OOC: I’m starting a side sim set to help keep people posting until our GM returns.

IC: It was a few days after the Viking had left the anomaly known as the Devil’s Castello. Unexpectedly at around 15:00 both Nakuto & Sigmundsson received a text message that simply read ‘Wanted to see how you’re doing. Come find me for a catchup.”

It would not take the pair long to trace the source of the message via a number of internal terminals back to a computer terminal in the Thunderdome. If they were to check the sensors for the room the only life sign they would detect was the XO’s son. The audio and video feeds were not working…

-Dakin

Peter had been in his office reading through the weekly intelligence reports. The glamorous life of an intelligence officer was more or less reading classified reports and analyses, monitoring ship transmissions and classifying necessary reports. When he received a message on his console he was immediately interested, not ignoring the fact that he wasn’t expecting a message and wasn’t sure what this involved. He got one of his subordinates to take over his post as he traced the message. After noting where it came from he sent Kara a message, having noted she was also a recipient of this message. ‘Going to T-Dome, come prepared’ He sent, implying the obvious. He opened his drawer and drew out a type two phaser in a holster and attached it to his waist and made his way to the turbolift.

After a few minutes, he arrived. Outside the entrance, he checked the internal sensors. He frowned as he identified the child of Commander Akorem. Why would a message addressed to the pair of officers engaged in a covert investigation of their first officer lead them to his 9-year-old child. He waited a moment before entering, seeing if Captain Nakuto would be joining him soon.

CIO

The console at the entrance was the one used to send the message, but a scan of the console would show that the boy had not used it, not even to open the door, let alone send a message. The console would also show that none of the doors to the Thunderdome were locked and anyone could enter or leave at any time they wished. It was almost like an invite to just walk in…

Peter looked at the results of his slight scan and quietly cursed. Normally in a situation such as this, he’d call security and the XO but these circumstances were extenuating and with his private investigation into the first officer just now starting he couldn’t show his hand just yet. Peter drew his phaser and set it to high stun then holstered it again, if need be he could quickdraw faster than expected. He then double-checked his sleeves for the short throwing blades he kept there. Lastly, he zipped down his jacket and put his hand in, adjusting the strap on his larger combat knife, perhaps too many weapons to carry during regular duty on a Starfleet Vessel but the nature of the Viking kept you on your toes. Satisfied that he was subsequently prepared for any situation he opened the door and entered, Kara could follow in but he didn’t feel comfortable waiting any longer.

The doors parted revealing the access to the arena between the rows tiered bleacher seat. In the middle of the Thunderdome arena Antos sat in the sand but he was not alone. The man with him was thin and wearing an ill-fitting Starfleet uniform. The pair were talking and drawing with their fingers in the sand.

The man look around and Peter would recognise him as Matthew Grimshaw.

“I wondered how long it would take you?” he called. He got up, erased the drawings in the sand with his feet and started walking with the child towards where Peter was. He stopped about a metre inside the arena with Antos at his side.

“Remember what I said, son” Junior said looking down at Antos, “Don’t tell your Dad. I want my visit to be a surprise.”

The visitor crouched down and hugged Antos. It was clear that there was some familiarity between the pair as the child hugged back.

“I won’t spoil it,” Antos replied.

Junior rose and ushered the boy onwards towards the door that Peter had just come in through. The man did not speak until Antos had left and the door had closed shutting out the corridor.”So is it just you, or is the half-breed skulking in the shadows like a coward?” he asked glancing suspiciously at the gaps between the tiers that Nakuto could have gone down.

-Junior

If Peter was surprised by the appearance of Junior he didn’t show it outwardly, he viewed the scene with a certain curiosity but that was it. He stayed silent until the doors closed and he was certain the child was gone”Perhaps” He said looking at the man with the same stoic face as before when they’d talked first “Entirely unimportant” He took a step closer to Grimshaw, looking down at him with his intense gaze shifting his weight carefully. “Now, you have until my shift ends to tell me why you called me here” His head cocked slightly “Which gives you a few minutes. If you bore me or insult Captain Nakuto again in those few minutes I’ll have to take this off” He nodded towards his Starfleet Combadge “Then remove something of you” His tone was the same casual as when he’d threatened the Former officers life no more than a week ago.

CIO

“She would have shown herself at that insult. She’s probably looking for my shuttle, but there’s no need to waste her time on that,” Junior said, “I came to see how you’re getting on. Thought you’d appreciate an in-person visit. One way I could offer you assurance I have not crossed the neutral zone yet.”

“But that doesn’t mean I won’t,” Junior added before taking an item from his pocket and tossing it to Sigmundson. It was the pendant that Reira had given John, “I’m not an entirely bad person. I’d hate for that borg artifact to find its way into Romulan Intelligence Hands. They’d be after your drone for sure if it did.”

-Junior

Peter examined the artefact and Kara’s warning echoed through his mind John McHarrie is not hostage to Grimshaw. They are working together. He looked up at Junior “You took quite the risk coming here” He gave the man an empty grim smile “I’m still on the fence about letting you live” He tossed the pendant with obvious disdain from the pair “Now last we spoke you tried to blackmail and coerce my friend into doing your bidding “He took another step closer, monitoring the man with care. He wondered what traps he had set there, what escape he had planned “But before I thank you for that I have my part in our bargain” His smile faded “It’s unlikely that Intelligence will even consider clearing your name, I can try but no promises. I can, however, get you citizenship under an assumed identity. You’d need a new face and name but you’d be a free man. That’s what I can convince Command to give you with what you have” His smile returned “However, there is more you can give there is a chance to clear your name.” There was a polite edge to his tone.

