“I hope you don’t mind if I call you Oliver?” Sathut asked. Them being at somewhat of a distance, Sathut did not shake the ensign’s hand. His arms were quite short and not able to cross that distance. He relaxed in his chair, tail flicking back and forth in a relaxed manner. “Now, shall we begin?” he asked with a small smile.

Oliver quickly retracted his hand while forcing another smile. “Sure on both counts.”

“First of all, if you could tell me a little about yourself? I can ask questions if you have trouble thinking of things to say, but you can start with… where you were born, perhaps. What your motivations were to joining Starfleet, and why you chose engineering for your career path?”

Oliver scratched the back of his head, “Oh, well, I’m from Hercules, that’s uh, Earth. Near San Francisco. I guess I’ve always been good with mechanics and machines.” He folded his hands in his lap, shifting uncomfortably, “And, you know when it came time to really think of work I… Well, my mother is an officer, and the Academy was right across the bay.” Oliver shrugged, “So I guess it just felt natural.”

Sathut nodded slightly and tilted his head. “Naturally. How was your experience within the academy? Your record states that you’ve seen your fair share of counselors. And yes, I am aware of why. It’s part of your record. But I won’t force you to talk about anything you don’t want to talk about.”

Sathut

Oliver’s jaw clenched, “Ah. Well, thank you. All things considered I’d rather not talk about my… Thank you.” Oliver’s voice got noticeably softer at the intimation of the incident that took his father.

He tried to speak up but only half managed to do so, speaking just above a whisper, “The Academy was the Academy, I guess.” He said with a shrug and a half smile, “I received honors for excelling in mechanics and practical engineering and demerits for my failures in programming and advanced computer use. I mean, it’s not like I’m bad at using the computer. I’m probably a good few steps ahead of most folks outside engineering and sciences. It’s just among my peers,” he gave a soft laugh, “I’m more of an analog guy I guess.”

Oliver Pierce (Eng)

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to trigger anything,” Sathut said quietly. “I can understand not being as good at something as those who you are surrounded by. The majority of my race finds themselves deeply attracted to working with their hands, in fields like engineering and technology design, where I found myself more drawn towards psychology and helping people. A very different strand,” he smiled slightly.

Sathut

Oliver rubbed the back of his neck, “No, you didn’t trigger anything it’s just… Unpleasant is all.” He took a deep breath, “Talking about it is just uncomfortable. Shuttles are what really kick-starts everything.”

Oliver laughed a little at Sathut’s second statement. The idea of a bunch of cat people as surly engineers was more than a little funny to him. “You’re right, that is a bit far off the beaten path.”

Oliver Pierce, Eng

“My father wasn’t particularly happy with my choice of profession, but that’s a story for another day,” he said with a small chuckle. “Now, how long have you been on the Olympic? Have you been settling in well so far?”

Sathut, CNS

“Only a few hours. I guess I’m settling in fine.” He shifted a bit in his chair, “How long did it take you to get used to this place?”

Oliver Pierce, Eng

“It took me longer than one might imagine to adjust to my first time aboard a Federation vessel. You must understand, the Galdori design of Starship is using much more… let’s say, organic shapes. Starfleet has a kind of clean chrome look they’re particularly fond of, and white lighting. The ships I was used to had a more blue, green, and brown tone to them, with soft shapes and skinny side-corridors for the Raka to crawl around in. The size of my chambers, for example - they’re so massive it took me a while to figure out what to do with all the space. My people don’t build in large proportions unless we are purposefully building for larger people. So it took a while. But adjusting from that ship to this one… I think I was settled within a few days, honestly. I like my job, and that helped,” he said with a smile.

“Have you any disagreements or troubles with any of the crew aboard this vessel? Any relationships other than family back home you might be missing?”

Sathut

Oliver shook his head, “I have a few friends back on Earth, but I’m not the most…” He thought for a second, “Social of people. Plus, most of the people here seem nice.” He paused another second, “Well there is another Ensign in Engineering who calls me ‘Ollie’, and I don’t know how I feel about that, but besides that, good people.” He gave a smile, “I’m pretty excited for my job.”

Oliver Pierce, Eng

Sathut nodded. “Some individuals find it difficult to recall identities of all the crew and thus find it easier to use shortenings and nicknames. Perhaps that is why that Ensign has taken to referring to you as Ollie?”

Sathut

Oliver scratched the back of his head, “I mean I guess. I think Reno, I mean Ensign Crawford, is just…” He struggled to find the right words, “Very Texan. Oh, uh, that’s a region of Earth that’s got a reputation for rather, erm, outgoing people.” He gave a short laugh, “More of a stereotype, really, but I think Reno plays into it on purpose.”

Oliver Pierce, Eng

Sathut nodded slightly, smiling. “Well, to each their own,” he reflected, writing a few notes on his PADD. A few moments passed, then he looked up at the ensign. “Is there anything in particular that you are concerned about? Anything that you would like to talk about?”

Sathut

Oliver shook his head, “Nothing that comes to mind. I guess I’m going to talk to my department head next. Anything I should be on the lookout for with Lt. Sural? If you know him, I mean.”
