When the away team was altogether in the transporter room, the tech reported that the portable generator had already been sent to the freighter.

“Very good, Ens. Delambre. Send us to the engine room as well,” D’vash reported.

The XO stepped onto the transporter pad with the others. “Let’s keep our eyes and ears open, gentlemen. Energize, Ensign.”

What met the away team’s eyes upon arrival was flickering lights and a cluster of consoles. The consoles, still powered for the moment, had readout of the ship’s current status. Run through the universal translator, it read: [Singularity core failure. Remaining power- 15%. 1 hour until total power failure.]

One Romulan occupied the room, seated in a chair facing away from the Starfleet officers. He had not so much as glanced at them since their arrival, he hadn’t moved at all, he remained face-forward at his station.

Sural initiated a translator display on his EVA suit that would overlay and translate Romulan to Federation Standard. While Romulan was a variant of Vulcan, Sural had never learned it or considered learning it. As he read the status he computed their odds. Core failure would cause a very tidy implosion which would not do well inside a Bay.

This was not a complete core failure. The core had simply reached its limits and would soon shut down.

Considering what he knew - or rather what he didn’t know - of Romulan drive technology, he realized he had suggested wrongly. It would not implode - just .. die. That did take a weight off his internal chronometer.

Moving toward the generator that was upon a anti grav sled. The sled was deactivated and both units lay ready on the deck. “Engineer,” Sural called over, striding toward him. “We have come to aid you to stabilize your vessel.” He looked around. Even with translation he could ‘guess’ at two or three areas that might be viable to hook up the generator, though asking would be simply the most logical. “Please assist me in boosting your power with the generator we have brought.”

The Romulan did not move at all, or show any signs of hearing Sural.

If he saw no response from the Romulan Sural would reach out his hand to the man’s shoulder. While he was averse to touch, being a traditional Vulcan in that manner, the EVA suit added that layer of mental protection, so to speak.

The Romulan slumped back in his seat. He was dead. By all appearances recently so. Rigor mortis had not set in, but his blue eyes had turned milky, and he showed no signs of breathing.

-Matrix

Curious. Life support had failed, though that did not mean that all the air was gone or that the ship would have cooled to the point of freezing. Unable to scan for a pulse in the suit, Sural simply noted the death look. “Recently deceased, Commander. He should be beamed back to the ship to determine cause.” Letting go of his grip the Vulcan was careful enough to ensure that the dead man would not fall to the deck. It was then up to him.

D’vash ordered the security team to set up a perimeter around the area in case of any surprises, then moved to the expired Romulan. He gave the man a go over, looking for any wounds or any indication of what may have killed the engineer.

Looked at closely, the man would appear to have wounds of various ages all over his body. It only took moving his shirt a little to show a hint of a large gash on his chest that had become infected.

“Think you can get us some power, Sural? At least for a little while? I want to be able to run a scan for any other life signs and make sure no one is hiding on us.”

His eyes scanned the instrumentation. This was a freighter and so all the panels were compressed into a much smaller space. Cargo was the value here, not engine space. Auxiliary ports were limited as well. Of the three that he had thought he noted before two were not easily compatible or, in one case, was not appropriate for a generator link. That left one. “I believe I have found a suitable port for power, Commander. I will prepare the generator.” Moving toward the anti-grav sled he powered it up, watching it rise off the decking with some strain. Those Zeta generators were not light. Once he received the confirmation that the balance was stable he guided it closer to the port.

With some effort, the port could be set up to work with a Starfleet generator. The lights stopped flickering and became steady. On the main engineering console, the display would change to show a more detailed ship status. The generator had bought them a good deal of time, but only a little power.

Sural could tweak things more but it would do no good. One could only do so much and logically time was of more import than his finessing. After hooking up and initiating the generator he could see he results. They had four hours now. It was not much but much better than they had previously. If the core failed then with it the ship, but that appeared to be inevitable. Perhaps they could do more hooking into the ships’ main power from the bay. But to what use at this time? The vessel was not going to fly again outside of considerable work at a shipyard.

“Life support and main computer are online Commander. All other main systems are offline. Core failure is now sitting at 4 hours.” He straightened and turned to the XO. “This ship will not fly again without considerable work at a spacedock. If we take her on board the Olympic we may be able to stabilize and keep their main drive operating. However, logically, that may be more effort than is required. We have access to the main computer. We can perhaps glean information from this.”
- Sural, CE

“That’s good enough for now, Chief. I just don’t want her exploding in the Oly’s Hangar Deck.”

