Aihia tapped her fingers against the hard surface of her desk, dark eyes staring down at her nails as she did so. It had been sad to see her Excutive Officer leave the ship, but she knew it was the best choice for him, wherever his adventures would take him. It would take a moment to get things back into order, and that meant going as soon as possible. Without an XO or a CE, she needed to fill those roles as soon as possible, so the command did not break in its wake.

She had spent the last several hours going through different officers to see who might be equipped for the job of the Chief Engineer. Of all the officers aboard the ship, only one stood out. And in the end, that seemed to be the best choice.

=^=Aihia to Ensign Argeneau; report to my ready room as soon as convenient.=^=

=^= Ensign Argeneau here, on my way captain.=^= Heather said making her way to the first turbolift that would take her to the bridge and then walked through the captain’s ready room. Once outside the door, she hit the chime to let the Captain know she was there.

Heather Argeneau, Ens.

“Come in!” Came the gruff voice of the Romulan woman. When Heather entered, she would find Auhia standing beside the window, a cup of tea in her hands. Her posture was lenient, allowing herself the pleasntry of comfort, long hair falling in a standard do. Quietly, she stood watching the stars as they leisurely moved past Dauntless.

Heather did enter, “You wished to see me, captain? I was on my way to see Si’Rek when you called, I remembered something from when I was working on the diplomatic quarters.” She said softly coming to attention.

Heather Argeneau, Ens.

“Yes. Please, have a seat, Ensign.” The Captain waved her hand towards a chair situated across from her desk. “Good news, I hope?” She inquired, although such a topic was clearly not the reason she had sent for the Ensign.

Heather took the offered seat, “Well, I remembered something I remember a human man, blond, average height, pips were on the wrong side.” Heather said thankful to finally report that. She had been on her way to do just that when the Captain called her to her office.

“Alas, it is the small things that get people snatched.” Aihia tapped her fingers against her thigh, “Although, I regret to inform you, Commander Si’Rek will not be on board to receive such a report.” Turning from the window, she sauntered over to the desk, leisurely taking a seat behind it. “He has taken up a position elsewhere, hence the meaning behind our meeting today, Miss Argeneau.”

Heather’s eyes widened at this, after all the flake he gave her for leaving the ship when she’d only just arrived he takes a new position and abandons the Dauntless. “I guess congrats are in order.” She said though hide the hurt that he hadn’t said goodbye to her. However, he was also the only one that knew her secret on the ship. No one else knew what she really was or her abilities.

Heather Argeneau, Ens.

“I suppose you are correct, Ensign.” Aihia offered a somewhat labored smile. She found a sense of pain behind the idea of her trusted executive and a close friend leaving the ship, but she was no fool to believe Heather did not feel the same. “While I scavenge for the looks of a new Executive Officer, I need someone I can rely on at the head of Engineering. You are one of the brightest engineers I know, Argeneau,” She leaned down, removing a black box from with a drawer of her desk. Setting it down, she pulled it open. “I would be honored to have you as my Chief Engineer, Lieutenant Argeneau.” Lt. JG pips rested before her.

Heather looked genuinely surprised by this. “Unfortunately, I cannot possibly accept your generous promotion without explaining a few things to you first,” Heather said. “There are a few things that you don’t know about me that aren’t in my file for a reason. the only person on this ship that did know about this was Si’Rek because he knew my uncle. First I am not El’Aurian as my file says, I’m Atlantean, my family dates back to before the fall of the Lost city of Atlantis. Our Scientists were rather advanced compared to our advancements here, though even they did not reach the stars. Rather they worked with bioengineering and mixed nanite technology to create little Nanos that could go into the bloodstream to repair the human body. Only they worked too well repairing the damage of everyday life, pollution, sunlight, age even. Over the centuries, humans have come to call us Vampires. My elders perfer the term Immortal though.” Heather told her captain waiting to see how the woman would accept this information. that would tell her if she could remain and accept the CEO’s position or transfer from this ship to another.

Aihia did not show a look of surprise, as one might have expected her to. Instead, she slowly lowered herself back into a sitting position, tapping her fingers against the hard surface of her desk, in contemplation. Ael was the kind of woman who despised liars; she could not stand when something of significance was hidden from her or if someone told her a fact far from the truth. Thus, Heather’s revelation came as a hard hit for the Captain, but she did not show it. “Why didn’t you say something when we first met, Ensign?” She inquired, softly, recalling when she had been the XO of the ship, rather than its CO. “I am not angry with you, only disappointed you had not come to me sooner about this.” Pinching the bridge of her nose, she reached over to take a sip of her coffee, which had grown cold.

