Heather finished her rotation in Engineering, made sure assignments were handed out and all from outside the office that had only recently belonged to her chief Si’Rek, She just wasn’t ready to sit in his chair and his office so soon after learning he’d left without so much as a goodbye to her. Heather made a stop off at her quarters, the Captain knew what she was exactly and before the young immortal was going to sit down with her captain for a nice dinner Heather was going to have a bag of blood. She hadn’t had anything to eat since she accepted the post, and she’d last had blood the day before. This meant her body had run through the blood she’d consumed.

Getting in a quick sonar shower and a change of clothing a bag of blood slapped to her fangs drained rather quickly. The food would help her body produce its own blood, but until then at least one bag would satisfy her. Once dressed and slightly fed Heather left her quarters and found the first lift to the decks above her. the young woman stepped off the lift and made her way to the captain’s quarters where she then pressed the chime at exactly 1800 hours and waited for entrance to be offered.

Ael had never been much of a woman to replicate dinners, whenever she had the chance not to. In lieu of dealing with the machinery she was quite certain had a grudge against her, she stood at the counter chopping up a wide variety of vegetables to add into the wraps she was making. The vibrant yellows and reds and oranges of the bell peppers would give a crisp twist to the prominent greens of the cucumber, green onion, spinach and wide assortment of other vegetables. Setting them aside, she set out the wraps, first brushing a light chipotle sauce across them, before adding in the vegetables. Uncertain if Heather preferred meat or not, as Aihia rarely did, she left it to the side, until Heather arrived.

About to check on the sweet potato soup, she heard the sound of the chime. Raising an eyebrow, she quickly made her way to the door, brushing off her clothes, in case she had gotten anything on them. For a second, she smirked at the thought of how Heather might react to her cooking, but she pushed that thought away, standing beside the threshold of the door, as it slid open. “Hello,” Ael waved, gesturing for Heather to step inside. “Welcome to my humble abode,” There was sarcasm in her voice.

Heather smiled, she couldn’t help it at the sarcastic tone, “It’s nice for fleet issued quarters.” Heather smirked back, “And judging by the smell your definitely an amazing cook.” Heather said as she entered her Captain’s quarters. She took a quick look around before turning to face her Captain, “What’s on the menu?” She asked with a soft smile catching a hint of Sweet potato soup even from this distance.

Her quarters were most certainly eccentric. Artifacts lined the walls, dancing across a few shelves, each of Romulan descent. Despite her position in Starfleet, Aihia still embraced her connection to her people. Smiling, she shook her head. “Nice is an overstatement,” She razzed, although it were better than any Romulan Military issued quarters. “Vegetables wraps– with grilled chicken if you’d like, and sweet potato soup.” She informed, beckoning Heather over to the communal area of the quarters.

Heather smiled, “Smells delicious, I’ll take mine with chicken.” She grinned definitely a meat eater. though she loved veggies too. Normally her kind slowly stop eating. They get to the point where eating becomes an inconvenience. Technically they did not need to eat, because blood gives them all the nutrients they could need. Eating does build their own supply of blood even if it is not enough to take care of the Nanites moving through their system keeping them young. Her uncle Lucien had been raised in a time of warriors so to maintain his warrior physique he never stopped eating food. Her Great Uncle Lucian, however, had. Heather still smiled over the stories her Great Aunt told of how Lucian had brought her Alpo dog food the first time he made her something to eat just after she had been turned. “It smells absolutely delicious Captain.” Heather said turning to the captain with a smile more to the memory than the food and the dinner with Captain.

“Meat it is, Argeneau.” Aihia smiled over to her. The Captain was not used to spending time with anyone, most of her downtime spent in solitude, so she hoped she was doing this right. There came a point in every officer’s life, regardless of their rank or age, when they realize they had focussed too much on work and needed to breathe. Aihia was at that point in her life; she knew so much about Starfleet and had more than her share of experience with it, she knew her crew by their files.. but she didn’t know them as people. And in her eyes, that was a problem. Aihia’s father had always been strict about never getting close to a subordinate, he would shun them and make certain they knew they were beneath him. Hell, sometimes he didn’t even know their name. Ael did not want to be that way– she vowed she would never become her father. Yet with the way she was carrying about, she was following his footsteps. “You don’t have to call me Captain,” She shook her head. “Aihia will do.. or Ael, if you please.” Aihia felt awkward giving her first name, especially to anyone who wasn’t family. However, she figured she would just have to get over that.

