‘Space, the so called “final frontier,”’ Ander mused as the freighter lumbered toward Starbase 842 in the Kirn system. The stars streaking passed the window used to give him great joy, but now he looked at the blackness between them with apprehension. He hadn’t been out in deep space for eight years. And oddly, his new orders were taking him back to the scene of his last action: the Kirn system. Home of the Quirst-Litt wormhole, which had been sealed by the USS Curie to prevent the aggressive Bat’Leth people from attacking the Federation. He frowned slightly as he considered the real purpose behind the construction of Starbase 842. It was probably there to guard to aperture, just in case the Bat’Leth found some way to reopen the passage. But that still didn’t explain why he was being shipped out there.

He turned from the window and continued walking down the corridor. The memories that flooded his mind were bittersweet. His last ship had been the USS Thor, under Captain Jessip Quirst. He’d lost touch with the Captain years ago, as their careers had taken them in very different directions. Jessip had gone on to command a destroyer, while Ander had been reassigned to the shipyard at Utopia Planitia. It had turned out to be a dream assignment for Ander, and he had thrived under the challenges constructing and overhauling starships had given him. He had done so well he’d been transferred to the shipyards at Phardos, where he’d worked on several important development projects for the advanced starship design bureau.

The new fleet program had turned starfleet into a lean, balanced force through the efforts of people like him. He had just completed a performance review and was informed by his CO that he was being considered for promotion. The dockmaster post at Phardos was open, and his hard work had earned him the recognition to be given it. So why was he now being sent to the backside of nowhere? The very fringe of known space? He walked faster, letting his boots pound the decking as he worked off the wave of frustration that washed over him. He still couldn’t figure out what he’d done, or whom he had offended. Hopefully the answers would be on the starbase when he arrived…

The freighter docked with the station and Ander walked through the connecting tunnel to the concourse. It had been eight years since he last set foot on these floors, and the station really hadn’t changed much in that time. If anything, it was quieter than he remembered. Starbase 842 really was the backwater of the Federation. Far from the action, and far from anything interesting if you ignored the ghosts. So what the devil was he doing here?! He glanced at the PADD that contained his orders:
‘Report to Starbase 842 for reassignment with all dispatch. Dr.1.’
Well, he was here. But the orders were frustratingly vague. He walked over to a comm panel.
“Computer, this is Lieutenant Commander Ander Garay.”
=/\= Welcome to Starbase 842. =/\=
“Transfer number 0189 00 O145-9 checking in.” The display showed his transfer number, but then turned red.
=/\= There is no record of your transfer number. Unable to proceed with your request. =/\= Ander held up his PADD and compared the numbers to those on the display, confirming that the computer had registered it correctly.
“Then what am I doing here?” He asked in frustration.
=/\= Unknown. Please contact station administration. =/\=
“Contact the administrator,” he said.
=/\= Station administrator Alvaraz is currently in a meeting. Please try again later. =/\= Ander breathed an exasperated sigh, then turned and continued to walk along the concourse. At the minimum he could at least find something to eat.
