Aroha sighed as she stared at the cells in the petri dish. Watching cells react with random chemical compounds wasn’t her idea of fun, but she had nothing else to do and it was ‘progressive science’ although what was progressive about waiting for the right cell to react with the right chemical at the right temperature, with the right measurements at the right time wasn’t she didn’t know. The results might be progressive, but that was provided she actually achieved results.

She fiddled a little more with the microscope focus, zooming in a little on one particular cell. Very, very carefully she got used the focus to direct her movement of the fine needle that she was aiming to inject into the cell. Lost in her focus she was completely zoned out to the rest of the world as the needle slowly shifted closer and closer to the cell wall.

Out of the corner of TeWhiti’s eye another Medical officer appeared and squinted looking at the sample over her shoulder. He waved his hand eagerly and then proceeded to lecture the ensign, even if she couldn’t hear it, on something or another.

So focused on her intent work, TeWhiti either didn’t notice or ignored the presence of another at her shoulder. It wasn’t until she’d pulled the needle from the cell that she suddenly froze and turned her head. “What are you on about?” she tilted her head to the side, “I missed it.”

The specter of the older man waved his hand and smiled before folding his hands behind his back and walking through the lab table and into the bulkhead before disappearing entirely.

“Hey!” she exclaimed, causing a few heads to turn her way. Realising she was calling out to someone that wasn’t there Aroha blinked, and rubbed her eyes wondering if she had been staring through the microscope for too long. She guestured vaguly at the samples in front of her until and shrugged apologetically at the other doctors and nurses she had disturbed, letting them make of her strange behaviour what they wanted to. Once their attention had reverted away from her she grabbed a medical tricorder and ducked around a corner to scan herself.

When TeWhiti scanned herself she was perfectly normal except for (What the GM assumes) is the racing heart rate and high blood pressure from the slight case of panic that set in.

Well it was reassuring to know that she wasn’t ill, Aroha thought to herself as she put the tricorder away. All her bio signs read normal… well as normal as could be expected after seeing a person walk through a table. More than a little perplexed she returned to the work she had been attempting before. In the time she had been distracted the cell had already reacted to the chemicals she had introduced to it. She lowered her head back to the microscope so she could record the results. Perhaps it had all been a figmant of her imagination from looking at cells for so long.

TeWhiti next felt oddly cold, and the PaDD on the research bench next to her started to clatter on the surface then was suddenly over with. Almost as if the Magellan was struck by a blast of some sort that was intense but otherwise quickly faded away.
