Having arrived by shuttle in the middle of the night, Bryn decided to try and get a few hours sleep before reporting for her evaluations. The trip had taken a long time and she’d been stuck in the shuttle with her ‘husband’ the entire time. It was difficult to ignore someone when they were only a few feet away. Still, she’d managed it for the most part, spending time speaking with the pilot and listening to music through an earpiece.

That being said, she arrived in Sickbay for the obligatory physical with a strong cup of coffee in one hand. Her long hair was twisted into a braid that was wrapped at the base of her neck and her uniform was pristine.

Seeing a JO, Bryn approached. “Hello, I’m looking for the Chief. I need a boarding physical to be cleared for duty. Can you make that happen?”

—Shar, CNS

“Absolutely,” she said with a smile. “Take biobed number two over there and I will get Dr. Locksley.” Moving to an office in the back, a woman came out and followed the nurse over to where she had indicated the woman to sit.

“Hello,” she said. “I am Dr. Locksley. Welcome to the Wolverine. I heard you are here for your check in,” she replied opening up the PaDD.

The faintest of accents graced Bryn’s words. “Thank you, Doctor. Lt Bryn Shar, ship’s counselor. I arrived last night so my records should be on file by now.” She nodded towards the PaDD. It was doubtful that many on the Wolverine had ever met a Ferlan before, much less one who had been ‘joined’ with another, so she was prepared to answer any questions the woman might have concerning the Morda that lived within her.

“My last physical was fine so I expect this one to be also.” She held up the cup of coffee. “Aside from being slightly weary from the trip here, I feel very well.”

“Excellent,” Lily said with a smile. “That is exactly what we want to hear.” Opening up the PaDD with one hand, she began to look over the highlights of the woman’s chart. Lily could sit and review the chart but right now that seemed silly. She had Shar physically present to answer questions. Pulling out a tricorder, she began to scan the woman. “So you are a Ferlan,” she left the rest of the sentence open ended. “I will be honest you are the first Ferlan I have treated. I will of course brush up on your race but anything you feel important to share with me regarding you?”

Lily Locksley CMO

There was really only one important detail. “Not only am I Ferlan, I am personally bound to another…joined, if you will. My ‘husband’ is also on the Viking. We are connected by a creature called a Morda. Half lives in his body and half lives in mine, meaning we cannot be more than .621 kilometers distant from one another or we will become ill and eventually die.” It was a truth about her life now so her voice was rather matter of fact.

—Shar, CNS

Wow that is a new take on until death do you part, Lily thought listening to the woman speak. While Lily didn’t linger long on the cultural or social aspects of this knowledge she did think about the biological and practical aspects of this information. “Okay so I see why you brought two mugs of coffee,” she joked instantly realizing this check-in was probably going to take half her morning.

“I know you have gone over this a million times but humor me. So if you are only able to be separated by roughly half a kilometer that means you either can’t go on away missions or he has to go with you if you leave the ship on away missions.” The question was semi-rhetorical. Most bodies in orbit were far higher than half a kilometer from the surface of a planet. If Lily was understanding this correctly that meant Shar never left the ship or her husband had to be always in toe.

“Also what does your spouse do for a living?”

Lily Locksley CMO

“We met at Starfleet Academy in the Counseling program—so, he’s licensed to counsel also. And yes, if there is an away mission, we both have to go.” There was a slight distaste in her voice. “Ours is not a usual marriage. We were both tricked into it—at least that’s what I’ve been told many times. We were already joined by the Morda before we found out each other’s identity. We are not fond of each other but are forced to stay near one another or face the consequences.”

She looked at the doctor, ready to answer any more questions she might have.

“So what happens if one of you become sick or injured,” Lily looked at Shar with concern. The implications of having a shared parasite were obvious. What wasn’t was how Lily was supposed to treat them in a medical emergency. If one was mortally wounded that meant the other would probably suffer the same fate. Past the tragedy of losing two crew, Lily was thinking more in terms of palliative care for the other person. “I know this sounds rather morbid but if something terminal happened to one of you what are your thoughts about palliative care for the other one?”

Lily Locksley CMO

Bryn understood why she asked. “We share the same Morda so we have to stay within a certain distance of each other so it can sense its other half. If Sym, my partner, becomes ill from something normal like the flu or a cold, it won’t affect me. Its only if the Morda inside of him becomes ill or injured that I will also become afflicted as my half senses the deficiency. If one half of the Morda dies it almost always takes the host body along with a flood of enzymes. However, the partner to the deceased usually survives because the shut down of the surviving half is gradual. They would have some symptoms and not feel particularly well, but they usually make it.” Bryn hated everything about her entire situation with the marriage and the Morda, but it couldn’t be changed so it was useless frustration.
