“I realize this is an unusual assignment for you Captain Talisse, but you are the one who is available at the moment.” He looked at the unhappy face of the woman across the desk. Perhaps unhappy wasn’t the right word…she looked angry. “It will be temporary, you have my word.” Admiral Soliz promised. “As soon as we find a replacement who is familiar with larger ships like the Chimera, you will be free to return to your usual duties.”

His final words had the desired effect. The muscles in Talisse’s face relaxed a bit. “I will hold you to that, Admiral. Being Re’mar, I have no desire to spend the next few years surrounded by a thousand people every day.” Soliz nodded. Re’mans were a solitary species for the most part, which made them ideal for assignments patrolling the outer edges of Federations space, or observing and monitoring the peoples and life forms of planets approaching warp capability.

Soliz stood and ambled over to the window. He hoped it would look natural, like he was curious about what was happening outside and not like he was trying to put distance between him and the woman. That was the truth though. The Admiral wasn’t taking any chances on her reaction to the next news—he wanted to be out of arms reach.

“Ahem…one more bit of information, Captain.”

Aurra, who thought the worst of their conversation already over with, stood to leave but turned back. “Yes, Sir?”

“There is a party tonight in the Grand Ball room. I am ordering you to attend it to meet your new crew and to show respect to other dignitaries who will be there.” As Aurra hissed her displeasure, the Admiral felt the hairs on the back of his neck rise.

“I don’t ‘do’ gatherings, Sir.” Everyone who knew anything about Re’mars understood that.

Soliz squared his shoulders. “Well, you will do this one. It’s important, Captain. Everything you need has been left in your room for you. The gala officially begins at 2000 hours. I’ll see you then and give you the final details of your assignment.”

Their eyes locked and neither wanted to back down, but Aurra was well versed in military politics. She blinked and gave him a nod. “Alright, Admiral. I’ll be there. Thank you for…taking care of everything.” In truth, she wouldn’t have had the patience or inclination to spend time choosing clothing and adornments for the function.

With a slight bow, Talisse turned and exited the Admiral’s office.

        • (Later that evening)

The party was in full swing when a very different looking Aurra Talisse walked in on the arm of a very attractive man.

OOC: Okay everyone, think about a splendid ball, music, drinks, dancing and conversation.

The doors whooshed open as Rear Admiral M’Ressa and Lieutenant Sheriye entered the Grand Ballroom. The Fleet Commander was attired in her full dress uniform and the younger Caitian Science Chief was clad in a traditional Caitian robe that was simplistic in its fold over and tied design. Both their back paws were unclad of boots, as they fit poorly on Caitian feet, but by that and their thick head of fur it was easy to see these two were related because of their distinctive black, gold and red fur. Both having similar streaks of coloring throughout as well.

Pausing just in the doorway to take in the elaborateness of the ballroom, M’Ressa nodded in satisfaction at her staff’s work as Sheriye murmured.”Wow, Admirral, you go all out.”
M’Ressa laughed at her grandkit’s comment as she looked for the esteemed guests that might be here already. Spying the new acting Captain, she headed over with a hold of Sheriye’s arm to pull her with her. She was well aware of her grandkit’s shyness but she would break her of it.

“Captain Talisse, I am Rear Admiral M’Ressa. I trust that Admiral Soliz has gotten you somewhat acclimated?” She asked as she approached with a nod of greeting to the new Captain.

Aurra was in mid swallow from the wine flute in her hand. Blue eyes took in the pips on the dress whites. “Fleet Captain,” she inclined her head in a subtle bow. “The conversation with Admiral Soliz was…quite a surprise. He is supposed to finalize my orders here, tonight.”

“Excellent, ” M’Ressa said with a nod of acknowledgement.

“This is my grandkit and a member of your new crew, your CSO Lieutenant Sheriye.” She added in introduction as she indicated Sheriye who was standing one step behind her. Her granddam had to turn to introduce her, one forepaw reaching back to pull her forward.

“Captain.” Sheriye said with a nod that was very reminiscent of her granddams. Obviously she was more effected by her granddam’s mannerisms then she probably realized.

Talisse looked the Caitian up and down, taking the measure of the science officer and doing nothing to hide her impressions. There was no welcoming smile, however, her lips puckered slightly as if she’d tasted something bitter. “You should know, Lt, I expect a good deal from my officers. How many other Caitians are on board the Chimera?”

