Pretha walked in and her body tightened as she readied her stance for a fight, hand on her phaser before realizing the battle stations call was because of what was outside.

Seeing NE Branson at the ready at the security station, Pretha stepped off to the side to remain out of view of wonder came to the screen as the hail was announced. Something told her right now was not the time for the heads of security to be seen.

Lt JG Pretha Oberon
CoS

The viewscreen lit up an the image of a Romulan woman came to centre. She had the state of a sociopath in her eyes. “I am Commander Suket of the I.R.W. Relos. You have something I want. Give it to me, and I’ll let you keep your band of traitors.” Reval stepped to the centre of the bridge. “Traitors. Traitors. Traitors!? We’re not the ones who abandoned everything Romulus stood for as soon as it was convenient!”
“Reval… you’re insignificant now. I will speak to the Captain of the Federation ship or I will open fire.”

-Matrix

Hamilcar remained seated watching the exchange with curiosity, while at the same time annoyed that the screen came on without his orders.

“Easy Reval, I’ll talk to her.” He said calmly. He stood up and put his hand on the romulans’ shoulder, in a gesture to move out of his way.

Reval stepped aside, but remained next to Jasar.

=^=This is Captain Hamilcar Jasar of the USS Olympic.=^= He put his hands in his pockets, he stood in the center of the bridge casually, his chin slightly up as if he didn’t have a care in the world.

-CO

=/\= Captain Jasar. I suppose I must educate you. Unless you secretly bear Intelligence agents. One of the traitors abandoned his service to the Empire. He is a key asset in an ongoing project. I will have him. By any means necessary.=/\=

-Matrix

These were the security situations Pretha hated. You can’t protect everyone when it’s ships firing against one another. And with everything else she had been doing, this was the first she was hearing about a traitor of any kind.

She shook her head slightly at the other security officer as he started to turn in reaction to the growing pitch of voices. The crew needed to remain calm and let the Captain handle this. Diplomacy wasn’t the Security Chief’s strength and she knew she couldn’t help right now except remain quiet, pay attention, and support her CO.

Reno chewed his lip and split his attention between the viewscreen - he had little chance to actually ‘see’ a real Romulan in the ‘almost flesh’. Being in engineering most of the time limited that opportunity. But the chief was away and a sitting duck in the freighter. With their shields up they’d not be easily able to beam them back. It certainly was a sticky situation. His eyes glanced at the power levels on the ship ensuring that the shields were up and at optimum levels. Romulans were tricky but at least the shields were between them and him.
- Reno, Eng NE

The Olympic’s power levels were at their optimum and shields were at full capacity.

-Matrix

=^=Greetings Commander.”Hamilcar stated simply. “Tell me about this agent. Why is he so important?=^= Hamilcar asked. He studied the Romulan intently as he awaited the reply.

-CO

Suket’s eyes narrowed. =/\=Romulan projects are not yours to know of. Especially after you let our world and people die.=/\= Reval’s every muscle tensed as though he wanted to leap through the viewscreen. =/\=You have five minutes to deliver what I want. After that, I will be forced to take him by whatever means necessary.

-Matrix

Hamilcar ignored the history lesson. =^=Well, who is he, who am I looking for? These people have requested asylum. Why should I just give this one person over to you?=^=

-CO

Suket made a sound almost akin to a growl. =/\=Meinok. He’s government property. His work is important to the regrowth of the Empire. The rest of them, take them or leave them. They’re not my problem.=/\=

As if cued by hearing his name, Dr Meinok sped onto the bridge. He looked at the image of Suket, then to Reval, and he whispered “I’m sorry.” before pulling a detonator out of his pocket. He glared at Suket. “Not one Romulan leaves this ship! Not. One. I will never work for you people again. I would rather die.” He primed his weapon. “Phosgene gas. Crude, but so simple to make. Carefully distributed, it will kill everyone on this ship. Starting here. With me.”

Suket kept her comment simple. =/\=Five minutes. Deliver him.=/\= And she cut off the channel.

