“Eep!” Kaylia squealed. She wasn’t squimish, it was just the surprise. That and she was hoping it was not what ran through her mind that it might be a body. Evidently it was. Well part of one. “Geeez.....okay that’s a problem..” Shaking her head and not moving, that way it would not compromise what now is a crime scene.

Kaylia’s squeal made Nevin jump. He rushed over to her from where he was. “OK, let’s keep a cool head,” Nevin said as he took out his tricorder. It was only after he had said it that he realised how innapropriate the metaphor was for the circumstances.

He scanned the head to try and identify who it belonged to, how long it had been since it had been removed and also to see if the tricorder could identify if decapitation was the actual cause of death or whether decapitation had occured after death.

Kalika had left the other two on the bridge and moved to clear the adjascent rooms when a half gasp, half cry, of surprise brought her back with her hand on her phaser. “What happened?” She moved to see Akorem was scanning a head. “Well, that’s not a good sign…” She waited till his scan was done and glanced around before pointing to a vacant chair nearby. “Set it there when done. We will get a container from one of the other departments and take it back to the Viking with us. Maybe we can figure out then what happened. Right now, let’s see what is happening with those us still alive.”

She didn’t like the idea of a disembodied head falling from a panel. Laying on the floor means maybe the body had just been dragged off… but being tucked away, means it was a conscious decision for it to be there. “Can you get the panel working with the head not there, now?”

Kaylia held still for the scan then turned it around to look the head right in the eyes. As carefully as she could of course. “What happened to you…” It was a rhetorical question. Giving a glance to Kalika’s discomfort, she could go and set it in a chair. At least it had three sides to keep it stable from hitting the floor. Coming back to get down there and on her back. Leaning up again and fiddling around, “Should be. Give me…about a minute and a half, Chief.”

“I’m sure the Viking will have an ID for us soon,” Nevin said returned to the ‘Orange box’ and began sending the flight data & logs back to the Viking. He briefly ponderred why the Flight Data Recorder was known as an “Orange Box” when the unit itself was the same metalic grey colour of every other panel and console on a starship.

“OK, let’s get one of these consoles working and take a look at the Captain’s log,” he said indicating to one of the smaller operations consoles at the rear of the bridge.

“That is why they call them a black box or used to actually, because of the color of it, sir.” Kaylia gave a nod. “Other than the fact I had a bloody head in my lap…I did fix the power so…Should be able to just reroute power there and we can view it on the viewscreen.” Moving over there to give a bit of working on. “Try it now.”

The viewer flickered slowly to life, like it had not been used in decades. Fractions of images seemed to show on the viewer for a second or so. Massive sharp teeth....green scales....blood....and a piercing scream as the view exploded. Debris and glass showered the crew on the Bridge as a fire broke out from the exposed wiring. Green flames played across the wires and the floor as it began to spread.
