TJ went and got himself a engineering kit. He’d pick up his own when he got back to quarters. He wanted to see how he’d work with her. So far, he had gotten along well. He hoped that continued. “I’m game for that. Should bring my own pack next time around.”

“Eh, you’ll get settled in wuick enough,” Rendana said simply with her own kit in hand. “So, Rivers, what’s your deal? Specialities? Interests? You know, the stuff I need t know?” the Haliian said as she led him through the monitoring centre.

It was obvious that she had yet to read his file. Then again, it looked like the ops department was busy. “Transferred from R&D. They like to get us out into the field. I’m very much a tinkerer.”he said. “I have a thing for restoring old earth automobiles. Keeps my hands from getting idle.”

She gave him an appraising glance”R&D huh? What’s your poison? Optronics… nanotech… shielding?” Rendana asked as she led him out the back door to the power core access area.

TJ wasn’t sure what his specialty was. He kinda liked to tinker in all sorts of different things. But, he always came back to making things move. “Propulsion. Like to make things move. Last time I was sent out on ship assignment I made an underwater lab.”

Rendana couldn’t help but chuckle a little. “Oh the irony of being here. But I will see that you get a chance to be on the Trinidad from time-to-time.”

Moving through another access point, this one required her to confirm her clearance. They passed through it easily and the COO led him to another door.

On the other side was a section of the immense power core that was thrumming with energy. Avalise broke into a reverent smile. “Take a good look, Rivers. Take a moment to appreciate the beauty of this thing that is the heart of the station. Between it and the bio-neural circuitry, we have a state of the art facility. But it doesn’t tend itself. It requires our vigilance and care.”

Lt. (j.g) Rendana, COO

TJ knew about most of the power core systems. He had a small part to play in the design of it. “I know. I broke that power exchanger during testing. Can’t overload that for too long. It goes off real good. Not that I would try to do that again”

“I sure hope so,” Rendana said dryly.

She turned to him and gazed intently. “I need you to stop and take a good look at it. This is not an R&D lab or a facility somewhere that is all nice and protected. There are up to twenty-seven hundred people on this base at any given time. In an emergency we can house up to ten thousand. This power core right here is what stands between all of us and death. I’m not saying that to be dramatic, but to remind you about our responsibility here. Your design background will have its uses, but I hope you’re prepared to roll up your selves and get your hands dirty. Because this is a big job for our team, and you’re now a part of it.”

Lt. (j.g) Rendana, COO

TJ wasn’t overly insulted. That was par for the course for the R&D department. “That’s why they send the R&D guys out here. It helps us design better. We get to see the how the parts are actually used. I happen to like getting dirty. That’s may explain my auto restoration thing.”
