“Another life sign?” Sural inquired, peering into the viewing port. This appeared to be more intact than the other. “Reno, what is the pod’s status?” The last one required a near emergency opening. This one didn’t appear to be in the same critical state, however looks could be deceiving.

Peering inside the viewport Sural would see the face of a Terran male. His hair, graying and unkempt, seemed dirty and matted. He wore a matching full beard in the same condition. His face was bruised around both eyes. His nose had been broken several times. His lips cracked and raw.

Reno, scratching at an imaginary itch where there had been a bee sting on his chin, shook himself out of that reverie. “Right. Status.” His tricorder whirred as he moved it around the pod.
Sural and Reno

The pods’ status was simply, operational. Power levels indicated that it could maintain functionality for only a few more weeks at consumption.

Pretha bit back a growl as the pod appeared, having expected it to have already been there. As the Chief Engineer moved towards it to look inside, Pretha’s voice spoke her name in both warning and query. “Sural…?”

Her hand, resting on her phaser, was ready to leap forward and lock down the bay in two heartbeats. It did cross her mind the XO wasn’t here, and it was a relief. One less thing she had to worry about.

“Human by the look of him,” Sural replied. “It appears that he has undergone a battle prior to his coming to being in this pod and that being over an extended time.” He stepped back for her to have a look. As a security professional she would be more familiar with injuries from a fight or injuries from a ship board tragedy and a race to a pod. “Reno. Are you able to safely deactivate the cryo controls and bring him to consciousness?”
Sural

Pretha took a quick look then backed up as Sural asked about the deactivation of the cryo bed. “I think we may want to wait and do that in medical. We don’t know what stasis is doing for him. And I want to be sure it’s not a quarantine things, as well. This is too much of an ‘unknown’ for us to just crack open here.” She glanced at the others to see if they agreed. She was in charge of the safety of the ship and that meant even this stranger. If waking him up made his heart pump faster and made him bleed more, or strain his breathing, or anything else, she didn’t want to be the one responsible for it. And stars forbid there was something more serious on a contamination line!

CoS… and a bit paranoid

Mendez ignored the background noises of his coworkers in action as he worked on seeing what information he could pull from the pods consol.

“Is anyone from Medical expected to join us to assess our new .. guest?” Sural inquired. Pretha looked uneasy. Given the experience they had with the prior pod he could estimate that she was being cautious. That was understandable, however, logically, they should be pressing on. “I would suggest we expedite this, Lt. Logically given the unusual encounter we had and the nature of the .. communications .. I believe for the man’s safety and additional information that we may glean knowing sooner than later would benefit us all.”
- Sural

When no additional help from Medical seemed to be forthcoming, swiftly, Pretha had an idea. “Sural… How hard would it be to move them from this stasis to one of ours? If we can’t get this pod to medical, we need to get them into another one that CAN go to medical as soon as possible with as little interference to them as possible.” She wished, now, that she had paid more attention in some of the lesser classes she had taken. It seemed like such a dumb question coming from her lips, though it had seemed perfectly logical and probable in her head.

“There should be little issue with beaming this into Sickbay. Logically from there the medical staff would have sufficient expertise in extracting the man after any further examinations,” Sural replied. Beaming such things were hardly unprecedented. In this case there were no mechanical issues pressing. However, he would check.

“And if not, what’s the best and safest way to get them to medical. I doubt the Doc would recommend trying to revive them here.”

OOC: You know, bad things seem to happen when you come into the bay .. <G> starting to get a complex here ..

At this point, the tricorder Reno had pulled from the original pod awoke. The words ‘This one is mine.’ were on the screen. Reno would begin to feel strange, as though a second consciousness had entered his body.

Sural turned toward Reno. “Reno, can you confirm that this pod is safe to beam to Sickbay? Mechanically speaking such that the pod would engender no danger to the medical staff.” He paused. “Reno?”
- Sural

Mendez looked up from where he was working. “What’s going on?” he asked looking from Pretha, to Sural, to Reno and feeling an unsettling feeling was over him as he read the emotion on each of their faces.

