Laying in her rack in her small quarters, down in marine country, Kate was finishing up the duty roster for her company for the next morning. There were times she missed being just a part of a small fire team, there was a lot less paperwork then leading an entire company. But that was what the job required, and the paperwork wasn’t going to just do itself.

As she signed off on the next day rosters, and tucked the PADD away, the ship suddenly lurched to port. Throwing her out of her rack Kate tried to roll with the motion as she was thrown towards the wall. It only limited her impact somewhat.

When the ship finally stopped rocking, she pulled herself to her feet and hit the comm channel on her desk. =^= Hawkins to HQ. Anyone there? =^=

OOC: I can’t see a location for Marine HQ. If you are contacting the Bridge there is not signal from there. If you are contacting the other marine barracks communication works. In addition to the response below any of the marines in the barracks can respond as well.

OOC: HQ is on Deck 29, it’s hidden in the spec up in the marine detachment section. But since we can’t get to CIC, I’m gonna guess that we can’t hit the Marine HQ. So I’ll rephrase my post to make it work for what you’ve given me. :-)

IC:
All Kate got was static, that was not good. Whatever had happened to the ship has really shaken it up. Hopefully it wasn’t the start of something even worse.

Standing up she grabbed her BDU’s and pulled them on, wincing as her shoulders were a bit sore from where she had hit the floor.

=^= This is Hawkins to any marine. Does anyone read me? =^=

Elsa responded =^=Report Hawkins.=^=

=^= Still trying to figure out what happened Colonel. Can’t contact CIC though. =^=

There was a blast of static and what had to be a dozen pained cries. =^=I’ve got you Sir, Ma’am, =^= came the voice of one of her junior lieutenants. =^=Geezus, even in the emptiness of space, the damn Navy found something to hit.=^=

GM

=^= Easy marine. Just because they’ve beached the ship… =^= she said chuckling. =^= But for now, stow it. Get a count on who is still up and moving, I’m on my way down. And break out some of the ship to ship communicators, I’m not able to get through to anyone on intraship communications. Let’s see if we can power through what is disrupting communications. =^=

Walking over to the locker in her quarters, Kate placed her hand on the scanner before it opened. One of the perks of being the Company Commander meant she rated a small weapons locker in her own quarters. Pulling out her sidearm she slipped it into its holster before heading for the main barracks.

Elsamine touched her comm badge as she was thrown from her rack =^=Hawkins meet me in the corridor with a small unit.=^= SHe said as she grabbed her side arm and headed out of her quarters and met up with Hawkins “What the hell happened?” She asked as she came up with her weapon drawn.

MCO

“That’s what I’m hoping we can ascertain Colonel. So far I’ve only been able to get in contact with marines on this deck. I asked them to break out the ship to shore comm equipment. Comm’s are working in a limited range, so I’m hoping that we might be able to push through with a higher signal strength.”

The eager lieutenant, lets call him Beaver, jogged up to the two officers. He had a slung rifle along with the backpack sized comm unit. The light on his helmet and rifle were on strobbing alternately giving light but also being disturbingly intermittent. “Lieutenant Beaver reporting as ordered. ” He snapped off a half salute, “I have my squad securing (guarding) the hatches.” He looked at them as he followed the first rule of being a marine, treat everything like its an attack. “Interesting news, Montez and Sweat, were in the laundry room…” He made a hand gesture. “Well long story short, she has a broken pelvis, he has a broken… mmm… personal weapon. There are 27 other injuries and counting, but that was the interesting one.”

Lieutenant Beaver

“Good thinking Lieutenant. Tell Montez and Sweat that they are to report to Mast once this whole mess is figured out.” Kate would have to get to the bottom of that later.

The Lieutenant made a face, “I’d consider their injuries punishment enough, but Its not my call Sir, Ma’am.”

Kate grinned evilly, “ah but they can sweat it out in the meantime.”

“What’s wrong with your lights Lieutenant? I’m hoping that you haven’t been letting your equipment go in disrepair.” In reality though she was hoping that was the reason. Otherwise this was not going to be as simple as she thought.

MCapt Hawkins - A CO Commander

OOC: The strobe effect was from them bouncing in different directions… sorry for the confusion.

The Lieutenant looked down at his lights and secured them more tightly into position. He wasn’t going on parade, but if a Captain told him to jump he had to jump.

Lieutenant Beaver
GM

OOC: No worries. I thought it might be a power issue.
IC:
Kate nodded, “Always be prepared, as you never know when the details will come back to haunt you.”

Kate looked over at the Colonel for a second before turning back to Beaver, “Go round up the other squad and toon commanders, then check on your squad and make sure the deck is secure. Leave the comm pack though.” Kate held out her hand for the pack.

MCapt Hawkins - A CO Commander

“Aye, Sir, Ma’am” The lieutenant left the Comm back pack on the deck and hustled away. It would be a while before the lieutenant would report in, but in this case no news was good news.

GM

Taking the pack Kate opened the back panel and ran it through its usual startup sequence. She set the pack to one of the standard emergency frequencies, hopefully someone in CIC was listening. Because if comms weren’t working, it was possible that they had turned to focusing on something else. Turning the power of the unit up to max, she activated the comm channel.

=^= CIC this is Captain Hawkins. Do you copy? =^=

MCapt Hawkins - A CO Commander

The comm system did not normally link to the marine comm units., so it would take some re-setting and hoping, but in time. The marines would be able to raise the bridge.

GM

As the static came back form the channel, Kate adjusted the frequency. The system was designed to connect with the ships external comm system, over secured frequencies, so this was definitely stretching what it was normally capable of.

Slowly running through the frequencies Kate kept trying to reach CIC. Just about as she was going to change to the new frequency she got a response to her message.

Somewhere in the tweaking and resetting came … =^= CIC here. Good to hear from you Captain. Just getting established here. What is your status? Over. =^= His voice was clipped but there was an undertone of relief there.
- Jen, XO

Locking in the channel, Kate gave a silent cheer, they finally were making some progress.

=^= Good to hear from you CIC. My Company is a bit beat up, but just a few scrapes and bruises. Sitrep, you are the first communication we’ve had outside of this deck. We resorted to one of our shore to ship comm units. A Company is securing the deck and getting geared up. Over. =^=

MCapt Hawkins - A Co Commander

After some moments Jen Replied. =^= Very good. Have the company medics triage the troops. Break out combat kit. Radios. Weapons, if not already done. Those able and well enough to move reassemble into squads. A Company move up decks. B Company move down decks. You’ll run into a maze of forcefields. Lifts are down. Comms are down. Go deck by deck and secure the deck, enlist able bodied to assist, medics to set up localized infirmaries. And move on. Report each deck status. We’ve not heard from much of the Fleet and we’re as banged up as you so expect a lot of injuries as you go. And if you reach Flight before we get contact, I want birds in the air ASAP. Acknowledge orders, Captain. =^=
- Jen

=^= Roger that XO. A goes up, B goes down, break out the heavy weapons, and give the fly boys their wings. Recommend monitoring Marine Tac 2. We only have a limited number of the portable comm units, and will operate on that frequency for individual comms. Comm check is every 15 minutes. A Company over and out. =^=

Shutting off the comm unit Kate packed it up and slung it over her back.

“Colonel,” she said turning towards Georgio. “I’ll get A Company moving, as we have more ground to cover. If I may.”