-Matrix

Reno froze. Great. Always some crazy guy with a bomb. Since everyone - namely the rebel - was focused on and glaring at Suket Reno used one hand with his body in between them to lightly tap at the engineering controls - to isolate the bridge from the ventilation systems. If anything goes down it will only go down here, he thought. Unless he has more around the ship … Reno didn’t want to die but he’d not let a thousand others die from his cowardice. Site to site transport was too risky. He could easily activate it before the beam took. They had five minutes.
- Reno

The only areas still at risk of spread from Meinok’s device were the turbolift and Captain’s ready room.

Reval snapped out of his trance. He whispered to Jasar “Don’t trust her. She’ll attack this ship as soon as she has what she wants. Meinok… he must’ve left for a reason. Your ship, your call.

-Matrix

Reno made sure the shields were up. It was an automatic thing; the last thing he wanted to see was sabotage suddenly there. As he did that he locked out the turbolift to the bridge. As much as it would be nice to see the cavalry charging in that likely wasn’t a very good thing to do in this case with a trigger happy boobie trapped Rommie. One thing that he did do after setting a force field up in the turbolift was to scan to the Romulan ship. He knew that all his tapping might be suspicious but they still had a warbird out there to deal with. If they thought that the ship would attack it would behoove them to keep an eye on it.

The warbird had raised shields and primed weapons.

If he had a chance he’d open up a comms channel to security so they could hear what was going on on the bridge. They might not be able to use the lift but Reno woul dhope they’d be smart enough to know they could beam into the ready room undetected. He wasn’t concerned about that - his concern was to make sure that if anyone died by this one bomb it would only be the bridge people.

Reno

Security was alerted to the events on the bridge.

Pretha scanned the bridge quickly to see if anyone was gonna play hero. Seeing Reno tap the console, she desperately hoped he had called security or medical or had done something equally useful.

She then spoke in a calm voice, but one loud enough to be heard over the din of gasps and whispered shock. “I’m guessing you’re Meinok? I’m Pretha, Chief Security Officer. You’ve asked for asylum and the captain just claimed he’d give it. May I ask why you believe such drastic measures are called for when we have shown you no reason to feel angry or betrayed?”

Meinok’s eyes followed Pretha, but his body did not turn. “It is not that I don’t trust you- to a point. But every person has their limits. Trading one person to save 39 others may seem rather appealing. I will not orphan my son so that I can make bioweapons for the Tal’Shiar. I will not be a part of their murder machine. I am sorry Lt, Captain. But this was the only way to be sure.”

As she spoke, she moved her body sideways along the consoles and wall on the port side. Her cody moving ever closer to the main viewer. She was hoping to turn his gaze to her and focus on her and not the others on the bridge… especially the CO. It flitted briefly thru her mind that she was grateful the XO wasn’t here.

Pretha
CoS

Meinok didn’t move. He seemed genuinely regretful that it had come to this.

-Matrix

A light on the security station console began blinking, indicating an incoming mesage. Ir someone was able to see the meassage, it would read, =^=What kind of bio-weapon is on the bridge? Odinson.=^=

Odinson (XO)

Hamilicar raised his hands up and took a step sideways, slowly walking between the consoles and Meinok, towards the viewscreen. What ever happened, his first command, he had to deal with a suicide bomber, on his bridge no less. Not the start he was looking for. Regardless of what happened, he couldn’t let that bomb go off. He had an idea, he hoped it would work and his staff would understand.

“Tell me more” He said, as calmly as he could, still slowly walking between the consoles. “What do you think will happen if you are returned to her.” he said, gesturing with his head towards the view screen.

-CO

“You don’t understand. This” he gestured with his bomb “is what they want. Bioweapons. Ways of killing large numbers of people. Captain. I don’t want to do this. I don’t like this. I will hand you the device right now if you can assure me that the Tal’Shiar will never kill anyone with the products of my work again.