Lt. (j.g.) Mendez, CSO

OOC: Not much emotion on Sural’s face <G>

Without response, Reno stepped forward and began opening the new pod.

“Reno, the inquiry was relating to transport safety ..” His voice trailed off as he witnessed the uncharacteristic actions of the Texan engineer.

The pod’s main screen monitoring the patient’s vitals started to flash red as Reno attempted to open the pod. Breaking the seal on the pod would hamper the controlled environment supporting the patient inside.

“Reno,” Sural continued, seeing the similar signs from the previously ‘controlled’ crewman. “It would be wise to wait for medical personnel before attempting this,” he continued, moving toward him. If Reno did not respond in ‘normal’ manner by that time he would attempt a Vulcan nerve pinch to disable him.
Sural

Reno was unresponsive and thus required a nerve pinch. Before he hit the deck, his eyes were briefly visible. They had turned completely black.

-Matrix

“Fascinating,” he simply said.

SURAL! Pretha’s mind screamed before her mouth managed to open. She had been heading towards the pod and Reno as Sural had. Just as the man fell, she caught the blackness in his eyes and her own widened. Sural’s hand was barely clear of the man’s shoulder and Pretha lunged to shove back the man back as quick as she could. “GET BACK!” She had seen the eyes and it unnerved her. Had her eyes turned that color when the entity was in her?

Reflexively he did step back, assisted in part by Pretha’s shove. Not expecting this the whole move from the two of them put her off balance even as Sural struggled to keep his own. He reached out vainly to catch her before she fell, however that was fruitless. She was past him before he could react. At least, he thought, Reno was better than a hard deck.

The shove, done over the collapsing body, put her off balance. She had to catch herself with a hand on the pod and one on Reno’s back to keep from falling completely over the prone man. A slight growl at her own incompetence fell from her lips as she tried to right herself. It had been impulsive, meant to protect the Vulcan from whatever was in Reno. But it hadn’t been thought thru completely.

=^= Sural to transporter room. Transport immediately the pod in my immediate vicinity to Sickbay. =^=

=^=Put it in a stasis field. That’s a security order!=^= Pretha added quickly. If the ‘thing’ was still floating around, she didn’t want it hitching a ride to medical and leaping into the Doc.

Shy of calling for ‘security’, given that security was present, Sural reached to assist Pretha back up. “I apologize if I was precipitant in incapacitating Reno and you did not have time to adjust.” He paused looking at Reno. “You saw his eyes?” As much as Sural was a Vulcan and his emotions were on a low simmer at best, he was ‘concerned’ for Reno. Picking up the tricorder that Reno had, the Vulcan examined it, reading what was on the screen. Did that refer to Reno or the previous occupant, or did it refer to the injured man in this new pod? The evidence was inconclusive.

Passing this to Pretha, he inquired. “What do you make of this?”
- Sural

Pretha stood up, making short work of it to remove her hands from the pod and the prone figure before them. “Yeah… I saw his eyes.” She glanced up at the other guard and frowned. She didn’t like an entity that could leap bodies. She hoped it would be contained in here if they stayed here. “We don’t know if this thing can move thru the ship so I don’t want anyone else to come or go from this room till we are cleared by myself and at least one other person. That way I can’t do it myself if I am occupied by it. And you can’t if you are.”

She glanced around the room and shook her head. “I don’t like being the mouse…” she murmured in a reference to a child’s game called cat n mouse. Not talking to anyone in particular, she shook her head, realizing it was silly, but she spoke out loud. “What do you want?” With any luck, it would take her over instead of the Vulcan.
She watched Sural for any change that may indicate his body was becoming the host.

The tricorder screen began flashing. The text had changed in response to Pretha’s question. It was a set of stellar coordinates.
