Ensign Cartwright smiled nervously as he led the rest of the away team towards the command centre. “Thank you for coming to help us…” he said quietly. “Things have been a little crazy round here recently…” he added as they entered the turbolift at the end of the corridor.

They piled in to the turbolift which was feeling a little cramped and sped towards the command centre which was 10 decks up. As they neared the top, the computer let out a disgruntled bleep and the turbolift began plummeting downwards again at an alarming rate.

Cartwright frantically started pressing buttons on the console which now seemed unresponsive.

OOC: Hope you folks like rollercoasters?!

Nevin had not felt comfortable cramped into the turbolift. Whilst the colony’s lift was larger than what those on a Starship and was rated to safely carry more people than were in the lift, Nevin could not envision how any more could possible get in. He sudenly felt lighter as the lift carriage went into free fall and had mentally braced himself for the increased G-force that would occur when the emergency breaking systems would or indeed should activate.

It was taking too long. From his position in the middle of the tiny space he would only be a hinderance if he headed for a terminal, which seemed to be unresponsive for cartwright.

=/\=Computer. Emergency Halt,=/\= he said in the hopes that the voice controls would prove more reliable…

In a terrifyingly chilling computer voice, the computer replied with two simple words.

=^= Make me… =^=

As they hurtled towards the ground, Ensign Cartwright started crying. “I don’t want to die in a turbolift!!” he sobbed.

Peter was not designed to stand in a crowded lift. He made sure to stand in the back so that his massive frame wouldn’t push too hard on anyone. After the lift became unresponsive he regretted that decision, now if the lift went faster he would probably crush his crewmates and the weeping ensign “Then don’t” He said in his booming baritone “Can anyone reach the panel, we need to open it and override the lift controls” He asked his shipmates as it was fairly obvious that Cartwright would be entirely useless.

CIO

“I will be able to in a moment,” Nevin said he squeezed to move and switch places with Cartwright from his position nearest the panel.

Once there, Nevin began to unclip the edges,

“OK, I’m in but, someone’s going to have to talk me through this,” Nevin said calmly. He wasn’t even going to look to see who gave him the first step as he looked at the maze of cables and lights that connected the back of the control panel to the systems that were normally out of site behind it.

Cartwright scurried away on all fours and cowered in the corner of the turbolift. As the lift neared the bottom, it suddenly changed direction as started speeding off towards the outer rim of the colony. The computer gave them a helpful reminder.

= Please remember, keep all arms and legs inside the lift whilst in motion to avoid catastrophic injury. =

The computer almost sounded as though it was threatening them as it careened out of control towards the residential sector.

Peter quietly cursed the fact that they didn’t have any engineers with them “Alright, you’ll want to bypass the Computers controll over the lift. Assuming that none of us have a Hyperspanner you’re going to have to rewire it directly.” Peter went through his memory of the bypass procedures “You should be able to stop the computer from having access then manual engage the break system. Darz I can’t see the panel, do you have a better view?” He asked the Security Chief, he was certain she would have similar expertise as himself.”

CIO

Nevin began reading the labels on the various panels. “The emergency brakes are like a deadman’s lever, are they not?” Nevin asked, “They require power to stay disengaged, so kill the power and the clamps close?”
