“I sure hope so,” Rendana said dryly.

She turned to him and gazed intently. “I need you to stop and take a good look at it. This is not an R&D lab or a facility somewhere that is all nice and protected. There are up to twenty-seven hundred people on this base at any given time. In an emergency we can house up to ten thousand. This power core right here is what stands between all of us and death. I’m not saying that to be dramatic, but to remind you about our responsibility here. Your design background will have its uses, but I hope you’re prepared to roll up your selves and get your hands dirty. Because this is a big job for our team, and you’re now a part of it.”

TJ wasn’t overly insulted. That was par for the course for the R&D department. “That’s why they send the R&D guys out here. It helps us design better. We get to see the how the parts are actually used. I happen to like getting dirty. That’s may explain my auto restoration thing.”

“Well good,” she said simply before looking back at the power core. Everyone had their own reasons for picking their fields and specialities and she was no exception. But Avalise knew that even a specialist had to be well-rounded in other areas they may hardly ever need, but ultimately could make a big difference in their work quality.

“How’d you get into R&D?” Rendana asked.

That was a question that TJ always tried to avoid. It was long. It was complicated. Mostly it was past he wasn’t particularly proud of sharing or living. “How much time do you have? I have cole’s note version or the long, complex version.” He’d rather have the Cole’s notes version. It was easier to do and a lot less judgemental.
