Peter paused for a moment “I wasn’t aware of that.” He started thinking of the Commanders file, he had gotten a more indepth look into the man shortly after they had drinks together not so long ago. Peter started tapping at the screen in front of them, accessing his personal files he opened up the Commanders intelligence record.

Nevin’s file did not have any periods ‘blacked out’. He was an orphan of war raised by Cardassian foster parents who had been exiled from Cardassia. At the Academy he had been noted as shy and nervious and whilst his tutors knew he would make a very good doctor, they didn’t think he would ever perform well in a position of leader ship. Nevin became CMO of the Olympic less than a week after graduating. It was as though the shy and nervous young man from the Academy had experienced an epithany. He had, however simply stepped up as the most senior survivng doctor onboard. Since then he had served well on a number of ships as CMO with nothing out of the ordinary.

Cross referencing the files & service records of those involved would show that Nevin had been assigned to both the Athena & the Odin shortly after Grimshaw had been CMO. It would also indicate that at the time of the biological attack on James McHarrie, Nevin was serving as CMO of the USS Atlantis. McHarrie had requested that the medical teams contact Nevin for advice.

The only time that the three men had served on one ship simoultanously was the USS Semmelweiss. McHarrie was the CO, Akorem was the CMO and Grimshaw was a mission specialist. The Semmelweiss had crossed into Romulan Space on an aid mission and after 2 months returned having been expelled from Romulan Space accused of leading a covert operation and spying. Grimshaw had been left behind having allegedly disclosing details of a covert mission to the Romulans.

More recently, Nevin had served as a medical expert in a case involving poisoning at the academy, where the alleged assailant was Cadet John McHarrie… The same man that was currently on Grimshaw’s ship.

-Akorem

“Nothing of note” He finished the checkup “Except this, USS Semmelweiss. The Mission that got Grimshaw his blacklisting and why I was familiar with him. It’s also one of the reasons I’ve kept such a close eye on the Commander, he’s very young and bright but he’s been involved with a great many mysteries in his short time here” He left the file open for Kara to look at. There was going to need to be a conversation, preferably with all three men stuck in a chair amnd him with a pair of teezers and a wet sock.

CIO

Nakuto stepped forward and studied the file’s details intently.
“Our friend Nevin seems to have a particular interest in cases of poisoning. Something of a specialty of his?”
She stepped back and ran a hand through her raven-black hair before turning again to Sigmundsson.
“Listen, Peter,” she began, “I realise that, as crewmembers on this vessel, we both now report to Akorem in the chain of command and that what I am about to ask puts you in a somewhat difficult position. But…I feel as if I have no other choice. And no other person onboard who I trust as completely as you.”

There was no hint of emotion from Peter’s face, he was simply listening.

A tortured sigh was released from the half-Klingon’s throat before she continued with her request.
“I want a tail on our dear First Officer. I want to know what he does when he is off duty, where he goes, who he associates with. He is involved with all of this somehow, I just know it. And believe me, the last entanglement I had with James McHarrie did not end well for anyone onboard.”

The only reaction from her request was a narrowing of his eyes ever so slightly.

She began to pace around the cramped confines of the abandoned quarters.
“So, where do we go from here?” she appealed for further insight from the CIO. “Do we contact James McHarrie and try to determine his current situation? Or do we approach Commander Nevin and sound him out further? Or do we keep it all to ourselves for now and do our own, covert investigations?”

Kara Nakuto

Peter’s left hand uncrossed and he started stroking his chin in great thought. “Whatever we decide to do we need to be careful.” He looked at Kara as she paced around the room “The ship is working barely at 30% capacity, I only have five people on the ship that answer only to me. Now some of the Security staff used to work for me but that was a long time ago so I won’t be able to use them. Anyone with half a brain would be able to notice a tail on a starship so big and so understaffed, especially the same five faces. If we were to start monitoring him it would have to be electronically” He seemed to fly over the fact that she was asking him to spy on their Executive Officer. There was a tingling, there was a case here, he just didn’t know what.

“I can set up surveillance fairly easily. use one of these abandoned quarters as a base of operations. The tradecraft is the easy bit, It’s what you tell the Commander” he turned to Kara, placing his hands on his hips “He doesn’t know I was involved, let’s keep it that way. Inform him of the recent developments, that McHarrie has been captured by Grimshaw, Grimshaw’s demands but no details. I monitor him whilst you contact the Elder McHarrie, right now we control the flow of information. Grimshaw may or may not be traitor but he’s a complete amateur when it comes to Tradecraft, it’s unlikely he’ll try to contact anyone else.”

Peter Sigmundsson

OOC: Excellent - We’ve setup some IC tensions here (even though Kara hasn’t yet opened the file Junior sent). If Kara wants to open the file to see what’s inside, then go ahead but in terms of action, I’d like to focus on the main sim with Kara & Peter watching / being suspicious of Nevin and we can then progress this side-sim once Josh has completed his evil work.

-Jim

OOC: Oops, my bad. I thought the file contained Nevin’s records! Doh!

