“You saying that tells me you aren’t into antiquing, young man. You asked me how much my entire shop collection cost and I told you the price,” said the old lady, “Are you just browsing or are you really looking to buying something?”

Reilly arched an eyebrow at the figure and chuckled. “For that amount, they better be really good pieces.” and he continued to look around. “What pieces aren’t worth much? One man’s trash, and all that…” he asked with another smile. “Unlike my employer, I tend to find beauty in the things most often overlooked.”

Reilly

“A 20th century walkman, non functional. A working Federation tricorder, circa 2261. A design schematic draft of the Freedom-class,” replied the old lady. The selection was… not unusual. A great deal of these pieces seemed like they could be available in a museum, at least from an initial glance.

20th Century… same as the car from the Captain’s shuttle.” Reilly thought to himself. “Worth a shot.” and he turned and looked at the woman. “A… walk-man, you say? What ever is that? May I see it, please?” he asked politely.

Reilly, XO

They walked over to the display. “It’s an audio device, as you can see from the ancient headset. The thing inside the walkman is called the tape, and it has a magnetic strip containing audio data, which if the device was fully functional, might be able to play back. However, the magnetic strip of audio data might have lost all magnetic properties due to age by now, so it’s questionable if there is any data remaining.”

GM

“By data you mean music right,” Lily asked. “Any idea what the songs were. Is there something written on the case,” she asked Reilly instantly curious.

Lily Locksley

“Music or vocal recording. Books narrated by a famous person, actor or actress was known to be also popular around that time, as well as things that people wanted to record,” replied the old lady, “Unfortunately, the label has long since worn off. The adhesive was not strong enough to last 500 years.”

GM

Mikel remain back. His goal was to keep the woman in a bargaining mode and now the others could work her however they pleased.

Reilly peered at it intently and then said “May I examine it more closely? And yes… I am quite aware of the ‘You break it, you buy it’ rule.” he said playfully.

Reilly, XO

“I am afraid, due to the age, exposure outside its vacuum container is ill-advised unless you intend to purchase it outright. Should you wish to examine it outside of its sealed preservation containment, you may do so after you purchase it,” replied the old lady.

Alita had walked over to examine the object.

“You know, I think that will look quite striking in the media room of the summer home. I think it’s a very good buy but is it the show stopper?” she asked slyly meeting the old woman’s eyes.

  • Alita, MO/COS

GM

Reilly grinned at Alita and said “Im looking for me, not for His Grace, at the moment.” He turned his gaze back on the device and paused for a moment. Without taking his eyes off of it, he said “Five bars. Will that secure an inspection? If I find it to be acceptable, another five. If not… you keep the first five.” and he looked at the old woman with a sense of material lust in his eyes.

Reilly

Alita wasn’t certain if Riley was playing an angle or being a jerk. It didn’t really matter though. Someone in her perceived position had to behave with tact.

“Well I am here on behalf of my employer and I am looking for that show stopping piece and, my dear lady, I have far more at my disposal than what’s in this trifling little bag I showed you.” she said quietly.

  • Alita, MO/COS

The old lady shrugged at Alita and then said, “All the pieces I own are on display, young lady. The prices are described at the center of the piece, and are non-negotiable.”

Alita nodded and smiled politely.

“Well then, I suppose I’ll keep looking.” she said moving off.

  • ALita, MO/COS

“The price of the item, is 25 bars. You may inspect it at 25 bars, young man,” replied the old lady, “If you keep trying to barter with me, it will be 50 bars. You do realize that I am a Federation citizen and while currency is not needed for a woman like me, it is needed for these rare antiques I carry. Such it is the facts for the antiques market. The fact you are trying to barter with me confirms my initial theory that you are not into antiquing. Now, either buy something, or get out of my shop.”

GM

Mikel watched the exchanges with bemusement. He thought the old lady was poor at her profession and these idiots even worse. He suspected this old lady was more than she pretended to be but honestly he was not interested. He was more than happy to leave as she asked. In fact he turned toward the door to see if she would even care.

