Return to the Kirn System

Posted April 26, 2021, 12:06 p.m. by Lieutenant Commander Ander Garay (Chief Engineer) (Jared Kurz)

‘Space, the so called “final frontier,”’ Ander mused as the freighter lumbered toward Starbase 842 in the Kirn system. The stars streaking passed the window used to give him great joy, but now he looked at the blackness between them with apprehension. He hadn’t been out in deep space for eight years. And oddly, his new orders were taking him back to the scene of his last action: the Kirn system. Home of the Quirst-Litt wormhole, which had been sealed by the USS Curie to prevent the aggressive Bat’Leth people from attacking the Federation. He frowned slightly as he considered the real purpose behind the construction of Starbase 842. It was probably there to guard to aperture, just in case the Bat’Leth found some way to reopen the passage. But that still didn’t explain why he was being shipped out there.

He turned from the window and continued walking down the corridor. The memories that flooded his mind were bittersweet. His last ship had been the USS Thor, under Captain Jessip Quirst. He’d lost touch with the Captain years ago, as their careers had taken them in very different directions. Jessip had gone on to command a destroyer, while Ander had been reassigned to the shipyard at Utopia Planitia. It had turned out to be a dream assignment for Ander, and he had thrived under the challenges constructing and overhauling starships had given him. He had done so well he’d been transferred to the shipyards at Phardos, where he’d worked on several important development projects for the advanced starship design bureau.

The new fleet program had turned starfleet into a lean, balanced force through the efforts of people like him. He had just completed a performance review and was informed by his CO that he was being considered for promotion. The dockmaster post at Phardos was open, and his hard work had earned him the recognition to be given it. So why was he now being sent to the backside of nowhere? The very fringe of known space? He walked faster, letting his boots pound the decking as he worked off the wave of frustration that washed over him. He still couldn’t figure out what he’d done, or whom he had offended. Hopefully the answers would be on the starbase when he arrived…
