: Beid nodded and made sure to retain the proper greeting and response. He then said “We will remember. We are so happy to meet you, Counselor. Or is it Doctor?” he asked.

: Beid, CSO

: OOC: Sent the note.

“Sathut is sufficient. In fact, I prefer my name to any title, please,” the alien spoke with a slight laugh. “Now, enough about my world. Let us talk about you for a moment. You are, my information tells me, a joined Trill?” he commented with a decent level of curiosity present in his voice. “I have studied the psychology of such a thing, but it is a very different thing to meet one of your kind in person,” he added.

Sathut

Beid smiled and said “And we are somewhat of a scientific anomaly in that aspect as well. Our joining was… much more… than the standard Symbiote - Host joining that we have had before.” There was an odd effect in his voice that wasn’t present before. Almost like a slight reverberation, or echo, in his speech. “We are truly symbiotic. It is usual in the Joining for the Symbiot to share it’s memories and emotions with the host; and incorporate some of it’s own personality into the Host’s as well. But when we Joined, we both remained almost wholly intact but completely together, if that makes any sense.” and he laughed. “We have dialogue with each other on a intimacy level neither of us has ever known. It is as if we were two separate parts of a single unit brought back together after a long separation. It has been… truly wondrous to experience.”

Beid, CSO

Sathut was quiet as he listened to the words of the Trill. “It is certainly not an experience I can relate to. Even in all my studies, I have no real precedent for understanding what you have experienced. I apologize if I am not as skillful in counseling you as I would be with counseling a single mind,” he sighed, although a smile was present on his face. “I hope you will still come to me in any time of confusion. That is, after all, my job here,” he said with a grin. “Now…” he sat back for a moment. “Before we properly begin, would you like something to drink?”

Sathut

Beid smiled. “Yes, please! I would love a Bajoran coffee, if you don’t mind.” and he paused for a moment. “We are very confident that you have all the necessary skills to assist us as necessary. It is a learning process for us all, isn’t it?”

Beid, CSO

Sathut nodded and replicated the desired drink, carrying it over to Beid and handing it to him. It was quite bizzare to watch the cat-sized alien walk with a human-sized cup between his hands. It could be seen that the drink on his desk was in a notably smaller container. He sat on his own chair. “So, how are you feeling today?” he asked.

Sathut

“Most excellent. We have been sleeping well, and we have many tasks in the lab that we take great enjoyment from.” Beid replied.

Beid, CSO

“Why did you join Starfleet?” Sathut asked with a smile.

Sathut

“The Beid hosts have historically been older candidates. Haanan is the youngest host, and it afforded each of us a chance to explore and experience new things on such a grand scale!”

Beid, CSO

Sathut nodded thoughtfully. “Interesting,” he said with a small smile. “If you will, can you tell me about your life before the joining? Haanan’s, I mean. We can talk about your many lives later or in further sessions,” he suggested. “Where were you born, what was your family life like?” he asked.

Sathut

Beid smiled and looked off into the distance. “Our family, because we see the host’s family as now part of the Beid lineage and family unit, is wonderful. The parents are both living, as is our younger sister. They own a small shop on Trill in the capital city selling clothes and jewelry. Haanan was born in the city and worked there growing up. Interestingly, no one in the family had ever been selected for Joining until Haanan. He came to the attention of the previous host when it came time for selection, and Beid met with him and his family. He is a most intelligent and capable young man, and a true friend.”

Beid, CSO

Sathut smiled. “That’s certainly positive. What about the host previous to Hanaan?” he asked.

sathut

Beid’s smile faltered slightly, replaced by a wistful look with no small amount of sadness. “Arilid. She was… amazing. A pure desire for knowledge unlike any of the other hosts. Her passing was… painful. But she was most excited to meet Haanan, and she was adamant that he be selected. Her memory will be one of the most… intense… that Haanan and future hosts will need to contend with.”

Beid, CSO

“I have heard that sometimes a symbiote has the possibility of taking over and suppresing the personality of a new host. is that true?” Sathut inquired.

