Kalika looked at him and shook her head, “Why are you doing this? I may be a strong leader, in your eyes, but why help me? We’ve had other Klingons on ship and they always said anyone who let’s this ship control them deserves it. It means their minds are weak.”

She slid slowly from his grip and leaned back on the locker. “Some DH check in you’re getting, huh?” His comment about overcoming the computer made her eyes widen. “Don’t fight the computer, Tath! Please! People disappear too easily. Just ignore it, if you can. But don’t fight it.” There was serious fear on her face as she set her hand on his chest for emphasis.”

He put his hand over hers. “Kal, you worry too much.” He told her, noting the fear in her eyes. “We will be fine. Trust in yourself, and trust in me. I know you assigned me to work beside you so that you could keep an eye on me from seeking honor for my house, but because of the ship, this has grown into more than that. I have accepted that. The ship will lose it’s power over you if you stop giving in to the guilt, stop blaming yourself for what happened and the computer has to give up. If you move on, the computer will have to find something else to torture you about, and it probably will. I think you have been punished enough for what happened and you should be free of it, and I want to help you.” He placed his hand on her cheek and guided her to face to let her look into his eyes, “Kal, I said I would have your back while on duty, I want to protect you even when we are off duty.”

As he spoke of her ignoring the computer as she’d told him to do, it struck her as something that hadn’t crossed her mind. Seeing ghosts and hearing the accusations was something she’d come to accept as something she’d deal with as long as she was here. “It’s not that simple,” she heard herself confessing. Oddly, as she said it, she remembered others on the ship saying just that to her in conversations shared in common areas. Everyone on the ship was being haunted in one way or another. Some worse than her, some without the intensity. But everyone in the Viking’s shell was being bombarded in one way, or another, by the sins and mistakes of their past.

But then his confession of wanting to take care of her off duty hit her ears. “Off duty, too? Sounds like a full time job. You need to see to your own sanity as well, Tath. This ship takes everything you have, and twists it. If you spend all your time seeing to ‘my’ well being, when will you take care of you? You deserve a life, even on this floating nightmare.”

It didn’t occur to her that he was interested in her. After all, no one except the Captain had even hinted at offering her comfort if she wanted it, much less anything else.

“That’s not what I mean, Kal.” He said, and he knew she would try to blame her pheramones, but he knew how he felt, he knew his emotions were in check. He still had his hand on her cheek, he leaned in and kissed her.

She had expected a lot of things; perhaps a pat on her shoulder that he’d watch her back, perhaps even a promise that he’d look after himself just fine. But she had never expected a kiss.

His lips pressed to her with a pressure that left no question to his desire to look after her not just at work, but afterwards. Being Klingon, it was also strong enough to elicit a soft gasp from her as her hand, originally pressed to his chest to push him away, became a grip on his shirt to keep her balance.

When he finally broke the kiss, she was left panting. With her mind wondering at what point her body had decided for her, she looked up at him and the fear was fading. “Are you sure…” was all she could think to say, grateful she was still leaning on the locker. It had to be the chemical reaction… Didn’t it?

“I’m sure, Kal. I like you, and it is not the pheramones effecting that.” he said, then kissed her the same way again to make sure she knew he was serious. “Maybe we could go to one of our quarters that has a working food replicator.” He smiled as he said that.

She about to protest that he couldn’t be sure, but his kiss Drew the thought from her as well as her breath again. When he suggested food, she nodded. “Probably a good idea. It’s past dinner.” She had drawn out the rounds the whole shift. Shortly the second shift would be finishing their first rounds and making their entries to the computers upstairs in the security office. Kalika had first been in charge of the brig, before becoming CoS and merely remained after getting the promotion. No one else came down here unless necessary.

“We can use mine…” She smiled, catching her breath before standing up. “It’s one of the few things I’ve managed to get working and keep that way.” She managed a smile but it it was taking all her concentration not to get lost in the moment and ‘leak’ more than she already had. The walk her room would tell if it was lingering affects or his true feelings. She had chosen her in quarters because if it WAS the overtones, he could simply excuse himself after escorting her there and leave. It would be less awkward. And hopefully less painful.

They walked to her quarters, and he helped her sit down once they were inside. “What would you like to drink, Kal?” He asked, ready to put orders into the machine.

The control it took had taken more of a toll than she thought, realizing she hasn’t even remembered going back to her quarters. She took a breath and stood up moving towards a small cabinet beside the door. Tapping open the panel, it slid aside to reveal a place for her phaser. “Whatever you are. The replicator does everything but a decent Andorian Ale.” She laughed softly as she removed the weapon from her hip and sealed the panel shut once more.