Petrov CE

Despite being a shop owner, the old lady had no need to sell her pieces. She observed Petrov leaving but didn’t care to stop him.

GM

As he saw she made no move to stop him Petrov slowly turned around and looked at the shop lady.

“Why don’t we cut the pretending. Your no more the innocent hard nosed shop lady than I am a hard nosed bargain hunter. Whats your game and please leave off with the act. I’m done with it?” Mikel said deciding to test his hypothesis. He also did not care if he blew his cover or not but just in case left that a little vague.

Lily watched as all of them bartered and bickered. She had been raised in a technological dead zone where her parents did everything without currency unless they had to. When the people of her childhood commune needed something, they simply sold products they made. There was still an industry for authentic handmade items and foods so it paid the bills when it was necessary. The key was always what was necessary and what wasn’t. The commune had the belief that as long as you had food on the table and clothes on your back you had more than enough. While currency at times was the root of all evils, Lily had learned it did solve a lot of problems. Lucky for her, Lily’s fiance was loaded. Calculating the cost the woman was asking, she realized it was just short of 5,000 credits. To speed this process up, she decided to finally pipe in. “If they aren’t going to buy it then I will for twenty-seven bars of bars,” Lily stated confidently. “You wanted twenty-five but I will throw in two more to pay for your frustration. They can’t seem to make up their mind but I think it is a cool piece even if it doesn’t work.” Lily had no idea how much was in the joint house account Duncan had set up but it had to have at least that much or at least she hoped so. Looking at the woman, Lily hoped she agreed. She had no idea why they were so interested in this piece but she was only medical. Unless it sucked the life out of someone or was slathered in a contact poison, all she cared about was getting it if the XO and COS wanted it.

Lily.

OCC: I googled how much what is the value of a bar of gold pressed latinum worth and one site came up with $187 dollars. If I am wrong or if this is not correct I will absolutely change my posts to reflect what the GM had in mind. Just let me know if I need to change something. If the post is not going to work even with a dollar equivalent that is okay too. I just thought I would take a chance. ~ Kate

OOC: Well, Federation credits don’t work the same way but let’s just assume somehow the away team can come up with 27 bars of gold pressed latinum (GPL) but not on hand.

OCC: Sure thing :)

IC:

“I accept payment only upfront, miss. If you do not have the money now, you may return later. Now, if you do not have anything to purchase, please, leave an old lady the luxury to return to relaxing in this nice Risan weather,” replied the lady.

GM

“Well I am not hauling a suitcase around with that many bars,” Lily laughed. The idea was funny where she thought about it. How would one cart about 27 bars or currency without a suitcase or something. “If we return later to buy it can you hold it for me and not promise to sell it?” If the XO wanted it that bad putting it on hold might buy them some time. It would also allow for Lily to see if Duncan even had that kind of money lying about. What would be worse than not having them hold it was Lily getting declined at the register.

Lily Locksley.

“It’s first come, first serve, young lady. But I do not get a lot of customers, so it might be here when you return, it might not,” replied the lady, “That is the best I can do.”

GM

“I appreciate anything you can do,” Lily said with a smile taking a step back as the XO approached.

Lily

Reilly chuckled. “And a good business practice that is, my esteemed proprietor.” He reached into his pack and pulled out five bars of GPL. “Would you take a deposit? Non-refundable if we do not return to claim the piece by end of day?” and he held out his hand to the woman to shake before handing her the currency.

Reilly, XO

By this time Mikel had actually stepped out of the building and began to meander around.

Petrov CE

With the sudden switching of XO’s and his continued disconnect with the ship he was starting to wonder if this might be the right time to get off the ship. However his new JO did offer a glimpse of daylight that things could get better on the ship. Not that he would ever be happy unless he was a CE on a flagship or research station. He felt his day was coming.
