Entering his quarters after the staff briefing, Remy was frustrated by the events of the past few days. First, the shuttle trip to Risa was an attempt on his life. Next, was being shot at by automated security while trying to retrieve an artifact. . .
He grabbed a bottle of bourbon and slammed back a couple of long swallows before placing the bottle back on the counter. Now that that was out of the way, he filled a glass with his favorite liquor.
He was tempted to head back to the planet, incognito, to conduct his own investigation. To do things HIS way. Working alone had been his MO for longer than he cared to admit. But, that option was no longer feasible. Now, there was a responsibility to his ship and crew. They probably wouldn’t be too pleased with their CO if he took off. Having a missing Chief Engineer missing was enough of a problem he didn’t need to be part of the problem as well.
Still,sitting and waiting was frustrating. He needed a distraction. . . . .
It was a little while after the meeting and Alita’s thoughts were in a jumble. She knew what her responsibilities were to the ship and crew, she was certain she could carry them out, but didn’t like being kept completely in the dark. When Riley had got up and walked out she had half a mind to get up and walk after him to demand an explanation. He was arrogant, abrupt, but he got the job done.
Her jumbled thoughts had her wandering the ship and, before she knew it, she was ringing the Captain’s chime.
“Entrez,” replied Remy. As the door slid open and Alita appeared, he smiled, took her hand and led her to the couch. Before sitting himself, he poured 2 glasses of bourbon. Placing one in front of Alita, he sat next to her and took a large swallow from his glass. “If you’d radder no’ drink it raght now, do no’ worry, I’m ready to drink enough fo’ de bot’ of us.”
He ran a hand through his shaggy dark hair and turned to face Alita. “Why in de ‘ell would someone wan’ to kidnap my chief engineer?”
Alita knew she should probably abstain from the alcohol but Remy certainly wasn’t going to so, why should she?
Smiling, she picked the glass up and took a more modest drink than her Captain, friend, and so much more.
“I came here, ostensibly, to make certain you hadn’t gone down there to look for him yourself. When it comes to you, I don’t trust the ship to just tell me you’re still here.”
Remy’s frustration turned into a smirk. “You are gettine to know me better wit’ each passine moment, cher.”
Leaning back, she half closed her eyes for a few seconds before sitting up straight and becoming a bit more professional.
“I believe he was a target of opportunity. It could have been anyone in the landing party that was taken, it just happened to be him that walked out the door at that moment. It could have been Riley, myself, or our fine Doctor. Our Chief is just the most annoying.”
From what the others had stated, Alita was most likely correct. Petrov had wandered off by himself and had been the unfortunate one to get grabbed. “Dere are too many questions an’ no’ enough answers.”
“Are dese de same people dat sabotaged my shuttle? Dey could no’ kill me, so dey took one of my crew, is dat it? Is Petrov dead? We ‘ave no’ gotten any demands or e’en contact from de kidnappers. If Petrov is as annoyine to dem as ‘e is to us, why no’ give ‘im back already?”
He wrapped his arms around Alita and pulled her close. “Ow ‘bout you an’ I run away to some island paradise where we don’ ave to tink ‘bout anyting ‘cept drinkine rum an’ makine love on de beach ‘til de sun goes down and de sun comes back up again de nex’ day.”
Alita laughed and nuzzled Remy’s neck.
“As soon as we find Petrov, I promise I’ll take you up on it. I always keep my word, don’t you know that? Something our family’s very good at for many many years.”
Alita leaned back just enough to look Remy in the eyes.
“There will always be people on this ship who’ve known you longer and there will always be people in your life who swear they know you better… I don’t want to waste my breath arguing with all of them but, they will never know you quite the way I do. So if you’re going to go off and do something crazy one of these days, ten minutes or then years from now, I want to get in trouble with you, not clean up after you.”
She paused, slipped one arm free, and finished her drink.
“But damn, now we should really find that CE of yours.”
The door chimed at that exact instant. On the other side, Reilly stood with a look on his face few saw… he was pissed. Fortunately, there wasn’t anyone in the passageway to be the unwitting recipient of his anger.
Remy disentangled himself from Alita ad stood by the couch. Dis ‘ad better be impo’tent, he thought
Taking a step toward the door, he replied, “Entre.” Seeing the look at Reilly’s face, he immediately reached for another glass, filled it, and shoved in the XO’s hand. “I’m guessine you’ idea didno’ come to frui-SHON?”
Alita shifted her position and was able to muster proper decorum by the time she saw the look on Riley’s face.
‘Oh what fresh Hell is this?’ she thought and marveled at the fact that she was once again where she should be at just the right time.
- Alita, MO/COS
Reilly tossed the disk with the file he had been given on the Captain’s desk and then pounded the entire contents of the glass and motioned for another as he felt the slow burn take a bit of the edge off.
Remy looked at the disc, then back to Reilly for further explanation.
“Oh no… I got us some information. And Admiral Fredrick showed up in my quarters right after I started fishing.”
“She ‘as an annoyine ‘abit of doine dat,” Remy interjected.
“And then she told me that what I was looking at was useless, gave that -” and jerked his head at the disk, “- to me and then up and disappeared when my Intel contact called me back to tell me him and few others are suddenly having their security clearances audited and have been downgraded for some ‘unknown reason’. And quite frankly, Remy… if she and her shadow antique collectors can do all that inside of five minutes; then all of this running around and the associated jumping through hoops only served to get Petrov snagged. Fredrick told me the shop we were at didn’t have anything they were interested in. Would have been nice to know that before we went. Unless, of course, we were being used as bait… which means I will be even more pissed off than I am right now. I don’t mind being on the hook to attract the fish; but I damn sure want to know about it before I get eaten.”
Alita silently rose, took Riley’s glass, and poured him another generous helping as she listened in astonished horror then decided to pour more for herself and Remy as well.
Reilly took the glass and nodded his thanks. “This is feeling more and more like a setup… and not a good one. More like showing up for a blind date and finding out your date is a Naussican.”
Remy accepted the glass from Alita, but refrained from imbibing at the moment. “Or you’ sister. . .” he added while smirking in Alita’s drection. “Never min’. My gut tells me dat we are no’ beine set up. . . .mo’ like . . . tested. Dere are enough skeletons in de closets of dis ship dat Frederic could bring us down if she wanted to. Dat would be more in line wit’ 31’s MO. Dey already ‘ave a mad-on ‘bout me, ‘cuz I can bring dem down. I tink Frederic wants us ‘cuz we are willine to cross de line if needed.”
“An’ de fact dat an artifact was used on an attempt on my life, and now Petrov beine abducted by someone usine an artifact, ties us to ‘er and ‘er Warehouse. By de way, any more word on Petrov? An’ what is on de disc she gave you?”
Reilly shrugged. “Haven’t looked yet, Skipper. Figured I’d give you eyes-first so nothing gets filtered.” and he took a drink. “And yeah, she said as much… about being teste, that is. What is really confusing here, Skip, is that if we are being tested… then she knows how this ship operates. Why is she knocking d$%ks in the dirt for doing what it is we are usually doing? I mean hell… she probably brought more attention on her with that auditing stunt than if she had just let it go. Doesn’t makes sense… and it’s piss poor OpSec, if you ask me.”
Alita set her full glass down. Somehow the mention of sisters had sparked her interest. She hadn’t heard from her own sister, Olivia, since they parted ways three days before Alita joined the wolverine and Olivia joined a science vessel nut, at the moment it was more important to listen to these two men talk.