-Matrix

“How do you expect me to make that assurance?” He asked, still moving slowly, trying to position Meinok between him and his COS. “I can protect you as best as I can, but I can’t guarantee that they don’t already have some specifications or prototypes of your work.”

-CO

“If they had my formulas, they’d be using them- right now.” Meinok replied. Captain Reval was tired. Tired of running and tired of Meinok’s insanity. He spun on a heel and struck Meinok across the face. The bomb landed at Jasar’s feet. “You brought a monster hunting us. Into Federation space. You endangered everyone else so you could get away! Are you happy now Meinok? Ecurai lives long enough to see a war start for a creature like you.”

Suket hailed the Olympic.

-Matrix

Reno’s eyes followed the bomb and winced as it hit the deck. When it didn’t spew out its toxin he breathed easier but looked for an opening. Could he dive on it? Or perhaps .. with the Romulans so distracted he launched himself to dive on the bomb …
- Reno

Reval back-pedalled and Meinok fell over backwards as Reno dove. Meinok’s face went white. He looked at Reval. “You just orphaned my son.” The Romulan Captain’s face remained unchanged. “And one of your gas attacks killed mine. Call us even.” He turned away.

“Captain Jasar, Cmdr Suket is hailing us.” Comms spoke up.

-Matrix

Pretha took the distraction opportunity to move forward and pull her comm badge off and toss it so it landed close to the chemical canister as she called out to whoever would listen. “Beam that to a level 1 containment field in security! NOW!” If her voice carried, and anyone listened, the canister would phase out quickly and be out of harm’s reach… whoever’s that was.

Reno’s chest hit the floor as the bomb and Pretha’s combadge disappeared.

-Matrix

“Dang,” he said as he hit the deck and nothing was under him. Part of him was relieved, but part was just surprised that there was nothing there when he went down. Straightening his hat which had not fallen off in the dive he rolled to the side in case anyone happened to ‘give him the boot’. That appeared unlikely as they were arguing among themselves. Still, they had the Romulan ship to deal with.
- Reno

“Captain,” she turned to her own CO, “I think in light of this, we need to make sure this man is taken back to answer for the crime of attempted murder and attempted destruction of Federation property.” While she spoke, her voice lilted just enough she hoped he would get the hint that he should make it a priority to keep the man aboard and away from the ones who wanted him. And in stating the murder and destruction options, it also gave him a legit reason to not turn the man over. After all, he was now a Federation prisoner.... Right?

She had no idea Odinson was on the comms.

Pretha
CoS

“Take him into custody Lt.” Jasar said, moving back towards the center of the bridge.

The XO had finally made it to the Ready Room and had been monitoring the situation for the past few minutes.

As the weapon disappeared, D’vash stepped onto the bridge and motioned to the Ops officer to cut the transmission. He moved to Jasar quickly and with purpose.

“I apologize for stepping on your toes, Captain, but we’ve that weapon in a containment field below decks. If Suket wants that thing so bad, lets give it to her.”

He lowered his voice and continued. “We beam it to her ship, rigged to explode as soon as it solidifies in the transporter. We can get rid of Suket, her ship, and deal a blow to the Tal’Shiar all at one. The Romulans would be stupid to acknowledge or blame us for anything, we have records that she crossed into Federation space without provocation. . . “

Odinson (XO)

“Make the preperations, but wait for my signal. It may be subtle.” He whispered back before turning towards the view screen.

The XO nodded almost imperceptibly and made his way to one of the Ops consoles.

“Put the commander on.” He ordered.

-CO

=/\=I don’t take kindly to waiting, Captain. Your time has expired. Are you going to hand Meinok over? Or am I taking him?=/\= She raised her hand as if ready to give a command to open fire.

-Matrix

Reno scampered back to his seat when the screen came up. He quickly scanned to see that the shields were up at max. With a deft motion on the display the Texan strove to boost power to the shields. They were bigger than the Romulan ship and had more power and firepower available. Perhaps this was calling the bluff between the proverbial wolf and horned toad.
- Reno

Shields went up to full capacity and phasers charged. There was a full compliment of torpedoes. The Romulan ship powered up shields and disruptors.

