow us some insight into who these folks were working for.

“Bah!” the giant Klingon said and smashed another because he could, but then held off. “Tal Shiar aren’t so sloppy as to allow such a clue to be available. But feel free to waste your time.” and he rummaged through the rest of the crates.

As her hand dropped from his arm, she noticed the pebbles and minerals in the crate. “Hang on… what’s this?” She gingerly reached to grasp a small handful of thre stones. Cautiously because she didn’t know if they had sharp edges.

“How should I know? I thought you were a miner or something?” he said as he glanced back to look before picking up the Romulan body by the belt around it’s waist. The corpse dangled at an odd angle as the body was hanging from the belt, but face up. Urg slung it onto the pallet in the corner and then drew a large knife and knelt beside the body, his frame shielding what he was doing form view, but not stopping the sounds of cloth… and then flesh… being cut.
