Apart from the sounds of people at work, the bridge of the USS Olympic was quiet. She had seen her fill of excitement on the Romulan border, and the crew seemed ready for a quiet trip home.

Along their way, they passed an almost minute black hole. “Captain.” came a voice from ops. “I’m receiving some sort of signal. It’s a pattern. Three long bursts, three… dots, and then three more bursts. Over and over again. Sir, the truly impossible thing is where it’s coming from. Tracking the signal back leads to the centre of that black hole.”

Hamilcar looked up from a report that he was working on, an expression of deep thought on his face. “Three bursts, 3 dots and three bursts....where have I heard that before.” He stood up and walked over towards the Ops console.

“All Stop, keep us outside the event horizon of the black hole.” He stood by the ops officer. “Full Scans.”

“Yes sir.” Initial scans showed a black hole in its infancy. Scanning deeper however, revealed a 6.5 by 3 metre metallic construct. And one life sign contained therein.

“Sir, that is from Earth naval history. Morse code,” Sathut spoke up. That kind of history - the history of communication - fascinated him. “Or it could be. Three dashes, S. Three dots, O. Three dashes, S again. S O S. I believe that was the ‘help me’ hail. Save our souls. Someone is in danger.”

Sathut, CNS

“Sir, cross reference with Starfleet database would suggest that the Counselor is correct, this is a distress call.” At that moment, the ship rocked. “Sir. We appear to be caught in a tractor beam. We’re not being pulled in, the pod is using us for leverage to exit.”

-Matrix

“Confirming strength of the beam,” Sural said, moving into the conversation. While it was unlikely that the beam could damage a vessel the size of the Olympic, if it was a pinpoint tractor beam it could cause hull damage were it strong enough. “Assessing whether we can more easily pull the craft out with our tractor beam,” he continued, running a plot of beam strength alongside of determining any danger to the ship from the tractor beam. Personally he estimated that it would only be a 4.38% chance that the Olympic would sustain any damage. It was, however, prudent to check.
- Sural

Sural was correct. The tractor beam the pod was using was not powerful enough to pull the pod out of the black hole or damage the Olympic. If the Olympic we’re together assist, it was likely the pod could be removed from the black hole and brought to safe distance.

-Matrix

“Do what you can to assist them, Helm, stand by to to reverse engines to pull them out.”. Hamilcar ordered. =^=Sickbay, stand by for possible casualties=^=
