Kestiana sighed as she made her way into her office for the first time since getting on the station. She just needed a breather and the XO’s office seemed to be the best place to do it for some reason. She replicated a glass of Iced vanilla latte and settled in the seat behind her desk. What few personal items she had sat at her feet in a box. Taking a drink from the glass she reached down for a picture of herself and her twin sister Alicia and their parents. It was one of the few days that they had switched to look like the other twin and confuse their parents. Smiling fondly at the picture she set it on the desk where she would see it often.

She moved to hang up a few awards and diplomas that lead to her position as Executive officer of the Shipyard Serenity, standing back with her hands on her hips she looked at them to make sure they were straight. Before turning back to the box for the last item which was a painting that she had worked on of a sun setting over the Lake Cataria in betazed that she had painted herself. Leaning back against the desk to admire the painting and drink her iced latte.

Sahal, XO

Ferl’lak mumbled that he had to acquaint himself with new leadership. The former XO had been a hard challenge to make friends with. But he did make friends with her. She still wouldn’t put up with his private ventures but she didn’t stop him either. He put on one of his favored suits and picked up a 100-year-old bottle of Betazed wine he had been saving from his private collection and walked to her office hoping she was in. He was fortunate that he was a Ferengi because Betazed mind powers don’t work on his species. He smiled to himself as he rang the chime.

Ferl’lak

Kestiana looked up as the chime went off on her office, someone knew she was settling in already that was interesting. She’d had a note left behind by the last XO on the Ferengi in charge of civilian matters. Though she had tossed it because it was mostly negative, warning her about his pension for private ventures. So she wondered if this was the Ferengi in question since she could sense someone on the other side, but nothing other than the fact that he was there. “Come.” She called to let whoever was on the other side know she was in fact in her office.

Kestiana Sahal, XO

Ferl’lak smiled showing off his razor sharp teeth and walked in. Commander Sahal. My name is Ferl’lak. ” He said while he put his hand out for her to shake.

“I just wanted to come on by and not only introduce myself as I am the Head of Civilian Affairs and to give you a bottle of wine not only from your homeworld but I hope from your region. It is very old but it has been well kept and it will taste divine. And since I’m a Ferengi, I did leave the cork and everything intact so that you will know and see that it has not been tampered with. ” He smiled again.

Ferl’lak

Kestiana Sahal smiled accepting the handshake with a firm grip, “It is a pleasure to meet you Mr. Ferl’lak, and this is an absolute treasure.” She said softly knowing she would probably open it only on a special occasion. “Thank you.” She said softly, “So what can I do for you today Mr. Ferl’lak?” She asked curiously.

Kestiana Sahal, XO

He noted the grip of the shake and liked a person that shook like that. “Well, I am here to just say hello, introduce myself since we will be working together on a lot of things and to be friendly and offer any help I can provide. Fr..frr..free of charge of course.” He chided himself for not being able to say free without messing up. Why wad that word so hard to say.

Ferl’lak

Kestiana smiled, she was half Betazoid and the Betazeds have had some dealing with the Ferengi’s, “I imagine that word is quite hard for you to say, I appreciate the offer though and will definitely take you up on that. However, I suspect that your hear for just a little more than to say hi and offer you’re, help free of charge, is there something I can do for you?” She asked softly offering him a seat. “Would you like a drink?” She asked as well.

Kestiana Sahal, XO

He smiled showing his razor sharp teeth and dry wringed his hands. “Thank you. I’ll take a seat and a rum and coke, neat.” He jumped up into one of the chairs. “It is a very difficult word for me to say, just like your Earth contractions. That is why I do not use them. “

He took a breath and continued. “As for me coming here, I assume it is an extremely hard idea for others, especially those that know Ferengi customs, to expect some ulterior motives. You could think that I came here bringing gifts and kind words to not only say hello but to size you up personally and to truly see what kind of person you are for myself. Couple that with what the outgoing XO told you about me and what you already know if Ferengi and in reference to Rule 8: Small print leads to large risk and Rule 38: Free advertising is cheap, but there is one more that is important and that is Rule 33: It never hurts to suck up to the boss. So despite what you have heard, read or been told about me or my race, I am different from them and just wanted to make myself known to you since we will be working together. Do you have any other questions or rumors that I can squash for you?”

Ferl’lak

Kestiana ordered two rum and cokes for herself and Mr. Ferl’lak, “I must apologize to you, Mr. Ferl’lak, You are right, usually I pride myself on making my own opinions of a person and not listen to rumor or what my race has learned from dealing with Ferengi’s,” Kestiana said as she held one out to him and moved to lean against the edge of her desk facing him. She took a drink of her own rum and coke as she did so. “Being new as I am, I was hoping you’d catch me up on the civilian operations and how they are coming along?” She asked softly.

Kestiana Sahal, XO

Ferl’lak took the drink and took a sip as he listened to her. It was good. “Well no need to apologize Commander. I am what Earth people call shady as hell. I just do things differently is all.”

He took another sip. “As for as civilian operations the station could use more Engineers but the shipyard rebuilding is coming along nicely. We have plenty of bars but one main one called Atlantis. It is a great place. But I have heard Hew-Mons say they would like more amenities like more places for laundry, more recreation places to play pool, darts and the like and something about throwing metal shoes at a ring but it looks like a pole sticking out of the floor to me rather than a ring....oh and an actual pool with more places for children parks and playgrounds as well.” He sipped his rum and coke again.

Ferl’lak

Kestiana listened as she sampled her own drink, “Hmm that does sound like things we’ll need on the Civilian side,” She said as she moved her drink in a circular motion to mix the ice around lightly, “Is this something I can leave in your capable hands? or shall I need to talk with the engineers about building a few of these amenities?” Kestiana asked knowing that some people could be difficult to deal with and getting a pool on the station may not be easy to get commissioned.

Kestiana Sahal, XO

Ferl’lak smiled so broadly that his face hurt. “Oh Commander. It will not be a problem for ol’ Ferl’lak. I will take care of all these things as long as I can count on your support and backing? Leave it to me. I have ideas and plans already made. Do you have any other ideas or questions for me?” He laughed his normal laugh but to someone who doesn’t know him, the laugh would sound sinister.

Ferl’lak

Kestiana smiled softly, “When it comes to our crew Mr. Ferl’lak I believe I will trust the handling of Civilian affairs in you’re capable hands,” Kestiana said softly, otherwise, she had no further questions for the Ferengi. She just hoped her trust wasn’t abused.