Sathut

“ ‘Taking over’ is a bit of a stretch, but yes. The Symbiote, by our very nature, are very strong willed. They must be in order to survive. The positive side of that is a sense of continuity through vastly numerous life cycles of a hosts… there is always a ‘foundation’, if you will, of what is and what was. This allows the Host to have a sense of familiarity when they are exposed to the memories and emotions of past hosts. The negative side of that will is that if the Host is not strong, open emotionally and mentally, to the Symbiote… well, then the Symbiote’s personality will tend to dominate the Host. It occurs… not frequently, but it is not uncommon either. The experience is not a pleasant one for the Host or the Symbiote, I assure you. And yes, we speak from experience.” he said with a look off to the side and a clouding of his features.

Beid, CSO

“Did the Beid ysmbiote once take over a host in the manner you refer to? I apologize if that is a touchy subject, and you are not obligated to reply,” he said. His analysis of the Science Officer’s mental state was nearly complete, but he was pretty confident in his findings.

Sathut

Beid sighed and waved his hand to dismiss any concern. “No, no. Not touchy. It’s just a much more fulfilling experience when Host and Symbiote are ‘in synch’, for lack of a better term. And yes, the domination did occur in our past. Twice. The first time was desperately unsettling.” and he leaned forward and looked intently at the Counselor.

“You see, we are not used to being alone. In a normal Joining even, there is always a sort of subconscious communication occurring between Host and Symbiot. All the time, even when we sleep. When the Host is not strong enough, that communication isn’t there. So from the Symbiot side, it is like being part of a never-ending conversation that suddenly goes completely silent. From the Host’s perspective, it is more akin to being trapped in a sensory deprivation chamber. It takes a great deal of internal effort to reach a Host in that situation. So the first time it happened, Beid spent most of that cycle in intense mediation to try and keep the Host from going mad. We were successful, but it took it’s toll on both parties. The second time, the Symbiot was much more prepared. It took some doing, but we were able to coach the Host to the point we could coexist without issue.”

At that Beid, sat back and took a breath. “We are quite fortunate, actually, to have experienced that. It has made this Joining that much more exceptional. And you are fortunate too as well, Doctor. I am not certain, but this may be the first time such matters have been discussed outside of our culture. Why, you might have quite an interesting scientific article before you.” he said with a grin. “And we are happy to assist if you wish to pursue that, actually. Knowledge is wasted if not shared, after all.”

Beid, CSO

“If it is something that you are comfortable with. As a counselor, I am sworn by oath to keep private any matters discussed with me, unless otherwise needed for ship security, or directly allowed to be shared by my patients. And please, do call me Sathut,” he said with a small smile.

“Only if you call me Haanan.” the CSO replied with a smile of genuine warmth. “And of course. I am always happy to see knowledge and experience shared.”

The story had been intriguing. Painful, in a way, to listen to. “I think that is all, unless there is something specific you wish to speak about with me?” Sathut asked.

Sathut

“No, nothing comes to mind. But I did so enjoy our talk. If you need anything from us, please do not hesitate to ask.” and he stood up and held out his hand. “A genuine pleasure, Sathut. I hope we can talk again soon.”

Beid, CSO

“It was my pleasure,” Sathut replied with a kind smile. He didn’t shake Beid’s hand - the height difference made it rather difficult - but kindly ushered him to the door. “If you ever need someone to speak with in a professional or personal capacity, don’t hesitate to drop by. My door is always open, unless I have someone else in with me of course,” he chuckled.

Sathut

“Of course. I thank you for your time, Counselor. We look forward to speaking with you again.” and Beid turned to leave. As he reached the door, he stopped and turned. “Sathut, would like to have dinner with us this evening? We are acutely aware that it is somewhat difficult to make social connections on a new ship, so we thought a friendly dinner would be a nice welcome to you.”

Beid, CSO

“I would appreciate the opportunity. I am aware of the difficulty, although with a job like mine, I do tend to, at the least, meet everyone quite quickly. When and where would you like to meet?” he asked, tail flicking back and forth gently.

Sathut

Beid smiled at the acceptance and said “How about the Lounge? Say… 1900 hours?”

Beid, CSO
