Hamilcar stepped off the turbo lift and looked around, smiling at the black beauty of Black Rock Station. He stopped for a moment to admire it. Having spent the better part of the last 10 years in the Vega-Omicron sector serving in various functions for the diplomatic and exploration commands, he was glad to have been moved on to something else. What that something else was, he wasn’t sure. His orders didn’t specify, and that concerned him.

As he looked around a memory flashed into his mind. A memory of this last assignment. He had been assigned as the Executive officer of the USS Gus Grissom, a Wambundu-class ship assigned to the Vega-Omicron sector. During a first contract assignment with a new species, the Toy-Lar-Gon’es, A misunderstanding at the conference resulted in a an attack on the conference and the Grissom. Hamilcar in command of the Grissom when the attack occurred. A rogue faction of the Toy-Lar-Gon’es was attacking the Grissom and the conference using a form of transporter. This transporter technology required fixed points to beam to or from. While the Grissom was investigating this, it came under attack by a squadron of drone fighters, causing heavy damage to the ship.

Hamicar was ordered by his captain to take the ship and leave orbit, stating that the attackers had no interest in the Grissom if it left. Hamilcar planned to follow orders when the operations officer noticed a pattern to the attacks. The drones were being controlled at a facility on the southern most continent, which scans revealed was also the main staging area for the attacks. The rogue elements were using this station to send in attackers through their fixed transporter system. Hamilcar ordered weapons fire on the facility, but targeting sensors for the ships weapons had been damaged and the tactical officer stated that he was unable to make a positive lock on the facility. Hamilcar told him to do the best he could and fire when ready.

The resulting attack devastated the facility, disabling the drones and allowed the primary government to secure the conference. However, three civilians were killed during the Grissom’s attack. The outcome of the battle proved to be a success, the conference went ahead after a lengthy delay, the rogue elements of the government was either captured or killed, and the federation was able to secure a treaty due to the Grissom’s “Heroic” actions. However, Hamilcar was cited for the death of the civilians, and for disobeying a direct order from his captain.

The outcome had been a success, but he wasn’t sure what else he could have done. He knew that if he had followed orders and withdrew, the conference would have been overrun and Federation diplomats, as well as his Captain would have been captured or killed. It was a no win scenario and a choice had to be made.

Now, here he was, ordered to report to the Black Fleet commander for assignment. He knew that his had to be part of some disciplinary assignment for his failure to follow orders. That didn’t sit well with Hamilcar.

He continued to walk, going over in his mind what possible punishment he would have to endure. A desk assignment? The Commander in charge of the Janitory department. He approached the door to the Fleet Commander and pressed the chime. “Passus didici Mutata” he thought as he waited for a response.

-Commander Hamilcar, incoming CO

Sitting behind his desk, Fleet Captain Branch was looking over the file of the Commander he hoped would take on a very difficult role. The Fleet Commander was already notified that the man had entered the building, so he quickly put away the file just as the buzzer to his door sounded.

“Come in!” The Fleet Captain called out, as he stood up to great the Commander. He was aware of Hamilcar’s past situation, but knew that sometimes taking extreme measures, like insubordination, could be water under the bridge.