Fleet Captain M’Ressa

Sheriye forced herself to stiffen her spine under that penetrating gaze, growing up with her granddam helped in that respect. She’d had lots of practise. “Aye, Captain. You will not be dissappointed. I am the only one, otherr then the Rearr Admirral, Captain.” She said glancing over at her granddam out of the corner of her eye.

The fun and games at the target range had finished sometime again. Refreshed and in his dress wear Lt.(J.G) Riloc entered the grand hall. Grand was about right it looked ostentatious drapes everywhere people looking all scrubbed up and fancy.

He helped himself to a flute of champagne as a tray whizzed past on the perfectly spaced finger tips of a Ferengi waiter. He took a sip, the bubbles tickled his lips. His Symbiote was pleased. He could feel her moving inside him. She was sending memories of parties she had attended as a child. This in turn made Devan smile.

It took him a few moments but he noticed the CSO talking to an admiral and a member of the command team. So he straightened his uniform and walked over.

“Sorry to interrupt. Devan Riloc, Security chief onboard the Chimera.” He offered a hand and tilt of the head. “Pleasure to meet you, Admiral and,” he looked at the other lady, “Captian? I do not believe we have met?”

Why couldn’t Soliz have left her a dress uniform instead of just a ‘dress’. Aurra felt out of place in the deeply hued, one shouldered, purple gown. Who would take her seriously in it? It was what a woman wore to seduce a man, not something you wore to take her place at the head of a new crew.

Ahhhh, another crewman. “I am Captain Aurra Tilisse, newly assigned to the Chimera for a short time.” She said it matter-of-factly—not unpleasantly, but it didn’t invite questions. The crew didn’t know, but friendliness wasn’t a common Re’mar trait. It took a lot of coaxing to win of them over, but those who had did say it was worth it.

“How is the ship? Are there currently any problems that you know of?”

As a waiter passed the group, she lifted another glass of champagne from his tray, looked at the handsome man at her side who had remained silent, handed him her empty and raised a brow. He immediately set off to get rid of it.

While the Captain’s attention turned to the COS, Sheriye noted her granddam eyeing the Captain’s companion curiously and she thought she’d been about to address him when the Captain handed him her empty and he disappeared swiftly. Wow, Sheriye thought privately, this woman would make a good Admiral herself. She had presence and didn’t even need to speak. She was certainly going to be interesting to work with. How would she and her granddam get along? Her granddam was just as powerful of a force. There could be sparks. Wow.

M’Ressa for her part appeared slightly amused and did not appear to be put out at the Captain’s shift in focus. She stood calmly gazing out over the arriving crew.

Aurra stared openly at Riloc, still waiting for an answer to her question. There were a lot of distractions around them as people arrived or mingled, but Re’mar’s were usually very focused. Even when her good looking escort returned and took his place beside her, Talisse’s gaze never waivered.

“I’m no engineer captain. All I can tell you is that she is big and that her brig is of a decent size. So any misbehaving drunken marines and officers can have a nice comfy sleep without to much worry about space.” He smiled

Aurra squinted her eyes a bit as she processed Riloc’s comment. “I understand who you are, Lt. I asked the question I meant to. As the security chief, you would know if there are any illegalities or problem crew on board and you can tell me if you have anyone in the brig and what they are being held for. When I asked how the ‘ship’ was, I meant it as all inclusive which would encompass the crew too.”

She gave him a moment by taking a sip from her glass. “Now, would you care to amend your answer?”

“Sincerest apologies Captian. I misunderstood the tone of the question. The ship and her crew are exceptional you’ll have no problems seeing the best of Starfleet here.”

The unnamed man at her side cleared his throat softly. Talisse looked over at him immediately and it appeared a silent conversation took place between them. When it was over with, she turned to Riloc once again. “Forgive my question. Apparently I’ve been rude…”

“Not really rude, Captain…” her partner voiced, “Just a little too demanding for these kinds of festivities.”

Aurra nodded slightly, accepting the explanation. “My people are not as socially rounded as some others. We spend a good deal of time with only our own company.”

“If you’ll excuse me Captain. I’d like to have a look around and make sure everything is going as planned by the security here at the station.”

M’Ressa looked at Captain Talisse with interest,”I must say, Captain that not much is known about your peoples. How did your people come to be allied with the Federation?” She asked curiously.

Rear Admiral M’Ressa

She watched the security officer walk away, wondering how many times she would misstate a thing in the coming days. As she made a mental note to be more explanatory if needed, Aurra turned to RA M’Ressa. “It’s a long story, Sir. Let me see if I can condense it. One of Star Fleet’s ships, the USS Tamarind, made an emergency landing on Re’mar. They had no idea the planet was inhabited because my people live beneath the surface in areas that scans can’t penetrate. We observed the crew and their efforts to fix the damaged pieces of the space craft for many days before deciding to make contact. Once we made ourselves known and invited them below, they let us help with the repairs. All of our technology was underground, but once they saw it, Captain Tollman told us about the United Federation of Planets and wondered if we’d like to make an application.

