Katelyn remained surprisingly quiet as he worked, studying the movements of the tool as the practiced physician worked and nodding in response to his explanation. She filed away that she should probably have a turn with the device, having managed to mostly avoid encounters with Starfleet Medical following her second rescue from Romulan forces. Her smirk grew slightly dour at the memory and she physically shook her head to erase it from her active thoughts. The sly grin crossed her features once again as she crossed her arms once more. “Hmm, not my thing, ask a nurse,” she commented as she held out her hand for the device to return it to the proper location. “And really, not much of a squeaker either…”

Ryley glanced up briefly at her as he worked but said nothing until he was apparently nearly finished. “Nah nurses get to handsy…I’m not into that,” he said and tossed the now used device back to her. He glanced back to the readouts again and nodded to himself as they started to even out. There were a few more injuries and scars he should replace but they would wait till later. Instead he watched her intently for a few seconds, icy blue eyes considering her body language, her stance and the tone she used. “So…” he said eventually. “…you want to hop up onto this biobed and I’ll do your old injuries or can I shower first?”

Katelyn had shifted to move to toss the device on a nearby supply tray, but his words froze her in her movement for the smallest sliver of time before she recovered and completed her task. “Enjoy your shower, old man,” she responded, the snark sounding slightly more forced this time. “I’m just a comm call away if you can’t reach your back.” She fished in her jacket pocket for a moment and pulled out a Starfleet communicator badge. Staring at it for a moment, she contemplated tossing it to him, but decided that they didn’t both need to see how poor his hand-eye coordination had gotten and merely tossed it onto the biobed beside him. “I’d hand you some pips too, but I know you won’t wear those.”

It appeared he liked her reaction, it certainly seemed to amuse him. He raised his eyebrow at the old man quip and watched the comm badge bounce on to biobed before coming to a halt at his hand. The smirk was back. “No need, I’m sure you’ll remember who I am without them.” He snatched up the badge and got down from the bed careful not to put all his weight on his bad leg. “And for the record…I don’t need a tricorder to diagnose everything. Something you might want to keep in mind incase your avoidance strategies don’t work and you wonder why.” He liked off towards the medical facilities showering areas and called back over the blessedly empty sickbay “You wanted me fine, you got me. Just be careful that you’re not biting off more than you can chew Kiddo.”

A smart response about how he could address her as ma’am was at the tip of her tongue but she wasn’t fast enough as he continued with his warning. She was briefly speechless as she watched him hobble toward the showering facilities. Checking to make sure there was no one nearby, she called out, “but biting is how you get the squeaks.” As he disappeared from sight, she collapsed against the biobed, turning so that she could bend over it and place her head in her folded arms. Her body tremored in a giggle as she was reminded of Ryley’s words about such a position just a few moments ago before she closed her eyes for just a moment before heading to change back into her uniform. Her exhausted body had a better idea, though, and she quickly dozed off.
