--------------- NINE YEARS AGO - USS. RAFAEL ---------------------

“Dr there’s a transmission comming in for you. They said it was urgent.”

David glanced upwards from his pile of reports. “Thank you,” he said pushing the reports to the side and turning towards his computer. “Can you patch it through for me?” The Ensign nodded and left. A couple of minutes later his computer beeped and the logo for Starfleet Acadamy. His eyebrows knotted together as he frowned. He had expected his parents or something, but not the Acadamy. He didn’t have many correlations with the Acadamy and couldn’t see why they would be calling except… his stomache did a back flip. No, don’t think that he thought firmly to himself she’s fine.

Swallowing the cold feeling that washed over him, despite his reassurances to himself, David accepted the call. Immediately two people appeared, one familiar and another David didn’t recognise. The person who appeared, was not an Admiral, the headmaster or Acadamy CMO. Nor was it his sister. Rather the familiar pinned back brown hair of the Acadamy Counsellor. Trying to appear as calm as he could David leaned back in his seat and smiled, “Counsellor Ashurst, to what do I owe the pleasure?”

The older woman smiled, her eyes taking in the pips on his collar, a few more than the last time she’d seen him. “Congratulations on your promotion Lieutenant, and a CMO already at your age. Your parents must be proud.”

“They are,” David smiled, “They are still hoping that I will become a younger Captain than Kirk,”

“Well at this rate, you definitely could be,” Ashursts smile widened, “It’s good to see your doing well,” the her smile fell and she sighed. “This isn’t just a curtesy call…”

Davids heart rate seemed to escualte, and it took all his effort to keep his face a perfectly schooled calm. Sensing this was the turning point in the conversation wild thoughts streamed through his head, all the worst case scenarios that popped into his head. Especially with the face of the man at the back of the screen, who still hadn’t been introduced yet. Bree always had a way of finding trouble, just please don’t have got yourself killed Bree he begged internally please don’t let it be bad.

”… This is Sargent Shrimpton, he’s with the local police department. It’s seems your sister got into a bar fight last night and they need you to identify her so they can make a formal I.D.”

A sudden tirade of images flashed before Davids eyes. Then he was suddenly standing there in the cell, his sister slumped on the ground, one arm protectively curled over the gash on her arm. When he crouched down next to her and tilted her head a little, he could see her eyes were swollen shut, and a trickle of blood slipped out from under her hair line. “Why is she like this? Why haven’t you moved her?” he demanded glearing at the Sargent.

“She wouldn’t comply with the police,” the Sargent replied, in a chant-like manner, “She wouldn’t sign the forms.”

Something wasn’t right… this wasn’t how anything was supposed to go. Bree never died that day. Briar Harrington wasn’t dead. “Davieee,” Bree moaned, her bloodied hand grabbed his arm, “Let me go,” as he watched her body seemed to get younger and younger, yet the injuries didn’t disappear. David gripped her tighter, unsure just what was happening. “It’s clear I’m nothing but a thorn in your side. Captain.” she spat.

“You know that’s not true,” David argued trying to grab her tighter. To hold her and let her know he was there. He always had been. But his hands grasped at air. Briar (Harry) Harrington had disappeared but her voice seemed to swirl around David calling for her big brother to save her…

--------------- PRESENT DAY - USS. VIKING ---------------------

David sat up suddenly gasping for air. His nightclothes were soaked in sweat and he shivered when they made contact with the air. A dream. It had just been a dream. He knelt over one hand clutched to his cheast as if to stop his racing heart as he panted. His breath sounded loud in the empty room. A memory that had turned into a nightmare. He’d been called back to earth that day to confirm her identity not identify her dead body. She had refused to co-operate with the police. She wouldn’t give them her name, address, accept medical treatment or make a statement. Because of that they had to release her into the custody of a relative or her emergency contact. Somehow they had figured out she was from the Acadamy and through them, tracked down him.

She could have died that day. She’d picked a fight with a Klingon gang for some reason or another. But when David had shown up, she had been fine. Tired, indignant, a little worse for the wear with ablack eye, and a nasty gash on her arm, but fine. He’d been furious with her. He had been terrifed when he’d recieved the transmission from the Counsellor and the Police Officer, and seeing her hadn’t settled his fears. He couldn’t understand why she would have such a disregard for her own safety. Why she wouldn’t accept medical attention or talk to anyone. His fear had come through as anger as he’d yelled at her tried to force her to get medical attention until she had done as she did and pushed him away.

David shivered. The sweat on his skin had cooled and now his nightware clung to him uncomfortably. Slowly getting up he brushed off a few tears. Almost mechanically he showered, got changed and took the sheets off his bed. Even though it wasn’t his shift he shuffled tiredly into sickbay. He wasn’t going to be able to sleep for the next few hours so he may as well start working. With such a small staff there was always work to be done.

Sickbay was quiet when he entered. Once upon a time the bustling sounds of Sickbay had been something he had looked forward to every day. But now he found that it’s quiet was the perfect oppertunity for him to think. He set about prepping the hyposprays for the next shift. The familiar work giving him something to focus on, where for a few moments he could forget about his sister. Or that he was on the ship that had lost her.

Dr Harrington

As Harrington cleaned the last surgical device and put it neatly back in it’s spot, he took a moment to rub at his eyes. There had been few interuptions but the work had given his racing heart and mind time to settle. Now the fatigue had begun to settle back in and he yawned. He should go back to his quarters and get some rest, but he didn’t want to. He didn’t want to face the empty room and wonder if it had been where Harry had lived before her promotions. He didn’t want to be reminded of the past.

