Into post--2 years ealier

David stood solemnly to one side of the hangar bay as he listened to the service for his friend Cael. He’d been his partner, and it was a freak accident, but that did keep David from feeling guilty. What if he’d been there, been able to see the signs of overload from the panel, been able to pull him away, he could still be here. David knew Cael would want to be with him on the Trenton project, the Trill was a big proponent of the ship, and now he was dead because of a freak accident.

“How you feeling?” A woman–David remembered her name was Alia–asked him. “I…don’t know. I shouldn’t have dedicated so much time to Trenton. Had I dedicated less time I could’ve gone with him to test the panels, I could’ve seen the overload, pulled him back, or activated a forcefield or something.”

Alia smacked his arm. “Earth to Mills, no you couldn’t. The time between overload and explosion was less than a second. Even we don’t have a forcefield that can go up that fast, and instead of losing one of our best operatives we would’ve lost two–as well as all the work on the Trenton would’ve gone to waste.” Alia knew how much this project meant to both men–but to David especially.

He’d never had a chance to properly grieve his father’s death and thus, when he began the work on the Trenton, he threw himself into it as a way to cope. So having his best friend die because of doing it would eat away at him for years to come. “If you need to talk, you know where to find me.”
