After checking out her new quarters and dropping off her personal effects, Freja decided to cross off two birds with one stone and pop into sickbay to meet the Chief Medical Officer and get her boarding physical completed. Her grandfather had taught her from a young age that the one person on any ship that you did not want to see the wrong side of was the Chief Medical Officer and she took that advice to heart.

Stepping into sickbay, she glanced about for Doctor Ryley.

Sickbay was its usual tussle and bustle with odd injuries and illness here and there. However on one side of the bay a bearded man in black t-shirt and jeans seemed to be building a tower of tricorders while a young Caitian, no older than a teenager, who seemed to be holding her elbow at an odd angle watched on.

”You’re never going to reach thirty, ” she said at the man and resisted the urge to poke the black metal cane he had handed her into his attempt.

”Sure I won’t princess…” he said back his tone almost as growl like as hers. ”You woosing out on the bet? You know what the ferengi say a deals a deals a deal. I get to thirty you let me fix the arm.” he didn’t look up at her, just carefully, gently with both hands placed tricorder number twenty five on the pile and took his hands away.

”what happens if there’s an earthquake, ” he girl asked her tail twitching slightly,

”In space? We’d probably die because it means the ships crashed, duh.” he replied. And started to place tricorder number twenty six.

“Interesting display there,” Freja spoke up, curious as to how this came to be.

The young one looked up and her tail swished slightly. Slightly worriedly she looked back at the man who didn’t even stop his placement of their tricorder and when he was dine simply reached for twenty seven.

”Everything…” he said as he lowered it gingerly onto the pile. ”…and I do mean everything in this universe is about balance. The balance between eating one bowl of ice cream and the whole tub. The balance between telling your friend you love her hair and running your relationship by telling her it sucks. The balance between parents and kids, officers and their commanders. Don’t you agree skipper?”

“Indeed I do,” Freja nodded.

He took his hands away and gave Freja one quick glance as if making sure he was correct in who he thought he was addressing and then reached for number twenty eight. ”Trigris here lost a fight with balance in her gymnastics class earlier today didn’t you.” he continued his icy blue-eyed now trained back on the tricorders.

The girl gave a sheepish look at the captain and nodded. ”I landed wrong. My Dad’s gonna be so mad at me…its shamefull to not have landed on my feet…” she hung her head. Had her fur not covered her skin it was likely the would be flushed with the embarrassment.

Ryley meanwhile was placing tricorder twenty nine. ”And so, she won’t let anyone fix it and wants to go home. To Which I replied that no, we don’t let kids with a radial head subluxations just wander off. Especially when I can fix it in a matter of minutes and as I reminded her is a no no because she’s a minor and I don’t like great big fuzzballs in science blue yelling in my face. So....we made a bet. On balance.” he picked up recorder thirty and placed it delicately on top. The whole structure wobbled and tilted a second but then was fine.

Ryley stood back and admired his handiwork. ”If you’re here for a boarding physical you can either wait five minutes. He indicated the biobed to his right across from the girl. ”Or I can get one of the kids to attend you.”

“I can wait Doctor,” Freja replied, walking over to the empty biobed and hoisting herself onto it gracefully.

Meanwhile Ryley administered a hypo to his patient and set about fixing her elbow. It took all of ten minutes to realign it and After scanning again and another injection for the pain the greying older Doctor released the girl into the care of an NE Nurse who was explaining her follow up care as they walked away. Ryley turned to Freja then, pulling out his own battered, much Loved and modified tricorder from his pocket.

“So, Boarding physical?” He asked again and leaned on the biobed that the girl had just vacated.