Aurra sipped more champagne. “We wished them well and they left. After doing some investigating of our own, we did make a petition and the rest is history. We have kept ourselves isolated by choice, but opinions have changed over the last eighty years and a few of us have ventured out to live among the stars. I believe there are seven of us in Star Fleet now.”

—aCO Talisse

“Fascinating,” Murmured M’Ressa. “That does seem to be a common story for many planets. How do you like Starfleet?” She asked curiously.

The couple stopped at the large doors of the ballroom. Eleanor smiled at the dashing pilot standing next to her. It would be their first time together attending a major event like this.

Malcolm gazed down with pride at the vision on his arm. It was only the second time in two years the Marine had worn the iconic Service Dress Blues. As a Command Gala, Major Malcolm Dawkins had the uniform perfect, from the row of six major medals to the polished Officer’s Saber on his left hip and patten leather saber belt. Looking down to meet beautiful eyes, Mal smiled and raised his right elbow slightly. “Here we go.” His voice smooth as silk.

With her auburn hair in an elaborate knot, and wearing a light, flowing, knee-high black dress, Carnegie took a deep breath as she placed her left hand on Malcolm’s offered arm. In her right, she held a small clutch, carrying both her glasses and the box for the contact lenses she was currently wearing.

Mal patted Ellie’s hand softly, momentarily speechless as he once more took in the young woman by his side. He was externally stone firm, but inside… Mal felt butterflies. The way she looked at him made him never want to look away from her gaze.

Turning to Malcolm, she smiled. “Shall we?” And she walked with him through the doors.

There was a near two second pause before Mal broke out of the daze he was in and with a glowing smile nodded in response. “I’d love to. I already have the most beautiful girl in the universe on my arm… so I can’t wait to show’er off!” His Southern accent soft but detectable. Together they stepped into the room.

The room was beautifully decorated. It reminded Eleanor of some events her parents had taken her as a child. After a quick scanning of the room, the Recon pilot’s trained eyes fell over a table on the far side, carrying all types of different small pastries. With an eager smile, Carnegie dragged Malcolm across the room with her, more focused on the food than on the people.

Seeing the tray at almost the same time as Ellie, Mal laughed as the pilot drug him toward the table. “A woman truly after my own heart!”

Simon walked into the area, not too keen on such events. Nevertheless, he had done his best to dress for the part. He wore a velveteen suit of a deep plum color. The shirt underneath was white but the tie, and matching pocket square, a softer shade of lavender. A small purple carnation stuck out of his lapel. His black hair had been slicked back and his face freshly shaven.

As he walked into the party, there were already quite a few officers present. Some of the whom he’d met already and others, mainly from the Marine corps, that he had not. Taking a moment to clear his thoughts and brace himself for the waves of emotion and thought all around him, Simon took a few steps into the crowd, giving nods to those who met his gaze. He didn’t want to interrupt any of the conversations going on, so he grabbed a glass of champagne from a waiter who was passing by and sipped it casually as he strolled through the crowd.

Sheriye was standing off to the side a bit now as her granddam, the Rear Admiral continued to stand with the new Captain, her eyes were caught by a striking red-headed Betazoid crossing the room. She studied his outfit as she wondered who he was, not having met him as of yet. He must be crew, he strode too confidently to only be an Ensign she mused to herself. She smiled slightly at him as their eyes met, not wanting to frighten him off with baring her teeth too much. That always did frighten humanoids she understood, due to their cultural norm with bared teeth usually meaning something aggressive. Mind you they smiled with bare teeth so she found this just a bit confusing.

Kate closed her eyes for a second before she tugged on her dress uniform and walked into the ballroom. It was definitely not her first time at these sorts of events, but this one of the few times where she wasn’t working. The crowds were not the problem, blending in and moving through them, all while keeping an eye on the principal, she could do that. It was the chit chat.

As she walked in she smiled as she grabbed an offered glass of champagne. One thing was for certain, if they thought you were not being entertained, someone would make it their mission to make sure you were entertained.

MCapt Hawkins - A CO Commander

Davon took a second glass of champagne and sipped away. This was the first time he had had the time to meet and talk to the senior staff. A good time to evaluate their characters.