Heather looked around as she followed her captain into the quarters, to her it looked very sparse, not a lot of personal effects, but there were some things that made her think that the Captain was human. Or Romulan as the case may be. “As you wish Aihia if you don’t mind my asking are those from your own archeological digs? or collected from other’s digs?” She asked as she moved to look at the shelf of artifacts.

Heather was not wrong.. in either assumption, although most people were unaware of her hybrid nature; a secret she held close to her chest. For a woman whose attitude was generally the most prevalent thing about her, she seemed awfully friendly this evening, but that might change if anyone chose to point it out. “Both, actually. When I was an Ensign aboard the Enigma -an exo-archaeological science vessel- the Captain made it a point for everyone, even security officers, to have training in he excavation and handling of fragile artifacts. My squad was assigned to the excavation on Belturan VI; managing not to completely destroy what we had uncovered, the science officers allowed us to keep one of the artifacts we discovered.” She nodded, “The others are all from my mother’s work as an archaeologist.”

“You have nice collection.” Heather said honestly, “Your mother must be proud.” She said softly wondering what her parents would think of her join a Federation starship? She turned to face her captain deciding not to think further on what her family will think Heather hadn’t exactly talked to them since returning to the ship after her Great Uncle had tried to control her career choices and she like her mother before her stood up to him.

Aihia only chuckled, “Perhaps.” She had not spoken to either of her parents since her choice to join Starfleet, now fifteen years ago. Her father, an esteemed Romulan soldier, did not believe in Starfleet and found it was a coalition of pathetic individuals representing the weakness of their species. Although her mother did not share the same biased views, her devotion to Aihia’s father made it difficult for her to reach out to Ael, knowing the tumultuous waters between her child and her husband. “What of you?” Aihia changed the subject, “I’m sure your parents must be proud of your accomplishments as an engineer.”

Heather sighed sensing there was more to Ael’s story but she wished to change from talking about herself to Heather. “Actually, they aren’t really happy with me joining Starfleet, though maybe not for the same reason as your parents. They are proud that I followed my heart when they thought I was following in my father’s footsteps, but they aren’t happy with how I went about it. When I left here with my Uncle it took a lot of convincing to get them to let me return. You have no idea how hard it is to teach a 2000-year-old immortal to let you live your life. My uncle was the hardest to convince it was my grandmother Margarita who managed to convince him that if he tried to deny me I would more than likely leave and never come back then his favorite niece my mother wouldn’t talk to him ever again.” Heather laughed at it really. “My grandmother has always been my greatest supporter other than my cousin Thomas. They were the only two who knew I had enlisted.” She smirked.

Heather Argeneau, Ce

“Your grandmother sounds to be a strong and powerful woman. She seems, without doubt, a valuable asset to have in your corner.” Aihia smiled, heading into the kitchen to finish up the wraps. Beckoning Heather to follow, she gestured to the nearby table, should she prefer to take a seat. “Family can sometimes prove difficult, especially when your views do not mesh with their own. Although, I suppose it is greater a concern the love they hold for you, rather than how agreeable they are to your wishes. Two thousand years.. you would think a family with such age would be closer knit than anyone else. Then again, if we look at the gods of various religions, that isn’t always the case.” She remarked, “Do you still have contact with your grandmother and Thomas?”

Heather followed her with a smile. “Actually you’d be surprised how close we really are. My Uncle Lucian was the only one that use to keep everyone at arm’s length then he met his lifemate Leigh and he seemed to change he became warmer and closer to his family. She gave him something he never thought he’d have again after losing his wife and twin daughters when Atlantis fell below the waters of the earth. She gave him love and a family of his own again. My family is just afraid that my being on a starship will expose what we really are, it’s why my bio says El’Aurian rather than Atlantean.” Heather shrugged and laughed at the thought of her grandmother. “For someone that’s 1200 years old, she’s surprisingly quite modern really I keep in close contact with my grandmother and my cousin if only to keep tabs on how my mom and dad are holding up.” She said softly, she loved her family very much, but she had to follow her own heart.

