The next stop on David’s list was Main Engineering, to talk to Lieutenant Johnson. He walked into the bustling engine room, his mind occupied with rehearsing what he might say and how he should act as an XO. After a bit of searching, David found the CE tucked away in a corner of the room. “Excuse me, Lieutenant Johnson,” he said, “do you have just a moment to chat?” His hands silently grabbed the bottom of his jacket, pulling it down and straightening it.

Steve was busy soldering some wires together with a wielding type mask on. He didn’t look at the person, only spoke. “Hey pal. Do you mind. Give me two minutes. I’m starting to think you don’t know anything about Engineering with your constant pestering.”

Finishing the work he smiled and stood up, lifting the visor to see and turned around. “Now that’s how you fix that!” Seeing who it was he lost his smile quickly. “Uh. Sorry sir. I thought you were NE Ensign Trenty again. I do have time to talk sir. Please follow me to my office.”
“Not a problem,” David laughed. “I came while you were working.” He followed behind Steve, posture relaxed but formal, and glanced about the room as he walked, getting his own assessment of how things seemed to be going before the meeting.
With that he showed him the way and once in the office he poured a cup of coffee for himself and held it up to see if the XO wanted one.

“Yes please,” David said, “with cream and sugar.” As he was handed the cup, he said, “I just came to check in on the engineering department, as part of making sure I’m up to speed as the first officer. How would you say your people are doing? Are there any issues I should be aware of?”

Bump!

Putting in the cream and sugar and handing him the cup and taking a seat of his own. “Welcome to my office sir! It’s bate at the moment. I’ve decided to get out in the field so to speak before decorating. Get a feel of the department and see where we stand and I stand. So what can I do for you?” He did before taking a soothing sip of rich, dark, liquid heaven.
