Katelyn leaned back in her chair as she listened to M’Resh speak. She’d always found something soothing about the Caitian vocal pattern. Her dark eyes held steady as he filled her in and she nodded along with him, not quite agreeing with the self-deprecation, but showing her appreciation of his candor. “So why did you leave Starfleet, then?” she asked with interest.

“Well, that’s the thing isn’t it?” He said, still picking at the seam in his trousers. “It’s not a simple question, and it definitely has no simple answerr.” He smiled and looked back up at Jacobs. “I’m a stubborrn man, and Starrfleet and I had differrent ideas about how to best put my skills to use. I got myself prromoted out of science division and into command.” He looked away from Jacobs’s face, a touch of embarrassment flicking across his eyes. “I found a, shall we say unorrthodox, way to move back to sciences.” He chuckled, the memory of the event pushing all shame out of his mind. “A quick jab to my Captain’s jaw, and I was on a new ship worrking Stellarr Carrtogrraphy again.” He uncrossed his legs and leaned forward a bit. “It would have been fine, M’Rressa wasn’t happy, but I was all rright. Then we took on a Tellarrite scientist and his entourrage. We…did not get along. Therre werre a few incidents and I had rresigned beforre mission’s end.” He gestured around the office. “And now I’m back on a starrfleet ship.”

“Funny that,” Katelyn commented with a grin as she pondered M’resh’s story. “I can identify with the perils of command,” she added with a laugh. “I frequently miss flying these things instead of telling other people how to fly them.” For the briefest of moments, her eyes darkened with flashes of pain as she remembered the disastrous ends of her two previous commands. One might think it was a miracle that Starfleet had offered her another chance, but at the same time, they hadn’t handled themselves well when it came to retrieving one of their own from enemy hands. “I’ll tell you what, though,” she finally continued, raising one eyebrow. “If you punch anyone on my ship, I punch back.”

Raal held up his hands in a jokingly defensive gesture. “Underrstood, Captain.” He chuckled gamely. “My punching days are long overr.” He dropped his hands again where they slapped quietly against his knees. “Don’t get me wrrong. Middle age hasn’t tamed me completely. These days I prreferr wit to fists. If you forrgive the poorr rrhyme.” He leaned back in the chair a bit. “Speaking of yourr ship, I haven’t been brriefed on the study I’ll be advising on.” He furrowed his brow a little. “In fact, it’s been strrangely harrd to get any inforrmation about what I’m doing herre.” The corner of his mouth twitched up into a smirk. “What am I doing herre, Captain?”

-Raal M’Resh, Scientific Advisor

A wry smile graced her features as she remained silent for several seconds. Without making a sound, she reached into a desk drawer to her right and procured a small box from it. She placed it on the desk, closer to M’Resh than herself.

“Well, it seems that I’ve found myself in need of a Chief Science Officer,” Katelyn began, inky black eyes focusing in on the Caitian. “Frankly, I’ve been around the block a few times.” She paused to offer a slightly sardonic laugh. “I’m not too concerned with who Starfleet thinks should be on my crew. I’m concerned with building the best crew I can around me and you are who I want.” She punctuated her point by leaning forward, clasping her hands together and resting her weight on her forearms as she studied M’Resh. “It turns out Starfleet owes me and they’re happy to reinstate your commission at Lieutenant Commander.” She shifted her weight to one arm such that she could raise the other to gesture to the box between them. “What do you say?”
