OOC: Frederick (do you prefer Fred?) .. have a look in the Engineering thread. I’m going to get you into the sim here .. basically, post your reply there and then ‘meet’ at Sickbay. We’ll rendezvous there. You can do the multiple timelines if you like in talking more with Crawford, but also post your arrival in sickbay. … Gene

OOC: I go by Frederic (no k, it’s a weird spelling), Fred, and Fritz, so whatever is good, haha. I will say that I haven’t gotten into the main sim because I came aboard kinda in the middle of it and am pretty lost as to what’s going on now. I’ll try to catch up and get my response in there soon.
OOC: Oh blast. I added the k. Sorry. Right, so we’re not in the middle but closer to the beginning. Here’s the gist so far:
- A body was discovered moments before it was beamed out into space. The identifier on the blood and who did the transporting was Gully, though he was in his quarters when sought out. When confronted he ran into his quarters and was found almost dead. He’s now in sickbay.
- Shortly after that there was a computer call to red alert and all crew to emergency stations. When it was attempted to work the computer for things it was found to be locked down to command staff only, and that to the COS and Captain. The ship has moved from Warp 3 to sunlight and there is no control over navigation or tactical.
- The power drain was a recent discovery and we’re now just investigating it. The sim started in a way with the thought of it being a murder investigation and mystery, though has recently morphed into more.

Oliver sat down slowly. “The accommodations are satisfactory - I mean, excellent! - really. This ship has a lot of tech I could only dream of. The doctor in sickbay… Harding, I think, he was able to help me with some discomfort in my hand.”

“The doctor is highly competent,” Sural replied, presenting a Vulcan level compliment.

Oliver rubbed the back of his neck, “I studied mostly mechanics at the Academy. The real nuts and bolts machinery side of engineering, I guess.” He smiled a bit, “I did really well in my class when I graduated last year.” He stopped for a second, trying to think of how best to explain his aptitude, “I guess you could say that… I mean I do really well with my hands. When I can touch something, feel it, and work with it manually, I’m really good.” Oliver shifted a little, “More abstract problems, when the problem is removed from… My uh… My immediate surroundings, like system coordination, programming, that stuff; I don’t do so hot. I wouldn’t say I’m bad, but… Well I’m kind of bad in comparison to most of the other engineers you have.”

Oliver Pierce, Eng

“Everyone has their aptitudes. Never feel bad about your strengths. Were we to focus on where we are strong rather than trying to ‘even’ out one’s skills we would be, in my opinion, logically far better off as a team.” Sural replied. “Were we all the same we would be, as one eloquent professor said, ‘a sorry lot’. Others are better at programming, of course. However few have your skill in the hands on. Many things can be repaired or rerouted at the press of a display due to redundancies. Still, you are needed to fix the reason for the rerouting. Tell me, are you better at small machinery, such as a console or replicator or holodeck system, or the larger things such as engines or life support?”
- Sural

Oliver thought for a moment, “I don’t know. I’m probably better with smaller intricate parts,” his left hand unconsciously went to rest on his gloved, right one, “I’ve had more practice with those. Even so, I’m eager for the challenge of the big systems.” Oliver smiled just a little, “I used to repair old 20th and 21st century automobiles as a hobby back home, and, well, I think the Olympic is just about the coolest hot-rod I’ve ever seen. I’m really excited to start digging around.”

“You will find large and small here.” He considered what he said and lifted a brow at terming the Olympic as a ‘hot rod’. “Curious. What form of .. automobile do you most enjoy work on?” He had toured holo museums as part of an engineering field trip in his first year. He had found the vehicles to be very unique in their designs. Terrans were considerably creative beings.

Oliver let out a small laugh, “Mostly trucks, sir. The small ones, not the big ones were for transporting commercial goods.”

Sural lifted a brow. Trucks. That was a surprise. “I was rather fond in the design of one vehicle called a corvette. I found its curves and design to be aesthically pleasing and … logical.”

He then leaned forward. “Tell me, Ensign. What is the shuttle complement on board this vessel?”

Sural, CE

Oliver cocked his eyebrow but answered without having to think twice. “Ten Armadillo class shuttles, eight Longevity class runabouts, and five Workbees, spread over four hangers.” He’d read the ship specs and studied the schematics of the Mythology class almost religiously in preparation for this assignment, though in all honesty it wasn’t very different from his normal routine. At his heart, Oliver was a huge nerd for anything technical, and he kept up with starships and their specifications almost as a form of recreation. “Though that is just the standard compliment. I don’t know if the Olympic was outfitted differently for her mission.”

Oliver Pierce, Eng

He nodded. Inwardly he was impressed by the Ensign, though he was a Vulcan after all. Passion in a subject was always a good match in life. “Prior to this mission, as it was supposed to be in part an extended mission, Lt Davis opted to return to Earth to be with his family. His wife was anticipating her first child. This leaves me with a vacancy for a competent engineer to look after shuttle maintenance. They are not ‘trucks’, however we must improvise when we can.” He paused, then inquired. “Were you to take this position, what would be your first three steps that you would undertake to do?”

“There were no customizations in shuttles with this mission,” he added.
- Sural, CE

“I uh…” Oliver’s mouth felt dry. He blinked a couple times. Shuttles and Oliver didn’t always mix, and he always preferred to view them from a distance. Since the accident years ago that cost him his hand and his father, he’d only ridden in a shuttle on a handful of occasions, and each time under duress. Still, he wasn’t being asked to fly the damn things, he was being asked to fix them. He tried to remember one of his mother’s famous Starfleet Officer-isms, ‘Everyone in a crew does the job that’s asked, and that’s just how you keep the ship sailing. You do your part, and anything else is for the birds.’

He took a breath and regained his composure. If this was the job that was asked he’d try to stomach it. “I’d make a list of each shuttle and their hiccups. Not just what’s broken, but their quirks and what not. Any recurring oddities, whether they pull to the left, have recurring system malfunctions, the like. Next, I’d commit that list to memory,” He paused, thinking, “Then I’d try to get permission from you to start fine tuning the ships for more specialized tasks. Have one or two dedicated to having higher energy draw to the engines for emergencies or for when speed is mission factor, I’m sure sickbay wouldn’t mind a dedicated shuttle like that. Maybe one can be relieved of unneeded systems so we could free up some space to make it more suited for hauling things too and from the planetary surfaces, things that we don’t think we want to put through a transporter beam.” He scratched the back of his neck with his left hand, “I suppose that’s what I got.”
