As Esther took her first steps aboard the Dauntless, she couldn’t help but smile in satisfaction. There was something just right about being on board a ship. It didn’t matter what ship she happened to be on, ships were home and after spending 18 hours on a shuttle craft just to Rendevous with the Dauntless she was more than relieved to be back in one again. Shuttlecrafts just weren’t the same, and she doubted she would ever really feel comfortable being on one. She prefered the larger, and more secure space of a larger vessal.

To save time she decided to make her way to the CO’s office to report in first, quickly adopting a confident gait. She had no idea where she was going, but she knew where she wanted to go, and for someone who’d lived on ships for as long as she’d been breathing it was essentially the same thing.

As she passed through the Command Center her keen eyes sought out the science consol that would be her bridge position. She walked with purpose, heading for the door that would typically lead to the CO’s ready room. Straightining the collar of her uniform she reached out and pressed the buzzer.

“Come in!” A sharp voice commanded from within. The doors subsequently hissed open, revealing a quaint albeit notable readyroom– to be expected of a ship of Dauntless’ purpose and size. Standard for Starfleet, the readyroom presented itself in a single lair, where a small sofa was pushed to a kitty corner, a coffee table set before it. To the back of the room, beyond a large window that overlooked the stars as they hastily passed by, lay a desk with two accompanied chairs. The main display was situated behind the desk, currently showing the intricate schematics of a Mjolnir-class cruiser. Beyond what was Starfleet issue, the Captain littered several hints to her nature through the Romulan artifacts which popped up from place to place.

Esther’d heard that her Captain was Romulan when she’d accepted the position, and even with time to prepare herself she still didn’t know what to make of it. So rather than stare at the Romulan artifacts like she wanted to do, she shifted her eyes away from them quickly seeking their owner, the Captain…

The woman dressed in that red uniform, however, was anything but Starfleet issue. Broad shouldered and taller than most men, Aihia was a force to be reckoned with. Dark, steel grey eyes seemed to scrutinize every detail of a person, with an attitude that could make a Klingon look kind. Deep brown hair was pulled into a standard do, revealing pointed ears and the faintest precense of a ‘v’ upon her forehead. She was no diminutive figure, not in appearance nor personality.

“Lieutenant Prinz.” Aihia greeted, her voice accented with a slightly alien air. “Welcome to the Dauntless,” She made her way towards the woman, offering a calloused hand in welcome. “I am Captain Ael Aihia; you must be our new Science Chief.”

The Lieutenant was consdierably shorter than the Captain, although next to any other woman she would have been a typical height. She had all the typical ridges of a Bajoran and the earring to match. She was dressed in the typical blue uniform of the science/medical departments. Her hair was kept short in a way that could almost be considered masculine at least by human standards. Her most notable feature was possible the earpiece in her scarred ear.

“Lieutenant Prinz,” The Science officer nodded, giving the Captains hand a firm shake, noting the Aihia’s much larger shape, she seemed to draw herself up a bit more, as if to make herself look less small. “And thank you Captain it’s good to be on a ship again,”

Aihia made brief note of the earring, the faintest of smirks dancing across her lips. She always appreciated someone who embraced their culture, even if in doing so, they were outside of standard regulation. Although, Ael had never been particularly strict in regards to cultural wear, respecting the need to hold one’s people close.

“It is good to have you, Lieutenant.” Aihia returned, gesturing for Prinz to take a seat. “Care for a drink, Prinz?” She inquired, stepping over to the replicator, a slight question in her raised eyebrow.

“Ginger tea,” Prinz said as she made herself comfortable in the indicated seat.

“A fine choice,” Aihia expressed her approval, replicating two mugs of ginger tea, one with a teaspoon of honey. Making her way over, she set the tea in front of Prinz, rounding the desk.

“Judging by your file, you seem to be a competent scientist; I expect nothing less from my Chief.” Aihia hummed, taking a seat across from Prinz. “Alas, a file is only the formal information. Tell me about your experiences as a scientist,” Ael knew the information of a file to be useful. Albeit, it was always fruitful to hear the data from the person’s own tongue. In a way, it made it authentic.

Esther leaned back in her chair and let out a low whistle, as she thought how best to answer. “Well I was offered a place in the Science Acadamy of Bajor, but turned it down for Starfleet, although you probably already know that. My primary sciences are meteorology and astrology but I have experience in astrophysics from my time on the Emissary which was a Bajoran/Starfleet charter. My personal philosophy when approaching science is to eliminate the impossible until whatever remains, however improbable must be the truth.” She quoted and shrugged, “My father was a fan of Sherlock Holms, he used to quote the phrase to me all the time as a child. I didn’t even realise it was from a fictional character until I was at the Acadamy.”

“A wise philosophy to go by. I daresay that is the purpose of the scientific method, eliminating that which is improbable. Quite frankly, I come from the security department, so I cannot promise I will understand all of your scientific ramblings.” Aihia smirked a tad, “So, you might have to dumb a few things down here and there, but I’ll do my best to do some research beforehand.” It was only partially obvious that Ael was being frivolous with her words. Taking a sip of the tea, she held a quiet for a moment before setting the mug on the table. “What would you say was the most defining experience you have had as a scientist?” Truthfully, she just wanted to know more about who this officer was.

“Us scientists have a tendancy to ramble,” Esther smirked, “But I’ll try to remember to keep it understandable for the future,” She was loath to say that she would ‘dumb it down’ for the Captain, even if the Captain had more or less used the same words herself. Leaning back in her chair she grabbed a hold of her cup and took a sip. “Defining me as a Scientist or a person? she asked raising an eyebrow, her face pulled in concentration as her brain searched for an incident, “I think my first year of the Acadamy, oddly enough. It was a rough year for me academically. I was used to being top and all of a sudden I was mediocre and it threw me off badly. But I grew from it, both as a Scientist and as a person. I didn’t realise how much I used my competitive streak with Marco to motivate myself when I should have been focused on using my studies to compete against myself. I think that’s why I like Science, because you’ll never be able to know anything. There’s an infinate number of possibilities to explore. It was a lesson I learned the hard way, but as I’ve gotten older I’m slowly realising that our best lessons are learnt through failure.”