After double checking that the environment was safe, the XO removed his ev suits helmet and set it aside. Taking a seat a computer console, he tapped into the ships logs and began downing information. While that was happening, he began a scan for any lifesigns on the vessel.

Odinson (XO)

No lifesigns other than those of the boarding party appeared. Crew rosters, past cargo manifests, and crew logs were all downloaded to the Olympic’s computers.

Sural left his EVA suit on for the time being. He was busy and he favored the HUD display on the visor of it to having to look things up by hand. When he had confirmed the uplink with the ship he said, “I confirm computer uplink with the Olympic. Scanning the computer for any sensor readings and visuals on their pursuers.” He looked over. “Unless you would like me to do more sir,” he reported .. the more being anything from exploring the ship to stabilizing systems. He admitted to curiosity about the ship, small as it was. What did his Romulan cousins do for vessel construction? He had no experience relating to this at all and had not studied them. This was new for him to have hands on with something he had only cursorily read about.
- Sural, CE

Sural would find record of three separate occasions during the journey when a vessel suddenly decloaked and attacked. It seemed that each time they dropped out of warp to let their engines rest, Suket was ready. Each attack was accompanied by a message from a severe looking Romulan woman, likely this “Commander Suket” they had been warned about.“You know what I want. Give it to me. I don’t care what happens to your miserable pack of cowards.” Each time, the Captain denied knowing what she wanted. The attacking vessel seemed almost like a smaller version of the Valdore type. It was difficult to tell exactly what equipment it had with a freighter’s sensors, but from her strategy, it would seem Suket was more interested in retrieving something than destroying the ship.

-Matrix

The Vulcan knew he was delaying in looking at the logs but he couldn’t help but scan through them a second time before making a report. “Commander, in reviewing their logs I am seeing some disturbing revelations.” He turned, facing the XO and this time removing the head covering. “There were three separate instances where a Romulan vessel - a more compact Valdore class according to the analysis, commanded by a woman named Suket - decloaked and attacked the cargo vessel. Suket wanted something that the crew here denied having. Unfortunately nobody in the logs defined what that ‘thing’ was.”

“That would make sense why she didn’t destroy this vessel. Whatever ‘it’ is is either still on the ship or in the possession of one our guests. And if it’s smaller than a Valdore class, they wouldn’t be able to tow it aboard.”

“Indeed,” Sural replied.

Sural had some thoughts on the matter, though it appeared to him that this Suket, who was not unattractive to him, was not going to give up. The question was what this was that she wanted. The stakes were raised with them coming into Federation space; that logically increased the value of whatever it was.
- Sural, CE

“Suket had this ship almost completely disabled. The question remains why she wouldn’t just board this freighter and search it?”

“A logical conclusion, Commander. They could have disabled the vessel at any time. Perhaps they were afraid that the crew would have destroyed the freighter and whatever they carried. Logically if they were allowed to travel to a place where they believed they were safe that option would not be readily available.”

D’vash hit his comm badge and connected to the the Olympic. “Captain, Sural has got the freighter stabilized with no danger of exploding. Security has searched as well–they didn’t find any booby traps or stragglers left behind. I’d say she’s safe to bring into the Olympic’s hangar bay.=^=

Odinson (XO)

Sural came up to Odinson. “Sir, I have another alternative. The vessel will simply die at this point if left on its own. It will not destruct. However, we do not at this time know whether whatever Sukat is seeking is on board or with the crew taken over. Perhaps we may employ some subtle misdirection. We may imply to the captain of the freighter that damages do not immediately allow us to take the vessel on board but that we will leave it here with a buoy, dispatching a Starfleet towing vessel to pick up the freighter while we bring the survivors to a Starbase. If they are amenable to this, we can assume that whatever Sukat is seeking is already aboard the Olympic. If there is pushback, we may assume that it is yet on board.”
- Sural, CE

D’vash considered Sural’s words. “That’s true, as long as we can get this straightened out before Suket arrives back here. Hell, she may be out there right now, cloaked and waiting for us to leave the area. I’ve got a feeling her ship is much like the Wolverine–small, fast, and dangerous. No match for a Mythology class, but could still do some damage to us. We have to also consider the fact that Reval doesn’t know what he’s carrying , either.”

Odinson (XO)

Sural persisted. “Logical, Commander. However, if the resource is a, as the Terrans call it, ‘human resource’ that would be aboard the Olympic already. Were it something portable, which it would have to be, else the freighter Captain would be aware of it, the individual would have been transported with it. Depending on the quality of the cloak on Suket’s vessel she may be able to do more than ‘some’ damage. She decloaked to fire on the freighter according to the logs, however that could be calculated psychological warfare only.”
