I am Captain Endust of the USS Einstien a classified science vessel who answers to the RTF task force, if you find this log then it is most likely that I am no longer breathing. Our ship had been dispatched to take control of an artifact from a Ferengi trading merchant and when negotiations failed we stole the device but were caught in our escape. We thought we had contained the artifact. We noticed the artifact was emitting a sleep suppressive sound wave which was affecting the crew, our scientist disabled this particular component but when we interacted with the box it released whatever was being held inside. We later found out the box was a prison for a type currie Abbell entity which we nicknamed ‘Sandman’.

The Immediate science team that was working on the box was placed in a coma by means we could not tell and the remainder of the crew began seeing apparitions or shadows and it slowly drove them mad. I too have been affected and all attempts to contain the being have failed. We believe sandman is somehow manipulating a dreamscape environment our original science team had been forced into and only there could he be defeated but we had run out of time. I am going to try and face sandman by inducing myself into a deep sleep where I can manipulate the dream if this fails, you must destroy the ship. I hope this information falls into the rights hands and one last thing, don’t fall asleep, it’ll be your last. Gods speed.

Lt. Synthi-er, CNS/RTF

“ Doctor any speculation as to this ‘sleep suppression’ sound?’ This would be really helpful if we could replicate it.” Bog was sketching ideas for a sonic weapon and defense. Sound canceling hearing protection was an idea but with out the sleep suppressing sound he didn’t think it would work well.

Bog

The Doctor watched the new team come in and was preparing the inoculation for them until she heard the message from the Captain of the Einstien. Listening patiently to everyone’s input, the doctor glowers at Bog, “I’m a doctor, not an audio engineer. If you want noise-canceling headphones that would be your area of expertise Mister Bog. I can, however, provide you with something that will keep you awake, though I must warn you that it is highly dangerous and doesn’t come without extreme risks.” The doctor strode over to a wall panel that she removed to put a safe behind. The safe, locked by a special isoliner chip and fifteen digit passcode as well as a DNA scan, housed a hypospray and several different chemical charges. “Now, this is compound I (eye), it will keep you at the peak state of alert and awake for 8 hours. After 6, you run the risk of developing a permanent case of insomnia. After 12 hours, your body will exhaust and will feel like you’ve been awake for 48. At 28 hours, the continuous cerebral activity will melt your brain. Now, I do have a countermeasure, it is in a safe located under the floor panel that the Counselor is standing on. That safe belongs to Ensign Korvoh to ensure we follow a two-person control method when it comes to my more dangerous substances.” The doctor loads the hypospray in preparation. “If you take this, you do so at your own risk with the hope that you will bring Korvoh back ALIVE. If you agree, say so now and I’ll have my team prepare the catalyst and meet you in the shuttle bay. If you don’t agree, I will put it away and we’ll do something more…mundane.”

  • Doctor Fey Kastil

Casela had already let the doctor reinforce her broken ribs with a metal coating, why not this? And then she told her Korvoh wasn’t on board. “Doctor, we already know one member of the away team is dead. We’ve lost contact and at this point we have no idea if anyone is still alive or not. We can hope, but we don’t know. Unless you have a back up for getting into Korvoh’s safe, I’ll have to pass for something you do have the antidote for.”

“ As amazing an engineer I may be, I am not an audiologist not a neurologist. But as you are obviously incapable of advising me as to what frequency and modulation of sound might render some one resistant to sleep I will settle for your medication.” The twinkle in his eyes betrayed his pleasure at the Doctors verbal abuse. “Shall we proceed?”

Bog the unwise…

“In general: Binaural beats in the delta, 1 to 4 Hz, range have been associated with deep sleep and relaxation. Binaural beats in the theta, 4 to 8 Hz, range are linked to REM sleep, reduced anxiety, relaxation, as well as meditative and creative states. So 1 to 8 hz Mr. Bog would be where we need to block the sound, hopefully.” When a nurse looked at her, Casela shrugged, “Sometimes the best treatment for a patient is sleep. It helps to know these things.”

Lt. Synthi-er, CNS

Standing there, Bog’s eyes narrowed as he scratched his beard. “I am not privy to any intelligence that actually suggests that the entity actually uses sound, but that the containment apparatus used sound as a defensive or offensive measure. If the 1-8 HZ range induce or reinforce sleep, what I need to know is what range disrupts sleep the most?”

Casela turned slowly to Bog, “You are correct Mr. Bog, however since Sandman is putting them to sleep it is an educated guess to say that he is doing something similar to what his prison did. Who’s to say that he manipulated his prison to put them to sleep. That the original prison didn’t work as well as his captors hoped. We must start hypothesizing somewhere. And we start with what we know, he puts his victims to sleep and that delta and theta waves put humanoids to sleep. That is what we know. So a range that disrupts sleep? Noises, like an alarm with frequencies above 2 KHz are known to keep people awake.” Casela looked at the doctor, because that was the limit of her own knowledge.

It always amazed him how other wise intelligent people would see or hear what they expected as opposed to what was actually heard or seen. intellectually he understood the mechanism in the wet ware that created the issue but he didn’t feel it in his heart.

Looking from the Counselor to the Doctor, “Any suggestions, Lady’s?”

