OOC: just letting you guys know that your characters will be given level 5

IC: As they walked down the initially somewhat cramped tunnel, it began to widen out and deepen on the left, developing into a deep gorge that went far below what anyone in the group’s darkvision could sense. On the right, the wall stretched further up until the ceiling was further than any of them could see. The ledge they walked on was about 30 ft wide. Gamwich and Ed plodded forward, the Halfling holding a faintly glowing blue lantern that periodically began to glow a little brighter.

After a while, Gamwich slowed down, his lantern’s glow brightening notably as he swung it towards a small gap in the wall, where there appeared to be a small cave. Within the cave was quite the sight. A veritable blanket of glowing mushrooms coated the floor of the cave, while a bunch of white threads hung from the ceiling, brushing against the glowing mushroooms.

Sathut surveyed the scene, then turned to his guests while Gamwich spoke. “These ‘ere are the mushrooms I come to harvest and bring back up to the surface. They sell well. Do you gents think you could harvest a few of them for me?”

Side-quest: mushroom harvest

Sathut, CNS

Suravil gazed around. It was quite beautiful. Not for the last time (he hoped) he marveled at the variety that nature provided for beings to admire. “Are there any particular varieties or .. colors .. that are more lucrative that you wish to harvest?” Not being one to have considered mushrooms beyond eating them with a meal - and those being a more mundane standard mushroom - he felt he had to ask that question.

He followed the bed of mushrooms with his lantern then, with the curiosity that came within him, brought the lantern light to bear on the filmy strings and traced a line from the mushrooms upward into the ceiling of the cavern.
- Suravil

Hood pulled back from his point position to glance into the cavern. “No offense, chief, but you’re paying us for guard duty, not to play mushroom farmer. If’s it all the same to to you, I’d prefer to keep an eye out for hostiles out here. we don’t need anyone sneaking up on us while we’re picking ‘shrooms.”

Hood (Protector)

“The quicker they are collected the quicker we are away from Underdark dangers,” Suravil said. While he agreed in principle with Hood it was not an issue to lend a hand. His favored area was not caves but the verdant forests and what lay within. He missed the wind on his face and the smells of what was above. Here the odors were tinged with what he would call ‘must’ and, as he looked at the mushroom field again - quite different. He ranged his lantern about again about and above them before glancing at their employer for his answer.
Suravil.

Garret let out a short bark of laughter. “Well, you wouldn’t be very good bodyguards if you let me go in there, I think. See those strings?” the programmed individual gestured to the white strands hanging down from the ceiling.

When Sural glanced up, he wouldn’t be able to clearly see what was up there, but there was definitely some sort of shapes lurking in the shadows.

Sathut stepped forward and looked up as well. “Cave Spiders of some sort.” he commented softly.

Sathut

Faaran had been focusing on the mushrooms, that he hadn’t noticed the strings until they had been pointed out to him. At the mention he glanced up his eyes tracking the strands up into the shadows. It took a moment for his eyes to adjust to something out of the lantern light, but as soon as his eyes adjusted to disern the shapes of some kind of creature his bow was at the ready, an arrow notched, but the bow string was left loose. He was ready to shoot at the Spiders, or whatever kind of critter they were, but he wasn’t going to without the signal.

Mendez aka Faaran

Suravil shifted his lantern to scan about. Dark shapes but so far nothing ‘bad’ had happened. He brought the lantern back down to survey the mushrooms. Then he shrugged. “I know of spiders in the wilderlands, the forests, though am not familiar with these. Perhaps if we split up - some on guard from them and some assisting in the collection of the mushrooms?” There was a second option - bringing the attack to the spiders. “Or set the webs aflame as we prepare our defense?”
- Suravil

Faaran shrugged bow still trained on the shadows, he didn’t what they did either way. But it was clear he would probably be more likely to defend than collect.

Faaran

Hood experienced an almost indiscernible shudder. I knew there was a reason I didn’t want to go in there.”

He looked into the back of the wagon and finding a small strip of canvas that was easily cut off. He wrapped the strip around a crossbow bolt and prepared to ignite the cloth. “You know, this is going to make a lot of smoke and if this is the only way out, we’ll have those big uglies joining us unless there’s a way to block the door.”

Hood

Gamwich returned to his cart and hunkered down.

Sathut watched the others act, not sure whether to help or let his guests figure it out on their own. The spiders didn’t seem to have noticed the group yet, which meant they had the element of surprise going for them.

Sathut, CNS

“Evidently we are not on their dinner plate yet for them to be interested in us.” His eyes trailed to the dangling web strings. Were they like forest spiders any touch to their ‘web’ would alert them to a possible catch. He stretched out his Elven senses to perceive how many spiders that there may be. “We may yet have an element of surprise to engage them. “Were they to come down on streamers of web to us I may cast a web under them on the floor to snare some.” The unspoken word there was that were they to climb down the walls on the side his plan would then be foiled, though he could still snare some against a wall.

OOC: Bump

OOC: just waiting for more than Sural to reply
- Miriam

“So, you want to stop the web-crawlers with a web? Won’t they be able to traverse your web just as well as their own? A web by any other name is still a web.”

“Either way, I’m keeping a lit torch handy, just in case.”

Hood

“It is a web in design only,” Suravil replied. “Spiders may be more skilled at traversing webs, though this is designed to stick or slow creatures, including spiders. Perhaps a web appearing would, in their limited intelligence, cause them to believe they are moving on safer ground and be more likely to simply drop into it.” He was more concerned with the potential of them traversing the walls. What ‘was’ their modus operendi in how they were comfortable and used to engaging prey?
- Suravil

“This particular strain of spider is one which, I believe, prefers to snare its prey in the floating tendrils of web you see before you,” ‘Sam’ volunteered the information, stepping forward to crouch beside Sural and D’Vash. “Then they pull the prey up towards them. I do not think they will use the walls to travel down, but if we can lure them down to the bottom via their strings, I think ‘Suravil’s plan is a reasonable one.”

Sathut

“There is a spell, very minor, a cantrip really,” explained Suravil, “which I have. It conjures a hand that I can manipulate things.” He put a finger up. “Minor things, though in this case I could manipulate the strings to imply that something is there. Once they approach, if they do, I can attempt to catch them in the web. The wall is nearby that I can attach the web to to be firmer.”
- Suravil

Hood stepped back out of the way to give Suravil any room he needed. “The stage is yours, oh wonderous wizard. Weave your spell.” He unknocked his crossbow and replaced the quarrel in his quiver. As he drew the ebony blade, he added, “I’m going to have a torch handy either way. . . “

Hood

Suravil looked at the others to ensure that they were ready as Hood was. He dismissed what he took as a somewhat mocking statement from Hood, however his focus right now was on where to cast the spell. He wanted to position himself in a place where this hand could tackle more than one thread, keeping them within 25 feet of his person. He only had a minute with the spell and he wanted to do as much as he could. First he looked for small objects, a few of them, that may be husks of mushrooms for example. It would not do for the hand to be stuck to a hanging tendril; he would use an object. The hand could pick up something that was a pound or two with no issue. Additionally he prepared for the Web spell that may come shortly thereafter.

Thus prepared he took his spot. The spell, simple as it was, had a verbal and somantic sense, and with practiced ease he cast the ‘Mage Hand’ spell. First actions would be, once the magical hand formed in the air would be to pick up one of the sticks/husks and brought it to the first tendril and used it to waggle the tendril back and forth before pulling back to see whether the stick/husk stuck to it or not. His eyes watched for activity above … and if he had time to go to another or if he needed to prepare the next spell.