=/\=Captain. I see you have raised shields and brought power to weapons. I will take this as your answer.=/\= The channel closed. Suket’s ship manoeuvred in a preemptive evasive pattern. She fired on the Olympic. The ship rocked. Shields were down to 90%.

-Matrix

Hamilcar swore under his breath. He was very disappointed in this development, but he did his best to keep his calm demeanor. He did what he could to keep his balance as he returned to the captains chair.

D’vash grabbed the console to keep his balance. “So much for that plan.”

Pretha had gladly taken the prisoner into custody and was at the bridge lift awaiting his escorts to the brig when the ship was hit and rocked on its axis. She growled slightly, managing to keep both her and her charge upright.

As the lift opened, she handed the madman to two NEs. “Take him to the brig. Maximum security. Oscillating field around his cell. I don’t want him beamed out.” She made sure they had the man well in hand before turning back to the bridge. She glanced at everyone in turn, making sure everything was ok. But it was the CO and XO that her gaze lingered on the most. She wasn’t sure what she’d walked into, but it occurred to her she still had to report about the cargo bay discovery.

“Sir,” she spoke up the next time D’Vash met her eyes, “you should know what’s happened in the cargo bay.” She waited to see if he wanted it in private, or here.

Pretha
CoS

“Give me some good news, Pretha.”

Odinson (XO)

“Helm, Full impluse. Lock Phasers and return fire. Bring us behind that warbird.” Hamilcar ordered, sitting down and looking at the tactical display on his console.

-CO

The Olympic came around and was briefly behind the warbird. Phaser fire damaged but did not drop their shields. Suket came to a halt and used thrusters to quickly turn around. She had decided to play chicken. All while firing weapons. Shields were at 77%. As sparks came down from the ceiling, one thing was clear. This ship was custom for a madwoman. A madwoman with no limits.

-Matrix

Reno held on. What more could he do? Well, he could white knuckle the console, but, oh, wait, he was doing that. Shields were up. Power was diverted to them. Essential systems were still online. “Diverting power to forward shields,” Reno called out. There could only be so much power that is put through there so what he did was going to be nominal, but still, nominal shields are better than no shields. He didn’t have to say it but he did anyway, “Forward phasers and torpedoes still in good shape.”
- Reno

=Proximity Alert, large object within 10,000 kilometres.= The warbird wasn’t stopping. A torpedo missed the Olympic by a shred.

-Matrix

Reno froze. His mind had gone blank. A collision course? That was insane! Were they going to try to shoot them up? What could ..

.. the console beeped. A message from Sural. He spoke it as he read it .. “I have forward tractors as a repulsor. Could bump her aside …” that was nuts! He didn’t say it but thought that was simply crazy of an idea. Idly he wondered if Sural was part Texan for coming up with such an idea …
- Reno, Eng

“Do it.” Hamilcar ordered.

The reverse tractor beam deflected the warbird starboard, but the ships still scraped together. A hull breach was forming on deck 3, the starboard nacelle pylon was damaged, and shields were down to 34%. The warbird was in equal or worse condition.

Hamilcar managed to stay in his chair when the ships collided.

A Starfleet signature emerged from warp. =/\=Romulan vessel. This is Captain Christopher Drake of the USS Triton. You are hereby ordered to leave Federation space immediately.=/\= The Sovereign class vessel opened fire. Suket’s ship turned for the Neutral Zone. “Sir… The Triton is hailing us.” The bridge looked like it had been through everything it had been through.

-Matrix

“Open a channel.” Hamilcar said, standing up and moving towards the view screen.

-CO

The cargo bay forgotten, Pretha stood by, not caring if she was seen on the viewer. Reinforcements had arrived, but it still galled her they had been needed.
She’d interview the prisoner later. But for now, the CO and XO were her main concern.
She tried to catch D’Vash’s eye to be sure he was ok.
