The shadows leered at David as he left the Counselors office and made his way to Sickbay. Doing his best to ignore thim he kept a brisk walking up, but when a whisper of “Haaaarrrrrryyyy” creaked in the corridor his step faltered. He paused listening out, but the whisper didn’t come again so he dismissed it as imagining it, and resumed walking. The name came a second time, just as David reached the doors of Sickbay and walked through. Ignoring it this time, he walked in and looked around for someone who might be able to point out where the CMO might be. He’d messaged ahead of time so the CMO ought to be expecting him, but given the state of the Viking, he wouldn’t be surprised if the message had never come through.

“Another new doctor,” Stein said without introduction, more or less appearing next to Harrington when he walked through the door way into Sickbay. “An ensign too. How may I help you Doctor?”

Dr. Stein, CMO

“Must be your lucky day,” David returned dryly, “The CMO I presume?” He held out his hand to shake, “Doctor Ensign Harrington, I’m here for my physical and to report for duty,”

Despite being in his early thirties, there was something that made David appear much older. His eyes were shadowed, and his face was already sporting the beginnings of a beard, though his hair was kept to Starfleet standard. It was also obvious that Harrington was much too thin to be considered healthy, and his uniform hung loosely off him was somewhat baggy, as if he’d lost all his weight since he’d last worn it.

“Oh drats my cover is blown,” Stein said dryly but didn’t accept Harrington’s hand, looking him over with his sharp eyes. “You are unhealthy. Are you sure you are fit for duty?”

The CMO didn’t wait for a response before walking over to a bio-bed and tapping the surface. “Hop up and lay back. Don’t move, or rather you can move but try to limit the movement.” He tapped a few buttons opening up a new file. “Why are you so gaunt?”

CMO

Moving with the air of Command unusal in Ensigns, though if the CMO had read his file he’d know that the man before him hadn’t always been an Ensign, Harrington walked over to the designated bio-bed and lay down. “I’ve just lost a touch of weight,” David said nonchalantly, “Haven’t been looking after myself as well as I should have, but I’m trying to fix it now. As long as I don’t lose anymore weight I should be fine for duty,”

“Mm,” the CMO said with a frown, punching a few buttons into the console then documenting the results. “Double rats for the next month. Along with PT to bulk up.” He frowned again, “And, for that matter, I should check you for anemia and tape worms. Up tick in Goran tape worms. Nasty devils.”

CMO

David blinked, the first image striking him when the CMO had said ‘double rats’ was the disgusting earth vermin and wondered why they were important. At least until he realised that the other doctor had probably used the word rats for an entirely different reason than what David was imagining. And then there was the issue of the… “Tape worms? I don’t think I have tape worms sir,” He shuddered at the thought of the parasite living inside him slowly eating away at everything he consumed.

“Have you ever been checked for tape worms, Ensign?” Stein said quite blandly as he picked up his tricorder and waved it in the general direction of Harrington’s abdominal wall. “It could be in there, latched onto your small intestine slowly consuming everything you eat until you waste away into nothingness,” he coninued before pausing and tapping his chin in thought, “You know they used to administer tape worms as a form of diet supplement. Have one around in your gut for a month or two then take the poison to flush it out. Isn’t it amazing what medicine can do?”

OOC: Bump

“I can’t say I have…” David trailed off, he couldn’t see why he would be, wrinkling his nose in distaste at the uncomfortable image the CMO was painting. “That all sounds… primitive. I don’t think I have tape worms.” The doctors scan would back up that the doctor was not infested with worms or bugs of any kind. Although he was definitely anemic and lacking in iron.

“Well this was the 1890s or so,” Stein explained as he continues his examination. After a moment he tapped the biobed with one of his fingers. “You are free to go. You don’t have any tapeworms. Did you have any additional questions for me?”

Dr. Stein

David shook his head automatically but then paused. The question burning on the back of his mind, the one that had been there since he’d first been assigned to the Viking. It wasn’t a bottle he wanted to open, but at the same time, he - doubtlessly like any other officer assigned wanted to know - if the ship was truly haunted. He opened his mouth and then closed it.

After some careful deliberation, he came up with a compromise question instead. “What’s the ship like?” he asked uncertainly, uncomfortable more because he knew the ships reputation than because of the question.

“You mean to ask, are the rumors true regarding its unusual crew,” Stein responded with a small grin before returning to the sickbay computer terminal, entering some data. “Well, we aren’t the Flying Dutchman. We have no black sails and last I checked we aren’t a crew of the damned, however,” he turned and arched his thin eyebrows, “Strange things happen aboard this ship. We -are- a crew of rejects, no? Out beyond the void, cut off from help. I would dare say most of us have skeletons in our closet.”

“Most of us probably do,” David offered a weak smile, Harry once again invading his thoughts.

The CMO fell silent as he worked then offered, “For my part I… have been told I don’t work well with others and am unsettling. Something about me moving too silently. It doesn’t matter, pathology is my field of expertise. What is yours?”

David wet the corner of his mouth before he spoke, “I lost ranks for recklessness, apparently I was becoming a liablity. My own parents authorised it if I hadn’t such a good officer before all of that happened I doubt I’d ever have been allowed to come back. I’ve never put another persons life on the line, even then.” He swallowed, leaving the rest unsaid. “Genetics has always been my main department, and I do my job well.” His voice was void of any emotion, but he shrugged, “If the job is done to an appropriate standard then whats a few small vices.”
