Gently the girl shook her head. “You need to see people for who they really are by yourself. Not what others see them as.” She said as if she were quoting someone saying something profound. She watched Cobb again a moment. “I like your accent…” she said with the same smile.

Gen

“Is that right?” Cobb murmured, sitting back as much as was possible on the tiny chair. “Well, I see you. I see that you’re alone and you’re afraid and I want to help you, Gen. But I…don’t know how.”

The girl shrugged and gave Cobb a look as if she herself didn’t know what to make of the situation either.

Another glance at Casela, this one laden with concern and the desperation of one who was drowning.

“And my accent is from a place called Cape Cod. Nantucket to be precise. Do you know where that is, Gen?”

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

”earth?” she asked

Casela looked at Gen. “I know the person who taught you that was very important to you, Gen. But it would really mean a lot to me and Cpt Cobb if you would tell us. We want to make sure not only that you ARE safe but you feel safe as we. So if someone is bothering you or makes you worry, we need to know. I am glad you want us to make our own choices, but it’s okay for you to tell us yours as well.” She reached out and gave Gen a one armed side hug to encourage her to speak openly with Cobb.

Gen sighed and shook her head. ”People get scared sometimes…of the things they don’t know, or the things they have done…or are planning to do…or might do.” she looked directly at Cobb then. ”paranoia…hurt…revenge.” she started at him a few moments then looked away, back to her puzzle. ”Not everyones good all the time.”

“Nobody is good all the time,” Cobb whispered, unsure whether that formed an acknowledgement or a confession. His gaze retreating to his knees, the captain hugged at his own elbows, that familiar, glacial surge of shame coursing through his veins. Not even a spark in her mother’s eye on the eve of Cobb’s greatest transgressions, yet somehow he could not shake the feeling that the window to his scorched soul had been opened and she was currently peering inside.

“But most people on this ship try to be good, Gen?” he suggested, desperate for a name or a target to deflect her accusations towards anyone other than himself.

”Most people.” Gen agreed. She twisted the puzzle into it’s final image and offered it to Cobb.

”and there’s the abomination…” she whispered quietly.

Gen

The word like a punch to the throat, wide eyes met those of the Counselor, his expression screaming mutely for a single, reassuring word.

Turning back to Gen, Zachariah failed to dampen his own fear, as, with voice trembling slightly, he asked, “Abomination? Do you mean…the thing in containment? Dave?”

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

The girl watched him, a spark of fear in her eyes, then she nodded grimly.

Gen

“There’s no need to be afraid, Gen,” Cobb reassured her. Or was it himself he attempted to convince? “Dave is…contained. And it’s the job of every man and woman on this ship to ensure he stays that way. Right, Lieutenant?” he turned to Synthi-er again, hoping that she might deliver the same information with a measure more conviction.

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

“Cpt. Cobb is right. Dave is contained and the people in charge of keeping him there are very good at what they do. And you don’t have to go anywhere near him.” Casela reached an arm out and put it around Gen giving her a hug. Hoping to ease the fear and tension out of her some. The show of affection so unlike her, but she wouldn’t know if it shocked Cobb or not as all her attention was on Gen at the moment. Then she looked up a the captain, her look acknowledging what she had told him in his officer earlier. She was far too close to the situation now.

Gen gave a small sigh. As if she were letting loose the air she had been holding. She allowed the hug but didn’t hug back, like she wasn’t sure what to do, so instead she looked at Cobb.

”You’re afraid.” she said. ”You have to not be afraid. Because they will keep coming…your ship. That’s what you’re going to do and it’s too late now…so you can’t be afraid. Ad you can’t let the doubt and dark inside be in control otherwise you’ll attract more like it…”

She frowned as if a thought had just occurred to her and looked at Casela, as if she hadn’t just acted like creepy prophecy girl. ”Why did you call it Dave…”