Bog the dumbfounded

The Doctor took the charge out of the hypospray and put it back into the safe. If it was not a unanimous vote for the stims use then she wouldn’t use it, Casela’s analysis is correct that Doctor Korvoh may be the one that has died, no point in risking the team over it. “We need the sine wave generated by the anomaly to produce the anti-sine wave. It’s how we perform shock lithotripsies to avoid damaging internal organs because once you get close to 7 hertz with sound, you start damaging organs. At 19 you shred them, which is why I would never recommend using sound waves unless you know the exact sine wave. This is the work of a physicist and an electrical engineer, I’m a chemist and a surgeon, we need to ask GLaDOS because there isn’t anything medically ‘safe’ I can do for you. I can give you the usual stimulant, but that won’t have much effect against a soundwave that is forcing you to sleep. I can give you the inoculation that blocks the receptors in your brain that cause hallucinations and dreams, the risks there are significantly more manageable and shouldn’t be affected by sound, but again, it won’t keep you awake but it will leave you out of whatever that thing is doing. If you can’t dream, how is it supposed to affect you?”

  • Doctor Fey Kastil

Bog continued to scratch his beard. “So I need a consultant who can help me with the frequency once we identify it.” Turning to the counselor, “Can Fido take the readings and perhaps transmit the needed frequency?”

Bog

Casela nodded, “Yes Fenrir can do that.”

Lt. Synthi-er, CNS

“ Correct me if I am wrong, but the Captains log said that they disabled the sonic portion of the containment unit, so I would propose that the unit was effective utile the Einstein’s science team disabled it.” Bog looked at the counselor “ now I am aware of area denial weapons that operate in either the sub 10 and excess of 20 HZ rang, and if memory serves 120 decimal plus power range. What I need to know is what’s going to be the least risk to health and most discomfort to the widest range of humanoids.”

“I heard the same thing. But that does’t mean that there wasn’t something wrong with it before the science team turned it off. Of course I have never been with RTF before this, but I wouldn’t want the prison to send people to sleep on the outside of it, I would want it to put what was inside of it asleep. Just a point of view, Bog. But we can speculate all day and never know more.” Casela shrugs. “If we can Fenrir inside first he might be able to find it and send back the frequency for us first.” She looks around for an empty computer terminal. She steps over pulls out an isochip from the bag she carrying and downloads the specs of the Einstein onto it. She’ll upload it to Fenrir once the team meets him in the shuttle bay.

Looking around to the assembled. “Ideally I would like to know the exact frequency and decimal used to contain the entity, but baring that one that will keep me awake.”

Bog the eves dropper.

GLaDOS stepped into sickbay, looking at those collected, then turned to Kastil. “I have been briefed on the situation. I apologize for my lateness. If it is sleep that we wish to avoid, I would place myself at the forefront of those assigned to go into the fray. As a Borg, I do not rest my mind in the manner usual to most humanoids, going into a mostly-conscious rest state which I can consciously release myself from. In other words - I do not sleep. I expect that might be a useful skill.”

GLaDOS, CSO

“You make a very good point GLaDOS. I think it would be careless of us to ignore that obvious advantages you have.” Casela was all for that idea. =^=Lt. Synthi-er to Cpt. Cobb. Permission for Lt. Cmdr. GLaDOS to accompany the away team? She pointed out to us that because of her Borg implants, she doesn’t sleep like the rest of us. It’s possible, Sandman may have no effect on her.=^=
Lt. Synthi-er, CNS/RTF

Bog watched the exborg with interest. Planning wasn’t exactly the Tellarite’s strong suit, then again neither was he much of a team player. Lead, fallow or get the hell of his way was much more his nature.

Bog.

Doctor Kastil clapped once to show more than usual excitement. “Perfect! Let me get you some mobile lab equipment.” The doctor turned and busied herself with setting up a small cart that would allow GLaDOS to mix chemicals while on the go. She won’t be able to make as much as she could with a full lab but she’ll be able to do something along the way. “I’ve included a formula book with the mobile lab so you can have a base of chemical treatments to use along the way just in case. The hyposprays are pre-loaded with stimulants to help keep the team awake, but I fear it will do nothing against whatever is causing things to fall asleep. The team on the ship already has been inoculated against dreams and hallucinations. I don’t know for sure if it worked mostly because I don’t understand enough about what is happening. Also, there is a tricorder that is coded to send the feed to my office so I can direct and advise on what chemicals or medications to use to better combat the issue.”

  • Doctor Fey Kastil

Cobb snorted dryly. As if his word carried any weight where the Leviathan’s CSO was concerned. Still, formality was sometimes all that remained.
=^=Permission granted=^= he replied, then added, =^=Let us hope she is right.=^=

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

GLaDOS nodded to Fey. “I am not medically trained, so I will depend on your ability to tell me what to do if the other crewmembers are rendered unconscious by the effects,” she said, reaching over to place her natural hand on the CMO’s shoulder and give a gentle squeeze.

GLaDOS, CSO

Doctor Fey gently pats GLaDOS’s hand and nods at the former Borg, then turned her attention to Bog. “Don’t worry, if these fools decide it’s necessary to take a nap on the job you can just assimilate them and cure them of the problem.” The Doctor laughs a little before turning to face Casela, “Because I want to prepare for all possibilities, is your robopup able to pilot a shuttle in the event something we don’t account for is able to render GLaDOS asleep? What thigs are able to render you unconscious even with the Borg Implants that we should prepare for just in case?”