He sat down on one of the biobeds and closed his eyes, thinking. More and more his thoughts seemed to turn his sisters way; he should probably go back and talk to the Counselor again. He should… almost unconsiously he lay back on the bed and stared at the ceiling. What he really needed was some sleep. His eyes closed, before slowly opening again. Surly it wouldn’t hurt to have a quick nap here, there was no-one around and he’d be right there if someone needed him urgently. He blinked slowly, knowing already that if he’d wanted to win the battle with his fatigue he should never have sat down. No, a nap wouldn’t hurt. He’d only be asleep for an hour, two tops. He was only resting his eyes…

Dr Harrington

That’s when the mischievous Cerenity found him. “ Doctor are you ok” she asked. She had a pice of paper in her hand and was hovering next to him. “ Doctor are you sick when I’m sick mom make soup I can ask her to make some for you” she said.
Cerenity

David’s eyes shot open, feeling like he had just stepped under a freezing cold waterfall. He blinked for a moment realising there was no medical emergency. When it finally register it was just Cerenity his mouth twitched at his own silliness, “No, thank you.” he said, “I’m not sick, just a little tired.” he smiled gently and pointed at the piece of paper in her hand. “What have you got there?”

Dr Harrington

“It’s for you” she said and handed him the paper. On the paper was a drowning of his sister. It was pretty clear that it was made by a three year old but the hair eye and clothing color matched what his sister would have had when she disappeared.
Cerenity

David stiffened, while Harry’s eye colour and clothing colour was fairly easy to guess as Harry and David had the exact same eyes, and Harry always wore blue even off duty, he was thrown by how accurate Cerenity had made Harrys hair colour, right down to the exact shade of brown. Paired with everything else it was enough to throw him off. By his calculations Cerenity was to young to have known Harry, so how had she got it so accurate?

Comming out of his thoughts David smiled, “Wow! This looks just like my sister.” he said. “Thank you Cerenity, it’s a beautiful drawing.”

Dr Harrington

“ thank you I found a picture of her on the computer” she said smiling.
Cerenity.

David nodded, feeling a little foolish that he had become so easily paranoid. This ship was obviously getting to him more than he would care to admit. Pushing that aside, he focused his attention back on the little girl before him. “I think a drawing that good deserves a treat don’t you?”
He stood up from the biobed and headed to the lolly jars that they doctors occasionally had on hand for the children they treated. “What do you want? We’ve got black balls, chocolate fish, Bajoran toffee…” he trailed off, squiting as he tried to read the writing that had faded off.”

Dr Harrington

“ No thank you I thought it would help you feel better. You really don’t look ok are you sure your not sick” she asked as she fallowed him. Cerenity had a very concerned look on her face.
Cerenity

David rubbed his face again, wondering how bad did he look to have Cerenity worried. “I’m just tired,” he said to reassure her which was mostly the truth. How could anyone get a moments sleep, when he was being haunted by the computure in his room. He’d failed Harry, and the reminders were everywhere aboard the ship.

“Are you sick?” he asked, suddenly wondering why the child was in Sickbay by herself.

Dr Harrington

“ I came to give you that picture mommy says you miss your sister. I thought it would make you feel better. What is having a sister like” serenity asked. She smiled sweetly at him. She had no siblings and given Luna’s paranoia it was likely that she would never have siblings. Though Luna had good reason for being paranoid and not wanting a child in the first place but that was something the three year old did not understand.

“Having a sister is the best,” David looked wistful, “You have someone to play with all the time, and someone who you look out for and who would look out for you no matter what. Bree used to follow me around all the time when she was little, we’d play space battles and she would always come to my rescue against the bad alien ships that wanted to destroy mine. When I went away to the acadamy she would always be the first to welcome me home with a great big hug,” He smiled sadly. A stab of loss hitting him in the heart. All of that was gone now, had disappeared years before Harry had made it to the Acadamy and now it was gone forever. Unless Harry came home, he would never have a moment like those again.

“ mommy said I can’t have a sister your lucky to have one” she said with a smile. The way she spoke about Harry made it seem like she was alive.
Though it was likely that she did not yet understand the concept of death or perhaps she know something that adults did not.

Serenity blinked suddenly starting at a corner behind the doctor. “ you leave him alone” she screamed. She suddenly Burt into tears. “ Docter there going to hurt you” she cryed poing at the corner. She then went back in to screaming at the corner. “ I won’t let you hurt him”
Cerenity

Bump

Tath walked into sickbay, heading to his new office, when he heard the screaming. “Is everything ok?” He asked.
Lt. Sharvi
CMO

“There trying to take Doctor” the child cryed. She pointed at a dark corner that was clearly empty.
Cerenity

“No one is trying to harm me Cerenity,” David rushed to sooth, crouching down and gathering the little girl into his arms. “Feel that, I’m right here. Everything is alright.” Gently he rubbed the childs back as she cried.

He glanced up at the CMO, “We were just talking about my sister, when she suddenly started screaming at the corner saying that she wasn’t going to let it take me.” He sighed, “Briar’s been missing for a few years now, I didn’t think Cerenity knew that but maybe she does. Maybe just talking about her put some wild ideas into Cerenity’s head, and she thinks the shadows are going to take me too.” David shook his head, he shuddered to think of all the horific things the child might have seen on a haunted ship such as the Viking.

Dr Harrington

Cerenity garbed David shirt tightly practically barring her fave into his chest.” They are real they took daddy, and Captain Kara and your sister they will hurt everyone on the ship” she cryed. There was a few moment of just crying before she added. “ why don’t you believe me not you or mommy “ she wimpier.
Cerenity
