The cold, inky darkness of space filled the ceiling-high window in front of the Trill. The science officer’s temporary quarters were silent but for the gentle hum of the warp field, hurling the ship forward through the void. Whilst, admittedly, there were hundreds of stars to be seen, all but one of them were many lightyears away - an unfathomably large distance for any mortal being to comprehend in any real sense… And yet, with a flick of the wrist, the warp drive could have them there in hours, or even minutes. What truly magnificent feat of science and engineering, taken for granted by most who make use of interstellar travel in their day to day lives.
Breaking his mesmerisation for a moment, Swift picked up the PADD he had earlier placed on the coffee table near him. Tapping a few times, he brought up his transfer orders. “Relieved of duties aboard USS Venture. Transferred to Starbase Magellan. Assigned as Chief Science Officer. Arrival at 0845 hours for briefing and commencement of duties.” No rest but for the dead, it seemed, as he tucked the tablet under his arm; it was 0843, and the courier’s Vulcan captain seemed the type to keep to schedules rigorously. Grabbing his case and slinging it over his shoulder, the lieutenant commander made his way to the transporter room in a relaxed but hastened manner.
Arriving in the transporter room, Richard greeted the operations officer with a smile, stepping onto one of the large circles on the floor. Turning back to face the ensign at the console, the science officer gave a polite nod before giving the order, “Energise.” Disappearing in a shimmering cloud of particles, Swift thusly disembarked the courier vessel, whilst simultaneously embarking on a new journey - both metaphorically, and physically, as he reappeared in a similar blue haze on the Starbase’s transporter pad.
“Lieutenant Commander Richard Swift, Chief Science Officer, Incoming. Permission to come aboard?”
