He sat in the co-pilots seat of the shuttle, his sister Abigail beside him. They had spent the last nine months together on board the USS Boyce, where Abigail was assigned as the main helm officer. It had been refreshing for him to spend time with his sister, but now it was time for him to move on and he had taken this transfer to the USS Viking to accept the position of Chief Science Officer there.

Captain Addams of the Boyce had graciously let Abigail handle the transfer and pilot his shuttle herself.

“You know I’m going to miss you,” She said, looking over with him, a smile on her face.

Tyler smiled back. “I’ll miss you too. It’s been so wonderful having these past months together.”

“We are almost in range of the Viking,” Abigail reported. “You sure you don’t want me to turn around and take us back?”

Tyler chuckled, running a hand through his messy brown hair. “I think Captain Addams was ready to get rid of me.” Abigail’s mouth dropped open in mock surprise, to which Tyler gave her a playful grin. “Besides, I feel like this will be good for me. Plus, it was nice to see a familiar name on the roster.”

“Just promise me you will take care of yourself,” Abigail said. “No more attacks from crazy people with experimental weapons.”

Tyler drew a criss cross over his chest with one finger. “Cross my heart.”

Abigail reached over and took one of Tyler’s hands, giving it a squeeze. “We are within comms range. I’ll alert them of our arrival.” A few minutes later the response came in that Tyler was cleared to transport on board.

The siblings stood, giving each other one last embrace. Then Tyler moved to the rear of the shuttle.

“I love you,” He said to his sister.

She smiled, a tear falling down her cheek. “I love you too.” Wiping away the tear, she gave him a nod. “Energizing.”

Then the transporter beam overtook him and the next thing he saw was the transporter room on board the USS Viking.

“Lieutenant Tyler Wells, reporting for duty,” Tyler said as he stepped down from the transporter pad.

-Lt Tyler Michael Wells, CSO

Almost immidiately Wells was swarmed by a pair of Doctors waving the wand from their medical tricorders in his face and all other parts. After a moment of quiet scanning, they turned back and looked at a man standing next to the transporter controls with crossed arms. The room was unusually dark so he was more of a silhouette than anything else “He’s alright, everything seems to be in the right spot but he should report to sickbay for a proper examination” One of the NE’s said.

The man nodded and the two doctors stepped off the platform and left the room. The man standing before the Scientist stepped closer revealing a very large man in a yellow uniform and a Lieutenant Commanders pips on his neck. He smiled briefly at the new officer “Apologies, our transporters have a history of…” He hesitated as he searched for the correct words “Well we try to avoid using. Incoming transporter patterns shouldn’t be too much of a problem but it’s better safe than sorry” He paused as if he realized something “Right, apologies again. I’m Lieutenant Commander Peter Sigmundsson, Chief Intelligence Officer.” He put a massive hand out to shake “I wanted to be the first to welcome you onboard” His tone was polite but formal.

CIO

Tyler looked at the man, one eyebrow raised curiously. Then he took the hand and shook it with military firmness. “Thank you sir. I’m happy to be here.” He found it slightly odd that the person sent to meet him was the Intelligence officer. He wondered did the CIO look at Tyler’s file beforehand and notice the unfortunate Section 31 incident?

“So,” Tyler said, putting any questioning thoughts out of his mind. “Are you here to give me the official welcome tour of the ship?” His lips curled up into a grin.

-Lt Tyler Michael Wells, CSO

Peter nodded slightly “You could say that. I don’t doubt you’ve heard the rumors about the Viking and her state, I’ll show you where to go and where to avoid going” He indicated to the door then walked with the man outdoors “We currently have about half of the necessary crew compliment, we’re the last on every ship repair list and we’ve not had much of a moment to pause for a long time now. Our last resupply was interrupted with a new mission, most of our transporter systems are offline and I’d avoid spending much time in Engineering unless you have to” He explained it all very slowly and calmly as if it were the most natural thing in the world. The corridor was unusually quiet “It wasn’t always like this, it’s been a rough couple of years, especially after the disappearances a few years back but things have started to come back to normal, we even have some families onboard” He smiled briefly “So I understand that you were originally going to be a Marine?” He asked apparently from nowhere.

CIO

“Disappearances huh?” Tyler asked, raising an eyebrow. He would have to ask more about that later. For now, he walked alongside the CIO. “So I take it you’ve read my file.” He smiled. “I originally intended to join the Marine program for StarFleet, but then someone convinced me to go into Science. I think that was a good move on my part. I do keep up with combat training and martial arts and such. Always good skills to keep handy.”

Peter nodded in agreement, so far so good.

He looked around as they walked. “Tell me more about the ship and the crew.”

-Lt. Tyler Michael Wells, CSO

“Alright, The Viking is it’s class’ namesake, she’s been around for a good eighteen years. About seven years ago I served as it’s Security Chief for a couple of years, she was a little less beat up but otherwise, things haven’t changed much, without a full crew compliment she’s a bit emptier than most ships her class, Engineering does what they can to keep her together. Most of the Senior staff are recent additions, including myself. Commander Akorem served under the previous Captain” He didn’t show any outward expression but his tone was a little sharper when mentioning the XO “His son lives with him, he’s a capable officer” It was all he had to say on that matter

“Your fellow department heads I don’t know much personally. Chief Stone is a Lifer, sense of humour and a very… Sunny disposition, far as I can tell his staff likes him and he keeps the ship together. He’s also loyal to his crew and protective of his staff, don’t tell him but I kind of like that about him” He paused and stopped for a moment, placed a large hand gently on Wells’ arm “One of his staff, a Half Catian Ensign. I’d avoid all contact with her” He let the man go and continued on their walk.

“Our Security Chief Mackenzie, he’s new so I haven’t had time to get to know him properly, so far he seems to be a competent chief although he has a somewhat unorthodox skill set.” He smiled a little “If you see a winged woman in a Security uniform just identify yourself and try not to get on her bad side” He said rather fondly.

“The medical department is in a bit of flux right now, Doctor Harrington is the seniormost officer right now but he’s not Chief, at least not yet.” Peter said in a neutral tone.

“Last but no least Captain Ravenfall. Tough, good at her job.” He hesitated “She has a tendency to get herself in some trouble occasionally but Captaining this boat has that effect on people. Oh and she has some private medical problems she sometimes needs to deal with, I’d advise against asking about it. But if you’re ever curious she’ll explain.” He gave a brief smile “Any questions?” He asked.