Moving over to sit on the edge of the table, she glanced to her bedroom where the darkness keep her from seeing anything in there. Blinking, she glanced back as Tath looked at the replicator choices. Wanting to be sure it was his decision, and not her desire, not, that kept him there, she moved to the furthest side the room to stare into space.

Her quarters were simple. There were a variety of weapons on the wall from several cultures. Though a bat’leth was conspicuously absent. From Earth swords and daggers to Andorian fighting knives, to an ancient Cheron personal blade that looked a bit rusted and chipped with age. Scattered the coffee table were various odds and ends. From a small crystalline geode to several flimsheets of various places on the ship, to a padd that was powered off. On the back of a chair was a beautiful blanket in greens and gold, and a pillow and blanket were folded the far end of the couch like someone had been sleeping there.

He fiddled with the machine and got 2 Earl Grey Teas. “I figured this will help calm everything down.” He looked around her quarters, “Quite the collection of weapons. You alright, Kal?” He asked noticing that she was at the far end of the room. As he approached her to put her tea down, he could have sworn he heard something like a klingon growl under it’s breath, he looked at the bedroom where it sounded like it came from, but all there was, was darkness.

She took the tea and smiled knowing it had been on her ‘favorites’ list. It was nice he enjoyed it too. “I needed to be sure. I can keep the pheromones in check, but sometimes in high stress, they leak. You were so close…” She looked at him and sighed. “Look, it’s been over a year. Except for one other person, I am respected, but hardly considered a bunk mate or even one night stand companion material. I may be a half Orion security officer the Captain trusts. But I’m still a chemically enhanced creature most will smile and wave at, but hardly hug,” she laughed a bit, almost like her old self, “much less anything else.”

She took her cup and moved back towards the couch. Taking another sip, she sat down near the middle and then set the cup on the table. “I had to be sure that you still had a way to depart in a manner that saved your pride, if you had come here without truly meaning to.” She hadn’t looked up at him, but kept staring at her half empty cup.

“No, Kal. I came here because I want to get to know the real you more. Not the Lt. That is my supervisor, the real Kalika Darz. Honestly, if I just wanted a one night stand, I’d be at Ten Forward in the holosuites with a dabo girl. But, that’s not who I am. Didn’t even do that in the war, when all the other Klingons would. I don’t see honor in those type of connections.” He refilled thier tea, and chose a klingon food dish from her favorites section on the replicator. “What I’m trying to say is, I don’t want to like you because your pheramones are telling me to, and I don’t want to like you just to have a one night stand, I said I would have your back on duty and off duty, and I meant that, Kal.”

She looked at him as he moved back to the replicator with her cup. As he began to speak, she rose up and moved to him. She was still nervous. But the fact he was aware of her abilities and wasn’t scared of them made her a bit more bold than usual. When he set the small dish of Klingon finger meat pies on the table, she smiled. “If you are trying to win your way in thru my stomach, you may be winning.” She picked one up and moved to him closing the gap. “I can’t make any promises, Tath. Not of what the ship will do, or that I can give myself to you without hesitation.” She sighed realizing she was holding back despite now wanting to. “But I can promise I would like to get to know you as well. And the idea of being with you makes me feel better, and safer, than I have in a very long time.”

After they finished the finger meat pies, and thier tea, he put his arm around her, and she cuddled into it, then he one handedly unfolded the blanket and put it over her. He was pretty sure she fell asleep.

They had talked about their pasts, and her passion to learn more about the bat’leth. He spoke of his past as well and she learned he was good at deflecting things back to her. As they cuddled on the couch, she soon found herself dozing. She had tried a couple times to tell him he could go, but he insisted. As she fell asleep on the couch, the two of them stretched out comfortably with the blanket over them, she realized she hadn’t seen the ghost.

But it wasn’t so fortunate a night for Tath. As soon as Kalika lost consciousness, the ghost appeared near the exterior wall. She has trapped you… she will kill you…it’s what she is good at… The ghost whispered but it was heard by him none the less. The grin on the Klingon apparition was one of wickedness.

Ensign Sharvi looked at the ghost, “You are done messing with her. Do you hear me? I am Tath’ihl Martok, the son of Martok, of the great house of Martok, you will no longer dishonor her like this. She didn’t kill you, and I won’t believe she will kill me, no matter what you say. Now leave us alone, and don’t come back here again.” He snarled, and the ghost disappeared. She stirred a bit, but he cuddled her, and she went back to sleep.