IC: The Viking’s former Captain ceased her pacing and spun once again to face the CIO as she considered his suggestions.
“Yes, I agree that we will be best to keep your involvement in this hidden from Akorem for the moment. I suspect your current relationship with him is more amicable than my own. No point in raising his suspicions without cause.”

Returning to the terminal, Kara’s eyes briefly regarded the still-unopened file blinking for attention. The last file she had received from a McHarrie had seen her scouring the ship for imaginary creatures and ended with a grizzly death and the sudden departure of John. She had no desire to unleash a second Pandora’s box onto the struggling ship. And yet…she could not deny her innate curiosity at the file’s potential contents.

With graceful fingers hovering over the terminal controls, she fielded her desire for information a few monents longer as she continued her dialogue with Sigmundsson.
“And use whatever means you think are best. With the lower decks out of commission it will not be too difficult to hide our operation. And while I am sure you have sufficient means to acquire any equipment you may need, through official channels or…otherwise, let me know if I can assist in any way. I may be largely a stranger here nowadays but…I still have a friend or two onboard this ship.”

So. Their plan was set. She would report back to Commander Akorem select details of her conversation with Grimshaw and then offer a similarly superficial story to James McHarrie.

Only one small matter remained. With a deep breath, Kara brought her fingers down onto the keypad and unlocked the file from Matthew Grimshaw…

Kara Nakuto

The file contained information about Reman imps. All of the content the James McHarrie had provided in the package that Kara had recieved before, but there was more video footage from the lab containing the small evasive creatures in containment pods. Unlike McHarries copy of the footage when the Romulan scientists left the image didn’t fill with static. Revealing what happened in the previously ‘lost’ section of footage Kara saw a transporter beam and three men materialised, James McHarrie, Matthew Grimshaw and Akorem Nevin. The men were carrying two empty containment pods which they swapped for pods containing imps. They then opened the third pod in the lab and beamed out…

-Akorem

As the footage played out on the small screen in front of them, the scowl on Kara’s face increased in intensity. At the conclusion, she reached out for any object she could find, which in this case happened to be a discarded hyperspanner, and threw it with as much force as she could muster against the far wall.

“Damn James McHarrie and damn his ridiculous Reman Imps!” she roared into the ether. Then, belatedly recalling that she had company, she offered a shrug to Peter before adding, with no lesser measure of anger, “This is nonsense! James McHarrie had me scouring this ship for weeks for blasted Reman Imps. I devoted entire teams of security officers to the task when I could barely spare a one of them. That is how the portal appeared under our noses without a single warning, because my crew were too preoccupied with hunting for fictional monsters!”

She collapsed into a chair and stared at the closing image, now frozen on the terminal before them. Akorem Nevin. It had been he who recently planted the idea into Kara’s mind that Section 31 might bear some responsibility for the state of the Viking. And now she had discovered that he was in cahoots with the lot of them.

“Akorem Nevin will be lucky if he does not wake to my bat’leth pressed against his throat!” she spat. Then, glancing up at Sigmundsson, she offered him a mock-innocent smile. “Do not worry, Peter. I am not so completely unbalanced as to allow my anger to jeopardise our operation. But now it is even more vital that we discover exactly who our First Officer is. And what he wants from us.”

Wearily, the half-Klingon extended her hand and, with fluid motions across the terminal controls, she played back Grimshaw’s footage once again.

“What do you make of this, Peter?” she ventured, wryly. “Are you a believer in Reman Imps?”

Kara Nakuto

Peter’s reaction was not at all similar to Kara’s. He appeared more surprised than angry. Reman Imps, he’d not even heard the term before. Well he could recall reading some mission reports mentioning it but nothing jumped at him. He crossed his massive arms once more and sighed “I don’t know Cap, Akorem is involved in something that’s for certain, the sooner we figure out what the better.” This time it was his turn for pacing the room “I’m going to need more surveillance than I originally thought. I’ll need access to his quarters, clothing and probably files.” He stopped and turned to the Half Klingon and smiled back “Where I’m from we don’t discount anything just because we’ve never seen it before.”

Peter Sigmundsson

Bump

Kara nodded. “Gather as much information on our mysterious First Officer as you can. If luck is on our side then the customary apathy that this ship receives from Starfleet will see my former clearances still in place. If not, then…well, I am still an engineer, after all,” she added with a wink.

“In the meantime,” she continued, as she began to run a program to wipe all activity logs from this random terminal, “I shall deliver a report to Nevin on my conversation with McHarrie. Let us see how far our Bajoran boss is willing to go with this charade.”

Evidence of their activity wiped from record as effectively as was possible with an omnipresent Artificial Intelligence watching over them at all times, the half-Klingon powered down the station and began to head for the door. Pausing at the threshold, she paused and turned to face the burly CIO once more.

“And Peter…thank you for your help with this. For all the turmoil laid in my path since my arrival on this damned ship, surely the gods were smiling down on me the day you were assigned here.” She punctuated her statement with a brief burst of laughter. “Although from your viewpoint I am sure it seems entirely the opposite of good fortune!”
