The trio could hear a soft voice in the back of their heads. “Calibrating…” For those familiar with telepathy, it would feel similar.

It was soft, almost not there, and one where, if one was not paying attention would think that they had, themselves had thought the word. Sural felt it as a soft push against his own thoughts, like another’s breath. He did not sense that it was invasive as in trying to give him anything, but, like soft tendrils was touching points of his mind as though seeking something.

Telepathy had not been used on her before, she was left ignorant to its touch. When it did grace her, she was fascinated albeit uncomfortable at the feeling. To Ishtar, it felt little more than an echo; a gentle voice emanating from the back of her mind. Like a whisper in a cave, she could sense it was around her–not quite in front, not quite behind.

Then, the blackness was replaced by a bright white light, and the group of four found themselves in a white plain, nothing around them except for one another. At first their companions had the shape of silvery globs, and even looking at their own bodies they could see silvery globs in the shape of a person - except for Sathut, who was fully formed.

‘Curious,’ Sural thought. ‘Not unlike some races perspective of an ‘afterlife’.

After a few moments, the simulation built an image of their bodies from their own self image and from the way the others in the group saw them. It was a fairly accurate representation.

Sathut manifested a black chair, and sat down in it. “Well, what do you think?” He asked with a smile.

Sural gazed around, assessing what he saw.

D’vash first squinted at the total brightness of this plane of existence. As his eyes grew accustomed to the surroundings, he brought his hands up and looked at them, then turmed to look at the others in turn. “Fascinating,” he simply replied.

Instinctively, Ishtar’s hands flew to her eyes, shielding them from the brightness of this realm. Slowly acclimating, she glanced between the four of them. It felt empty, this room, as if they were standing on a plane where they were the only creatures in existence. And yet, it felt whole. She didn’t understand the feeling, and chose not to assess it. Some things were meant to be left alone. Turning away, she searched for any indication of something beyond the blinding white.

The chair. How had he done that?

“How did you conjure that chair?” She inquired, curiously. Deep down, she knew the answer: he thought of it. This was a mind chamber; it could manifest imaginaition into reality. Still, she was a scientist..her mind begged her to break it all down, as impossible as that may be.

“This is the Mind Chamber. The translation is not exact. It sounds better in my language. When we first made this technology and shared it with humans, some suggested we call it The Matrix. But apparently that has connotations within human culture that we would rather avoid.” Sathut chuckled softly. He waved his arm, and three more chairs manifested. Touching the chairs, they would find the chairs felt totally real.

Ishtar smirked at the word ‘Matrix.’ It was a concept she had heard of only in ancient Earth’s science fiction installations baring that same name. A virtual reality built by artificial intelligence, not dissimilar from what this Mind Chamber seemed thus far. Although, she suspected Sathut’s people did not use it for the occupation of the mind while the body was grown as a powerhouse for their civilization.. thankfully so.

“That’s probably for the best, Counselor.” Nhmashal admitted, amusement faint in her expression.

Sural took this in. A bright .. nothing. Some might consider it a view of an afterlife. Sural considered it something empty that needed to be filled. It was an empty holodeck; it just looked different. He saw the chairs and a brow rose; evidently thought created the reality and Sathut was, in essence, the creator. The Vulcan chose to stand; sitting at this time seemed inappropriate. “I assume that this is the staging area before the program takes life?” He inquired. The Matrix. A matrix assumed some structure; this had none. He wondered at the inference and would need to reference it at some time.

This could be very disorienting, D’vash thought. An endless plain of nothing, yet the footing beneath them was solid enough. He sensed that if he started walking in one direction, he could do so indefinitely. He walked around the chair, feeling its ethereal solidness. Sitting down, he looked to Sathut and asked, “What’s next?”

Bump for Lt. Nhamashal

OOC: Thank you for your patience!
IC:
Her mind was intrigued, albeit her gut tentative. Approaching with caution, she took a seat, taking a second to contemplate the abcense of structure around them.

Ishtar turned to Sathut, unsure of what to expect. If anything was plausible in this realm, what would the counselor choose to do with that freedom? It was daunting, in many ways, the infinite possibilities.

Nhamashal, CSO

“Yes, this is a staging area. I have created an adventure similar to an ancient earth game called ‘dungeons and dragons.’ As a part of that, I would like you to try out one of the features of the Mind Chamber which is exclusive to it and not within the Holodeck program. Perception alteration.”

He waved his hand, and instead of the cat they were used to seeing, a broad shouldered human man with dark skin sat in the chair. He opened his mouth, and out came the same voice. “We are able, with this technology, to bypass the sensory processing neurons and make the mind believe that it is contained within a much different body than one may be used to. You will see a menu before you with some choices. Please, choose one.”

As he said it, a scrolling menu appeared with pictures and names before each of them. They wouldn’t see the menus before the others, giving them a hint that Sathut’s arm waving was likely interaction with a menu of his own. It contained human, elf, dwarf, halfling, dragonborn, tiefling, and more. Including options to make them appear like the four races of Galdor. And several Federation alien species!