She knew she had disappointed her CO, however, if she were, to be honest, she had figured on some kind of fear as well. Besides there were laws her people had to live by one such law was hide and blend in. “I was raised since I was a child, to not reveal who or what I was or put my whole family at risk, brother’s, sisters, parents, aunts, and uncles, even grandparents would be at risk. I mean do you know what humans would do if they learned that there is a creature living that needs to feed off blood even if we do not regularly feed off humans. My uncle is as old as the stories of Atlantis and he enforces our laws which I’m breaking just by telling you who I really am.” Heather explained. Hiding who she was, was not a choice it was a way of life. “I mean honestly the normal reaction is fear if you did not fear me you would want to harvest my blood so as to find youth again. it’s not fun living well past the age most humans live.” She sighed and shook her head.

Heather Argeneau, Ens.

“I do not fear you, nor do I give a damn about whatever agents are in your blood responsible for your immortality. What I care about is your health aboard this ship, Ensign. What if you had gotten hurt? What if for some unknown reason, you needed a blood transfusion? We need to know these things. Even the slightest difference in physiology means life or death. And quite frankly, I’m not willing to risk that on the laws of your people. I understand why you didn’t tell me, I get it– I do. But sometimes, there are just things your superiors need to know.” Aihia sighed, running a hand through her hair.

“If I had gotten hurt, I would have hidden it,” Heather said quite simply. “Since I wasn’t your CE there wasn’t any risk of my going on an away team to be detected. Which means I wasn’t at risk. I apologize for not telling you sooner, but it means death by my own people to reveal what I am. because it risks the safety of my people to be hunted again if we’re found out. That is why I did not tell you until now. Si’Rek was my only protection on this ship, now that he is not here that protection is gone and telling you risks everything my safety, my life, and my family.” She told the Captain honestly. “Thankfully not from you, but there is still your crew we do not know how they will react if they learn there is a ‘vampire’ on your ship. Just because humans are enlightened enough to welcome alien cultures, does not mean they still do not fear something as unknown as an immortal being that cannot let anyone have their blood on file. Which by the way my blood can never be on file. ‘If’ I need a blood transfusion any human blood will do. Though I do hope no one comes after me with a Stake now that I’ve clued you into who I am,” Heather said only half joking. She understood what her Captain was trying to say, unfortunately, Heather had 268 years of someone drilling into her that she cannot reveal who she was to anyone outside the family except for her lifemate and even then it was still a risk. The captain here definitely wasn’t her lifemate and Heather had been keeping a slight tether to the good Captain’s thoughts to see if she really was unafraid of leaning that the Officer she had just offered the Chief position in Engineering to was an immortal or blood sucking vampire who needs the blood to survive.

Fear. There wasn’t a trace of it. Raised a Romulan, Aihia was subject to more fear in a single day than most would experience in their childhood. It was her father’s mechanism of ensuring her loyalty to the Empire, a practice he followed with an iron fist. He was a true Romulan believe, a truly loyal soldier, but his daughter never was.. she never could be, the human in her blood making it almost impossible for her to ever kill another. And for years he tried to beat it out of her, rid her of that patheticness– that weaknesses. But it worked only to teach her that fear, in whatever form it took, was futile. “I should doubt anyone on this ship would have the tenacity to attack a department head, Miss Argeneau.” Aihia informed, leaning back in her chair. “This ship, and its crew, they’re indifferent, they have no idea. And I’m not about to spread this information, it is more drama than one ship can handle.” Ael brushed her fingers along the rim of the box. “I don’t fancy lies or secrets between my crew and I, and especially not between my department heads. If there is something that is of importance, never hesitate to tell me, even if you think it will be devastating. Honesty is a weapon in this world, Heather, and I expect my department heads to use it wisely. So, if you can promise this will be the last time you withhold something of this significance from me, the position is yours. But I don’t want any shadows, all right?”

Heather watched the woman very closely. Her feelings and thoughts were just that fear free. Heather saw no need to wipe the conversation from the Captain’s mind and request a transfer of ships. “I can assure you Captain that that is my only secret and with the offer of the Department Head position it was something I needed to advice you on. I assure you this is not something I want to hide, it is out of necessity that I did hide it.” She said honestly. “If the offer still stands I accept the promotion to Engineering Chief.” Heather said softly.
