Avalise frowned. “What the…” she muttered. It didn’t seem like it had had a large affect, but it was more the why of it. “Computer, identify the recipient system on Mord’s ship of the power, and also indicate if any communications were transmitted and to where.” If it was all above board then the inquiry ended there. If not, well, things would get interesting.

Lt. (j.g) Rendana, COO

Aaron was making the rounds, so far it had been a pretty slow day, pretty much what he had been expecting from a posting on a Starbase. As the doors opened he heard the Chiefs question to the computer.

“Everything okay Lieutenant?”

LtCmdr Foley - XO

Oh no, things were about to get interesting. Very interesting. Mildly amusing perhaps.

The computer chimed back after a moment. “The vessel was not the destination of the power but the source. No communications were given however a message was received about that time. An encoded data packet from an unknown point of origin.”

Rendana frowned and looked at the XO. “I would have said yes, except I’m hunting down a large burst of power usage correlating with a communication. But-“she gestured to the console indicating the computer’s response-“clearly there’s something worth looking into.” She chewed on her lip for a moment. “The power pull that the data packet correlates to a Mr. Mord who docked his freighter a short while ago.”

Lt. (j.g) Rendana, COO

“Interesting. Some sort of burst transmission? How much data could be transmitted in that sort of burst? And how much do we know about this, Mr.... Mord did you say?” Aaron asked as he stepped around to look at the console. His specialty might have been stellar phenomena, but he had spent his own fair amount of time looking at radio signals trying to discern what was out in deep space.

For the pair the science was simple enough: A short radio burst or Fast radio burst transmission had been sent to Mord’s ship at about the same time as the power surge.

The whole event was a few milliseconds long if that, enough to set off alarms but nothing more than that, and something that would quickly fade. Some people would have written it off as a simple issue with old tech connecting with new shinny, but the problem was, this Fast radio burst happened to look like an encrypted message of some sort.

GM

“Encrypted? What could a merchant need an encrypted message for?” Avalise mused. “Let me see if I can trace the destination,” she said as she worked the console.

Lt. (j.g) Rendana, COO

“Lets see if we can see if there is anything remaining of the transmission that we can pull up,” Aaron said moving over towards another console and seeing if he could reconstruct any of the message, even if it was still encrypted.
