Nevin entered the shuttlebay and headed for the shuttle that was already being prepped for they’re mission.

“We ready?” he asked those already present when he entered the cockpit.

Already strapped into the pilot’s seat, Kara Nakuto was in the process of completing her pre-flight checklist. She had full confidence that the Viking’s brilliant engineering team had already prepped the shuttle to perfection, but for her the formality served as an essential distraction from the trepidation churning tumultuously in the pit of her stomach.

Barely more than a year ago she had been in this same position, Naglfar packed to the seams with her brightest and best people as she plummeted them keenly towards the land of the pyramids. In those early days hope had been easier to come by, the superficial facade of the power that Starfleet could wield through them a false beacon against the dark. But their optimism had been crushed like paper at the climax of a mission that saw her in danger of destroying her entire crew and ultimately leaving a man behind.

It was a vastly different Nakuto who now sat at the controls of the Naglfar. Not only changed in rank and position but also in every facet that could be observed to make up a sentient being. Gone was the hope for a successful mission, the belief that, by staying true to their orders they could not fail to win, the idea that through all of them, the Federation offered a grand and noble good for the benefit of the entire universe. And in its place only a singular, obsessive thought - that whatever happened here, she would never again leave a man behind.

Checks completed, the half-Klingon jabbed at a button and the shuttle purred steadily to life, the vibration of energised plasma pulsing through its conduits like the blood in her own veins offering a measure of calm.

…that calm was shattered at the sound of a familiar voice. Akorem Nevin. Barely succeeding in swallowing the primal sigh that swelled within her chest, Kara spun her seat in a smooth half-circle to meet her First Officer.

“Commander Akorem,” she acknowledged him with all of the faux-pleasantry she could muster which, while sufficient to not provoke a conflict, would in no measure leave the Bajoran feeling warm and fuzzy. “I did not expect you to be joining us.”

Kara Nakuto (engineer and pilot)

“Wel I am here,” Nevin replied. Nevin had never felt eager to be part of an away mission since Antos’ birth. The risk grated against his paternal instincts. That said, he was ever the professional and had always put his personal feelings aside. This mission was different. For some unknown reason he wanted to go and get on with it without giving a thought to his son…