CIO

“New face is not part of the deal,” Junior replied, “There are things I have done and served the time for. All that needs to be fixed is the things I didn’t do,” Junior said, “James cares a great deal for his nephew and that is his weakness. In the same way Dakin is mine and James knows that. Now if you have an idea that will do that without James McHarrie’s black jacket influence then I’m all ears, but John stays with me until then. Once I have my life back John’s free. I may even visit here for sporting fight with you and Nakuto. Reckon this place has quite a buzz about with an audience.”

-Junior

Peter chuckled with what sounded like actual amusement “Son, you wouldn’t last five minutes in the dome with the Captain”

“Maybe, but I’m sure you’dfind it entertaining nevertheless,” Junior replied

His expression changed somewhat, emotion leaving and replaced with focus “You want to me to help you clear your name, give me some evidence that it deserves cleaning. If you’re innocent then you’re innocent it’s as simple as that” He seemed to ignore the black jacket comment, whether because of ignorance or other reasons wasn’t clear “You give evidence of your innocence then you’ll be protected.” Now that he was standing at arm’s length Peter briefly considered simply cutting his throat thus removing the problem. The thought lingered for a moment before fading to dust “And remember, I don’t have a personal stake in this. The only reason you’re still alive is because it’d inconvenience the Captain”

CIO

“I was convicted of being a spy based upon the word of a Section 31 Captain,” Junior replied, “I could not even defend myself at the court case because the same captain that abandoned me on a Romulan desert planet with no means of getting home.”

Junior folded his arms, “I don’t know who blew the whistle on us. Hell it could’ve been the imp for all I know. I gather no-one found it after it broke free.”

Junior regarded Peter carefully, “Don’t you think if I had evidence I would’ve just presented it? I am not the short-fused person that belted the admiral all those years ago.”

-Junior

“You could have fooled me” Peter said with careful sarcasm “Don’t forget, section 31 doesn’t exist, officially. You were Convicted on the word of a Starfleet Captain, a rather unimpeachable” He gave the man a sardonic grin “No you’re not the same man who punched that admiral, I doubt he was stupid enough to try to blackmail and coerce two Starfleet Officers into doing his bidding” He took a step to the side and started walking around the dome slowly… deliberately.

“Although considering the rest of your career I think he just might have” He stopped himself, now wasn’t the time to insult the man, he still had some actionable intel “Tell me, why did you come in person? What is it you’re so afraid of that you’d rather face prison again” He asked as he crossed behind the man.

CIO

“I thought you and Nakuto would appreciate the gesture of trust that I am placing in you,” Junior said, “If I was safer in prison I would not have… how shall we say… left and I would not be seeking the one man who can secure my freedom.”

Junior did not prevent Peter from making his walk, but as the CIO was approaching the area where Junior had been sat, he seem to watch a little more intently.

“Arrest me if you wish,” Junior said, “But I won’t be able to ensure John’s safety from the inside of the brig. How long can he survive bound without food or water?”

-Junior

Peter slowed down as he reached the area where Junior’s gaze changed slightly. As he stopped he put both hands behind his back in a rather casual way “He’ll be fine for now” His tone turning more casual “And if I decide to detain you it won’t be in the brig where you have all the rights afforded to sapients. I file enough reports as it is” Peter’s fingers interlocked “It’s actually kind of funny, by holding a hostage you are proving Section 31’s point. I’ve known S31 Operatives before, despite their indifference to morality and the sanctity of life they do have, in their own way, the safety of the Federation in mind. It doesn’t befit a Starfleet Officer, former or otherwise, to hold someone hostage and try to blackmail his way back into the fold. It goes against our very ideals, ideals that our officers have killed and died for, Ideals that I have killed for.” He finished in the same casual tone

CIO

If Peter were to look down he would see that whatever hand been drawn in the sand had been wiped away by feet. At the edges there were traces of bajoran letters, but not enough to be able to discern what had been written.

Peter didn’t give it an obvious look but memorized the traces, it might be useful later on.

“Section 31 abandoned me on a Romulan desert because I asked for 5 minutes to save an innocent Romulan child’s life,” Junior said, “When they left me behind, I fully expected to be tortured and killed. To never see family again, so do not lecture me about starfleet ideals which I sacrificed everything for.”

“The local Romulans helped me evade the security forces. They shared their limited supplies with me. One brought me the news that I’d been charged and was considered a fugitive by my own people,” Junior said, “Life changes us. I don’t want to be back in the fold. I want to be free to go home and be left alone.”

-Junior

Peter cocked his head slightly “Once again the point just flies over your head. But no matter” As his head returned to its original position his neck cracked satisfyingly “However, I am willing to help if doing so gives me insight into Section 31’s operations.” He said ever so casually “We have yet to contact James McHarrie but as far as anyone is concerned I am not involved in this at all.” Pausing for a moment before continuing “Tell me, what did you do with the Reman Imps after your mission?”
