Chandel sat her desk in her office which she finally had decorated to her liking and typed in a general notice to all crew on the base.

To: All Crew
Re: Yearly Psychiatric check ups

Please note that all crew yearly psychiatric check ups are now due. Please contact my office and schedule an appointment at your convenience.

Thank you

From: Counselor Chandel

Briony saw the message immediately but could not respond for several hours due to other more pressing concerns. When she finally sat down to reply, she took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Quiet time was so rare on a Starbase. She sent a quick reply and then got back to work.

Thank you for the reminder Counselor Chandel. I will be available at your first appointment tomorrow.

Briony

It had been her day off, but such was the life she led. Even her days off were not always a day off. If she happened to go for time on the Promenade or Observation Deck, she was inevitably approached by someone who wanted to discuss something they deemed important. Or they just wanted to connect with her and get reassurance. She couldn’t blame them.

The next day, she arrived two minutes early to her appointment and chimed in. She was not wearing her uniform though. Since it was her day off, she chose to dress in her favorite white blouse with dark red collar and french cuffs and the matching comm badge cufflinks tucked into a pair of dark red slacks. Her comm badge, which she was never without, sat pinned at her waist. Comfortable wedge boots kept her feet warm and added to her height. Her hair was down, a mass of dark brown waves.

“Come.” Came the call from within and the doors whooshed open. “Ah Captain, I must say you are a refreshing change from my last Captain. It was like pulling hen’s teeth to get him in a session. I had to be devious to catch him.” Chandel said with a smile as she rose from her desk and walked around to the front of it.
“Please, come in.” She said as she held out her hand to indicate the autumn colored sitting area that was a few steps down and to the side of her desk area. Lush carpet covered the decking and the couch and chairs in the sitting area were plush and comfortable. “Can I get you something to drink?”

Counselor Chandel

“It sounds as if you enjoyed the challenge to some degree so it cant have been all bad. I personally never see a reason to avoid these routine sessions. It is your job and why would I, as Captain and the role model for the rest of my crew, avoid it? Besides you never know what you could learn.” She entered the office and moved to the sitting area as indicated. Her footsteps were nearly silent and she felt the warmth of the space. “Yes. A simple Raktijino straight will do me fine Counselor. Thank you.”

Chandel’s dark brow rose at the Captain’s response, fascinating woman. She moved over to the replicator and ordered the Raktijino and a flavored coffee for herself.
She stepped down into the sitting area carefully and handed the Captain her beverage.

Briony seemed at complete ease in the presence of the Counselor. She was confident, comfortable and sat without much preamble. There was an officious briskness to her, but otherwise, she seemed rather normal. “Have you been settling in well?”

Chandel set her own cup down on the edge of the garden sand table which served as a coffee table. It had a wide edge that allowed things to be placed safely on it. Smoothing the back of her long orange caftan, the beautifully ebony dark Counselor took her own seat in one of the plush chairs. She laughed lightly at the Captain’s question, “Well, I would say that I have not had a lot of time yet to fully settle in and unpack,” Her elegant hand waved to a few crates that sat along the back wall. “But I have certainly managed to meet the crew and see them in action right from the start. It will be interesting meeting each one and getting to know them.”

Briony nodded, taking the Raktijino and sipping it. The drink remained in her hand, as it often did whenever she was not busy using her hands. Since childhood, the Klingon beverage had been a staple for her, though when younger, her mother had diluted it quite a bit for her feisty daughter. “We do have an interesting menagerie here not even counting our civilian population.”

“I have heard that you are being transferred, Captain. This seems rather sudden.” Chandel said as she picked up her coffee and sipped from it as her dark eyes remained on the Captain.

Counselor Chandel

“I do not always have the luxury of knowing where or when I am changing duties to suit Star Fleet. I will miss this place though. I think they feel they need more of a diplomat than I am? Speculation of course… They have not told me why I am being transferred or even where to. I will be returning to Earth for a short leave with my mother and then, ” She shrugged and looked strangely content. “Off to the cosmos somewhere.”

“I imagine you will find the new Captain as good a fit… if not better, for the job than I.”

Briony, CO

“I have to disagree, Captain. I have found you a very apt Commander during this crisis. You are clear headed and decisive.” She sipped her coffee before asking.”How long have you commanded the base?”

Counselor Chandel

“I appreciate your assessment Counselor. I should hope that all Captains are clear headed and decisive.” She said though the grim smile she gave the counselor acknowledged that she knew not all captains were equal. There were many that were considered hot headed or some that were irresolute in the face of demanding decisions.

She thought back, noting her time and sipped her Raktijino before answering. “Two years, 3 months, 14 days and about 6 hours. Take away the six if you do not count my first few hours wandering the starbase as a lowly civilian in order to get a better idea of what I was walking into. Honestly, I think they needed me to come in here with all the new supplies and personnel in order to clean, rebuild and reset the place for whomever shall be coming next. When I arrived, it was not close to the shape it is in now… certainly not as clean.”