Heather Argeneau, Ce

Aihia could see how deeply Heather cared for her family, a trait that seemed common amongst the officers of this trade. In a way, the crew was a family, their ties deeper than most could imagine. Although, millions of miles from home, sometimes the connections between officers wasn’t enough to fill the gaps meant for those of kin, those who they love. “I see.. and it makes perfect sense.” She felt bad for growing so upset about Heather retaining the information for so long. Albeit, Aihia was not the kind of woman to wear her emotions on her sleeve, so that guilt never crossed hed features. Thinking about Heather’s family, as she finished up the wraps, carrying two plates over to the table, she came to wonder: “When was the last time you got to see them?” She knew many of the officers on Dauntless had not seen their families since before their transfer to her decks, but with the Argeneau’s great age, she couldn’t help but wonder how long it had been since Heather had heard her grandmother laugh.

Captn. Aihia

“Actually I talked to my Grandmother and Cousin just the other day they called me to see how I was doing and thankfully it was a quiet night so I could sit and chat for a while about how everything was going. Thomas and his lifemate Inez is expecting another child. You’d think after what a thousand or so years together they’d have grown bored of each other.” Heather giggled slightly at the thought. She thanked Ael for the wrap that was set before her. “How often do you talk to your family?” Heather asked curiously, though she had the suspicion it wasn’t something that happened often or at all. That actually made her sad really.

Heather Argeneau, CE

“Another? Congratulations to the lucky couple.” She grinned, taking a seat across from Heather. She wondered how people could stay together for a thousand years and never grow bored of the other. If true love did exist in the harshness of their galaxy, Thomas and Inez were the prime examples of what it might be like. “Perhaps eternal love is not such a myth after all,” She mused, humming to herself. Picking up her wrap, she bit into the crisp vegetables. It was odd, a vegetarian Romulan, but Aihia prided herself in being different. Grateful for the food obstructing her voice, she took a moment to respond. “Oh.. uh. Quite a while, I’m not sure how long.” She shrugged, although not directly obvious to anyone who wasn’t observant, Ael was lying. “I did hear from my ex a few days ago; she’s doing mighty fine– even got a new puppy and a girlfriend, but I think she prefers the puppy.” She remarked, to brighten the mood. It was true though, and Ael held no ill manner for Natyra.

Oh Heather was Observant, she also knew when to call bullshit and when not to. However, she also had the advantage of being able to read the other woman’s mind, though she did choose not to. “Well if true love is out there I haven’t found it yet and I think I might prefer the puppy too.” Heather grinned before taking a bite of her own wrap. “This is good.” She said around the mouthful and behind her hand.

Heather Argeneau, Ce

“You say that as if you have found someone,” Aihia observed, quirking a frivolous eyebrow in curiosity. “Regardless, I would too. Dogs are incredible creatures, it is no wonder they’re man’s best friend.” Shrugging, she picked up the wrap, sinking her teeth into it. She enjoyed the crispness of its texture, but it still didn’t compare to real, organic food. Nodding in appreciation, modesty refusing her the chance to respond, she smiled. “It doesn’t compare to real food though. Some days an aeroponics bay seems far more valuable than enhancing our phaser array.”

Heather smiled softly, “No, I can read the minds of just about everyone here. and if I can read their minds, then I can alter their thought or memories to make it as if they’ve never met me. that means they cannot be my lifemate. My grandmother was put through that. The man she thought she loved could manipulate her. use her as a puppet if he so chose to do so which means they were not true lifemates. But because she looked like his late wife he turned her regardless and in the end, they came to hate each other because he cold read her disgust and hatred for him and well she knew what he was doing to her. She was grateful to him for giving her children she loved, but I would never do that to another individual, take their free will away it’s the worst possible thing I could do to someone.” Heather explained sadly. She sighed, for one of her kind to know they’ve found their perfect mate was to not be able to even get into their mind. It was a very rare individual that you couldn’t read even a little. There have been individuals with strong minds making it difficult to alter their memories, but you could still get into their mind to read it. “Dogs are very loyal. My grandmother always kept one close at hand and she named it Julius. Of course, it wasn’t until later in her 700 years that she learned she did this because it was the only clue to the fact that she had at one point met her true lifemate a man from Italy named Julius, but that is a story for another time.” She smiled taking another bite out of her wrap and savoring the flavors.
